I started 1984 and after 5 pages I decided I was done. Yeah Already too wordy and just not very fun. When I was reading Harry Potter I never wanted to put it down, too bad its not like that for this book. I am afraid that its gonna take forever to read this book, Something else I am REALLY REALLY afraid of is Throwing-up, or feeling nauseas, I am Emetophobic. What is something you are really afraid of?

What I remember most about 1984 is the guy's liaison with the Junior Anti-Sex League hottie. As with everything else, the name of the group means the opposite of what it actually ends up being.
Essentially, this book explores a dystopic world in which the government spies on everyone through their televisions. There's a constant war going on to keep people from really thinking very hard about anything except for sports, about which everyone is obsessed.
Part of what might be interesting to you is the fact that the guy wrote this in 1948. It's kind of amazing the things that he foresaw happening.
Don't get hung up on the title -- especially now that "1984" is more than 20 years in our rearview. When it was written, 1984 was nearly four decades in the future.
It's wordy, and it makes up its own language, so that's never easy. Think of NewSpeak as TXTSPK. And feel completely free to skim. You'll get the gist.
It's worth getting.

What I find amazing is no one has even mentioned the movie. I've never seen the movie (although I did read the book) but I'm thinking it must have not been well made if no one even remembers there was a movie made from the book.
Orwell is deep. I got more from Animal Farm than 1984, but in general, he is not my type of read. I don't recall if I had to read it for school or I chose to read it because it was in the English section of the Danish library where I was an exchange student hungry for ANYTHING written in English.
In hindsight, I suppose it was rather visionary about how we'd be living today. Although not at the extremes portrayed in the book, I still feel Big Brother's presence.
