remember the children's parade i wrote about in july? well, it's not the only one in our town and not the most impressive. on friday the annual "bachfischet" took place. it's a parade where children wear self made laterns through the dark streets of the town. it's a very old tradition. hundreds of years ago a nun's convent who had been given refuge in our town rewarded it with a ditch. every year this ditch was empitied and cleaned and when it came back, it was welcomed by the children wearing lanterns.

Yep, I remember that blog. What does bachfishet translate to in English? Looks like a fun festival! We have something similar in a university here, an annual lantern parade in preparation for Christmas. Do you personally know the girl in the 2nd pic?

hey mack, "bachfischet" means something like "fishing in the ditch" or "ditch fishing", guess they caught and ate the fish that stranded when the water was gone. they cleaned the ditch until a few years ago but they put the fish in containers then so they wouldn't die or wouldn't be eaten (i think nowadays they'd be too small to be eaten anyway ... ). i've found this picture in the online newspaper and i don't know the girl but i thought she had a very nice lantern and this time i couldn't find a picture of my godson.

That's a really cool tradition/parade. It's cool that the kids in your town participate in these parades. And very creative.

it really is, emiko. i took part seven times as a child and teenager and i really enjoyed it. it was great that all the artificial lights were put out and only the lights of the laterns shone and all the children were chanting the same, very old songs and verses.

mack: the picture had changed. i originally had posted the one that is there now with the line of lights in the old part of town.

pat: it is, i'm looking forward to it all year long. my sister is a kindergarden teacher and she's taking part every year and my godson is a 2nd grader and he is in the parade as well, as are a lot of the children from my neighbourhood.

thanks for commenting, inger-anne! it really is beautiful. i'm very much of a "night owl" and i enjoy parades in the dark a lot and there are really nice fireworks in the end ...

it really is, gold_ruby. i've got to admit, that i've found it in an online newspaper, i'm not very much of a photographer, i'm afraid ...

Wow, those are great pictures! That looks amazing! Take care, Bea Oh, and by the way, you'll be pleased to know that I am almost caught up with Due South season 1 and 2. I like the original Ray better now but I still prefer CKR Fraser and Dief rock, tho... "Thank you kindly" lol...

i'm happy you've given season 1 and 2 a chance as well, ela. i liked both rays but a lot of people were complaining about ckr (there even is a thread about it in here). i think the interaction of kowalski and fraser is just edgier than the interaction between vecchio and fraser but really interesting as well.

I looked up the thread. That surprises me with the edgier-stuff. My fangirldom aside (lol...), I seriously think that Kowalski ans Fraser are more affectionate with each other. Vecchio is much more of an opposite to me. They love each other as well but isn't Vecchio the edgier one, the one with questionable values and techniques...? That said, I understand to hate the new guy (like some in the thread), I just can't relate since I love Kowalski and I find him funnier.
