My head is pounding with pain.

I just got back from a week in hell.

I'm unshaved.

I ran out of deodorant.

I can almost understand Ginsberg's poems.

I haven't been playing any games.

I haven't even really touched my guitar.

All I hear is Coltrane and Davis and Ginsberg and Dylan.

There's this song. It's called Darn that Dream. It's on Birth of the Cool, by Miles Davis.

It made me write my first complete poem that wasn't just two verses. It's not completely polished yet, but I probably still need more vocabulary to get where I want to be.

Here it is, as I wrote it on Sunday. Enjoy.

Dream be Damned

For taking advantage

Of my semi-catatonic state

Refusing to bandage

My heart awake

-

For platters of dessert

Swallowed by my eyes blind

My mind suddenly alert

Sweets left behind

-

Oh dream be damned

That love be dreamed

Oh dream be damned

What dream can love?

-

For your sudden appearance

In the ghostly spotlight of my mind

For seducing me with a glance

And treating me so kind

-

For kisses sweet and true

That feel so true

That start with you

And end with you

-

For ending it so soon!

For holding my heart hostage!

And for setting it loose into darkness!

-

For having little to do with reality…

For robbing me blind…

For everything and for nothing…

-

Oh dream be damned

That love be dreamed

Oh dream be damned

What dream can love?

---

Also here's a quick one I wrote in math cIass at the start of the school year.

In cIass

When things seem wrong

When lies are missed

Your logic is so strong

But your brain is in the mist

-

Mistakes are left unchecked

Confusion is the norm

Give me time to reflect

To return to form

---

Well, I hope I didn't freak anyone out.

Have a good week folks.

I'm going to see Arlo Guthrie on Thursday.

Woody Guthrie's son.

Yeah, you heard me right.

Woody

Guthrie

Peace

Man, what the heck happened? Midterms?

Not bad poetry, makes it sound like you had a very rough week. I'm assuming either spurned by a desired person or mugged by a cake. A very delicious cake.

Your condition is somehow similar with mine these days. I haven't entirely got back from the hell of the last week, but I'm a little optimistic, just a little. I'm unshaven too, but that's how I usually am during the last 10 years. (..no, I don't mean that I haven't used a razor for 10 years ) I haven't played any games, except for yesterday. My deodarant isn't out yet, but I forgot to put it on today.
I read your poems, very good try, I can't say much, because I'm no expert, neither did I understand a lot of things, because my English don't help me much. My hunch is, that there is a "woman case" behind all these. He, he...

Yeah, midterms, 3 weeks of hell actually, not one. I made a typo at the start of the blog.

Three Weeks.

@Rheinmetal
and
@Samson089

The poem is not about a woman in particular. The poem is about a sentiment. The sentiment you get from a dream that betrays you. The dream offers cake and sweets, or a woman, and it takes it all away when you wake up. Vivid dreams can break your heart too! The poem is really just about that sentiment.
The song "darn that dream" just reminded me of that sentiment and made me write the poem.

sounds like the equivelant of the SAT or somethin'. Either that or you went on a deep sea fishing trip in the northern hemisphere. Now THAT is hell. I couldn't count the amount of times that I threw up. lol

ahh! poems.. i'm a little too inexperienced to comment on poetic structure or anything like that.. it's something so personal. but it's nice to see you write it - i think the internet is good for getting self-expression out.

whenever i write poems they turn out awful... it's usually when i'm in love or something. i like haikus, and i like poetic language, but poems themselves i very rarely do. problem is, i don't read them either! so i'm really too ignorant on this.

@just_nonplussed

Ah, but you must read some poetry! It is fantastic.

Go look up "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg. It's not a short poem, by any means though. It took me awhile to finally muster up the concentration to read through every part of the poem and its footnote. I finally got it though. That whole volume is great. "Howl and other Poems", you can find it for cheap easily.

I enjoy Poe as well as Thomas Hood, a contemporary of his. Look up "Bridge of sighs." Anyway, I just started really getting into it and I want to see what I'm capable of.

The internet is a nice way of anonymously seeing what people think of your writing etc. But I wonder...If I show this poem to someone I know personally will they freak out or think I'm a freak or something?

I actually sent a poem to a girl I was in love with once and It did not go well...

This time the poem is not about anyone in particular. It's just about that sentiment.

Ooof, I already have enough homework to worry about !

Thanks for reading.
