GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con
Saturday, Aug 2, 2008

I just got this game yesterday, for free, with my $60 store credit that was left, and its been great so far. The story mode in this game is a rather disappointing replacement for the game's previously extremely addicting missions mode, but at least it more than makes up for that godawful strategy map type mode from Soul Calibur III, IMO. The character creation feature also works out much better in this game, than it did in SC3, with much more freedom to make the character look exactly the way you want. I myself have made a completely bad-ass looking character, named Lord Raizen, and have made 4 versions of him, each in a wielding a different weapon, and using different character's fighting styles.

The Star Wars characters are a nice addition, but both of them can be a bit too cheap, in their own ways (see my post on talonmalon333's Resident Evil 2 blog, for a more detailed explanation of that).

Anyways, the game is really fun, and the online mode is extremely addicting. In fact, I haven't even bothered to unlock too many characters and weapons right now, because I have been having too much fun playing against human opponents, who are much more skilled than the AI of this game, even on the highest difficulty setting. I needed to practice, since I hadn't played and SC game in over a year, and since I had forgot a lot of the best moves for my favorite characters. However, after warming up last night, I was doing pretty good today. I had a total of 8 wins, and 4 losses, which means that I'm still not quite as good as I used to be, but I'm pleased with these results. What's kind of funny though, is that I got 5 wins in a row, meaning that I got more than half of those 8 wins consecutively. For a while, I actually thought that I had become a pro again, but then I got some sense knocked back into me .

Anyways, there are ton of things about this game that I have not yet covered, but all I can say is that this is a Soul Calibur game, and if anyone here is a fan of the series, or of fighting games in general, than it is definitely worth purchasing .

Aside from Soul Calibur, I would just like to mention that the new HP trailer has been released. As some of you may know, I am actually a fan of the novels. I'm not really too big on the movies, but for the most part, they have been pretty good, and mostly faithful to the book series. Anyways, I haven't been really excited for a Harry Potter movie since the 1st one, but the trailer for this one was just great. It featured one of my favorite parts from the 6th book, which it is based off of, and the 6th book was my 2nd favorite in the series. Honestly, I can't see how so many people to criticize it. Most of its criticism was just nit-picking, and if you ask me, the fact that a lot of this book explored the past of the main villain, rather than focus on Harry's story, made things a bit more interesting, since, for once, things weren't centered around Harry and his friends, like they usually are. It just had a unique feel to it that the other books didn't have, and if their was one movie adaption of any one of the HP books that I would really want to see done well, it would be this one. Of course, this one isn't my favorite in the series, and my favorite HP book has already been adapted into a movie, one which wasn't as great as I had hoped for it to be, but which was still done relatively well, overall, IMO.

Which one of the Star Wars characters in Soul Calibur IV was your favorite even though you said they are both cheap? I'm also a pretty big Harry Potter fan as well since I have already finish all seven books not too long ago. I have high expectations on the 6th movie since it is my second favorite book also. My favorite book would have to be the Deathly Hallows and my third favorite was the Goblet of Fire.

I have the XBOX360 version of Soul Calibur IV, so the exclusive Star Wars character which I am referring to is Yoda. And the other character is The Apprentice, from the upcoming Star Wars game, who is featured in both the XBOX360 and PS3 versions of the game.

My favorite Harry Potter book was The Goblet of Fire, and my 3rd favorite was The Deathly Hallows .

Eh, the Harry Potter books are all right. But the movies just vary too much in quality. The first and second movies were too long and just felt bland. The fourth and fifth were kind of short and half of the characters like Snape, Ginny, or the Dursleys didn't get any character development. They didn't seem to even have that many lines. But, I liked the third movie.

(I dont know much of Soul Caliber, so I won't comment on it)

For Harry Potter, I'd say the 6th one is my favorite. The trailer looked pretty cool, along with the Dumbledore and the flames and everything. Anyways, can't wait to see the movie adaption. I didn't think the 5th movie was made into its best capabilities though.

Heh, I remember my friends talking about the whole Yoda and Vader being in the upcoming Soul Calibur game way back when. I'm not that big of a gamer, so I just kinda listened in semi-interest .

Yep, it wasn't until I saw the announcement on comcast's site earlier this week that I knew about the HP trailer and immediately went to YouTube. The fourth book was my favorite, so in terms of HP movies I wanted to check out, that's already been dealt with (awesomely, BTW). Though, of course, since I'm a HP fan, I've gotta check out the others. Although I had the book spoiled for me, I agree that book six ranks way up there (I don't really bother putting 'em in order ). Seeing Dumbledore in the trailer just look behind him and set stuff on fire like it was nothing was priceless.

Do you remember if it was the sixth or seventh movie that they plan on splitting into two movies? I haven't exactly been keeping up to date on any news...

Character creation is awesome. I made a few anime characters. Online- Watch out for cheaters who use the same move over and over...and the dude with the Bo Staff...they can poke you to death when you fall down...(extremely cheap.)

petewrigley: Yeah, the 4th book was my favorite as well .

Wait, what is this I hear about 1 of the books being split up into 2 movies ? This is definitely news to me .

Checking up Wikipedia, it looks like it'll be the final book that'll be split into two films. I guess it's understandable, considering that the trio spends so much time hunting down those darn Horcruxes...

I love the critical finish feature in the game.

I wanna get Soul Calibur 4 but I'm actually concerned about the 360 controls. Have you had any real problems with controls? ^_^
Posted Aug 4, 2008 2:01 pm PT
qtwanderer: I love how they are nearly impossible to pull off .

Master_M2K: Well, its been a bit tougher for me to pull of guard-breaks and counters, but that may just be because I have lost a lot of my touch with the game, since its been a while since I've last played an SC game. Other than that, I have had no problems with the controls. They are very smooth, and very responsive.
Posted Aug 4, 2008 2:18 pm PT
I have been a fan of SC ever since it was a PS1 game called Soul Blade. I hope SC4 is as good as everyone says.

"I'm still not quite as good as I used to be,"
Hah! I'll bet you were all talk .
Posted Aug 4, 2008 8:23 pm PT
Sure..
Posted Aug 4, 2008 11:23 pm PT
Evolution_666: Soul Edge (as some call it) was OK, but I personally didn't become a fan of the series until Soul Calibur .

talonmalon333: Yeah, and I'm sure you actually have skills at this game . [/sarcasm]

Well, one thing I know for sure is that I would wipe the floor with you in any SC game.Too bad you don't have an X360, because then I could kick your ass online .

qtwanderer: Alright, what system do you have this game for. If you have it on the X360, then I challenge you to a match online, and I guarentee that you will never be able to pull a critical finisher off on me, because its nearly impossible (also, because I won't even give you the chance to ). Out of all of the matches that I have either played or watched online, nobody has been able to perform a finisher, yet.

the traliers for SCIV look awesome
Posted Aug 5, 2008 8:49 am PT
I don't even own an XBox 360 or Soul Calibur 4, but I bet I could bet you, in either version .

LOL

Sorry, but even in a virtual world, with virtual characters, you still only rank on the lower spirit world scale, where S classes believe that they are powerful, but cannot even come close to the rank of an E class demon on the superior scale, which powerful beings such as myself are ranked on .
Posted Aug 5, 2008 11:52 am PT
If only it was mine or if my friend had the internet, I would take on that challenge in an instant...out of curiousity though, who would you choose to fight with?
Posted Aug 5, 2008 1:04 pm PT
My favorite characters are Mitsurugi, Nightmare, and Cervantes. For online matches, I usually use Cervantes.
Posted Aug 5, 2008 2:36 pm PT
...I use mainly Kilick or Raphael..rare occasions even Yoda. I feel as if I was slapped with a white glove in the face and challenged, I will face you in due time
Posted Aug 5, 2008 3:21 pm PT
I'll be awaiting that challenge with blades of fury .
Posted Aug 6, 2008 5:20 am PT
Hah, you would use that big and clumsy Nightmare and swing your sword mindlessly, and I would bring out Seong Mi-na and beat you down in mere seconds.
talonmalon333: S+ (Superior Scale)
ensatsu-ken: E-
Even on your superior scale I am at the top.
Posted Aug 6, 2008 9:33 am PT
Seong Me-na is for n00bz who aren't good enough to pull off even the simplest of combos . It takes an expert to be able to efficiently use a character like Nightmare, and realize his awesome potential.

Wow, what a genius comeback . [/sarcasm]

Face it, even if my scale had an F class on it, you wouldn't even be able to rank at that level, lol .
Posted Aug 6, 2008 9:54 am PT
Nightmare is just for the new players who just want to use a big, mindless monster . It's quite affective for the newbies/ensatu-ken's to swing a giant sword without thinking .

Thank you !
Posted Aug 6, 2008 2:57 pm PT
talonmalon333: Man, what a newbie. You obviously don't know squat about Soul Calibur . And you call yourself a fan of the series ?

Seriously, if you can't even handle a mere fighting game like Soul Calibur, I can only imagine how badly you would get your ass kicked in hardcore games like Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden, lol .
Posted Aug 6, 2008 5:49 pm PT
Mitsurugi: can't even say his name right, and then tells you to remember it.

Cervantes: is cool but was botched up in the third one. They had better made him cool again in the fourth.

Nightmare: ...need I say more ?
Posted Aug 8, 2008 8:19 pm PT
LOL

I didn't even know that you actually waist your time listening to what the characters have to say (especially considering that its the English dub ).

I can pleasantly assure you that they made-up for their screw-up with Cervantes in the 3rd one. He's just as great a character in this one, as he was in SC2, and he's the character that I use the most online.

Nightmare is amazing for people who actually know how to use him. Its the same with Mitsurugi. The reason for why I like both of those characters more than most others, is because they actually take skill to use, whereas most other characters can be used by n00bz. In other words, you can button mash with most other characters (including Cervantes), but you can't get away with button mashing when it comes to Mitsurugi and Nightmare. However, they are extremely powerful characters for those who know how to utilize their specialties.

Actually, realizing that, while Soul Calibur is a game that involves a lot of skill, many people can get away with just button mashing in a match, I'm not so sure that I would rank SC2 in my top 10 anymore. When I think about it, even though it lacks all of those unlockables that makes the SC games so addicting to play on singe-player, Dead Or Alive has a much better combat system, because button mashing rarely works in that game, and the combat also feels much faster and swifter (partly thanks to the much more fluid animations done by Team Ninja).
Posted Aug 8, 2008 8:32 pm PT
Sorry, but I can think of plenty of ways Nightmare can win by button mashing .
Posted Aug 9, 2008 12:43 pm PT
Oh, right, because that's what you do all of the time when you play Soul Calibur. I mean, after all, that's what people who have absolutely no skills do. They experiment with button mashing a lot .

Well, I'll tell you in advance, if you ever get the face me in a match online, then button mashing won't be able to do sh!t for you .
Posted Aug 9, 2008 12:47 pm PT
No, I know plenty of attacks for certain characters. At first I just didn't know how to use Nightmare until I realized he wasn't worth my time . Only people who only care about mindless, brute force would consider him .
Posted Aug 10, 2008 5:21 pm PT
Nice, it took you a whole entire week to come up with that comeback .

Actually, only mindless players who don't know how to play the game, don't see how it takes an expert to use Nightmare. His attacks are mostly to slow for people who like to button mash (namely you), whereas his attacks are deadly, and efficient, for experts such as myself, who know how to get out timings down.

Honestly, seeing as how you can only barely manage to play Soul Calibur, I'd love to see how badly you would get your ass kicked in a game which you doesn't allow for button mashin, like Dead or Alive, or Ninja Gaiden . Hell, I bet you wouldn't even be able to get past the 1st level of NG, and I mean on Ninja Dog mode (the easiest difficulty setting in the game, lol ).
Posted Aug 11, 2008 5:21 am PT
It was only one day .

I never played Ninja Gaiden or Dead or Alive but I could get through both of them right now with no trouble.
Posted Aug 11, 2008 1:08 pm PT
Twenty-four solid hours to come up with a comeback....Wow, now that's amazing .

LOL

Tell that to the thousands of people who keep b!tching about how hard those games are on their normal difficulty settings alone. Of course, for an experiences gamer such as myself, I can handle both of those games on their much harder difficulty settings, because unlike some people (wonder who ), I actually have skill to rely on, and don't just mash buttons. Anyways, you obviously don't know much about games made by Itagaki, because his games are meant for hardcore gamers, only....except for those stupid DOAX spin-off games (but those don't count, because he only made those games as a hobby, and never took them seriously ).
Posted Aug 11, 2008 2:18 pm PT
The amount of time doesn't matter. You already messed up. Muahahaha!

"because his games are meant for hardcore gamers"
I was well aware of that when I made my last post .
Posted Aug 12, 2008 12:52 pm PT
Awwww, isn't that cute? Little talonmalon333 is trying to feel better about himself, even though it takes him days to come up with just 1 lame comeback .

Pshhh, as if you know what hardcore is .
Posted Aug 12, 2008 4:55 pm PT
Say what you like. I didn't make the mistake .
Posted Aug 13, 2008 4:46 pm PT
You made the mistake of calling yourself a gamer, when the correct term for casual gamers, such as yourself, who cannot handle anything remotely difficult, is "n00b" .

Oh, BTW, you might want to check out what a little someone wrote about Death Note on the animation board (in that Death Note and NGE topic) .
