Hey, look, it's a blog! I know that may seem a bit unfamiliar here, but let's just see how it turns out.

First off, a work update...

***SPOILER***

And now, for some good old-fashioned television!

Something Old

Buffy the Vampire SlayerSeason 6

While rewatching some episodes of Season 6, I noticed that at one point or another, I really disliked each of the main characters. Maybe this was intentional on the part of the writers, but I thought it was interesting, since I don't usually actively dislike certain characters, where others I find it hard to like at all.

Giles: He's not around the whole season, but it's just enough to make me mad at him. I really did not like how he just gave Buffy some money to solve her financial problems. I thought that this was the easy way out for Buffy and pretty much at that point I was not very sympathetic to her problems anyway. I feel Giles could have been more helpful to her if he had stayed and gave her more guidance on being an adult. His main redeeming qualities this season are a fantastic singing voice and showing up with some awesome mojo to use on DarkWillow and slow her down enough for Xander to talk some sense into her.

Tara: I was disappointed that she left Willow. I agree that Willow was relying on magick way too much, but she needed Tara's support to fight the addiction. It's when Tara left that Willow became reckless with magick, and led her to de-rat Amy. Once Amy was in the picture as Willow's companion instead of Tara, Willow was on a slippery slope. I think if Tara had stayed, Willow might not have gone so far into the Dark Magick, even when Tara was killed. I also think that Dawn needed Tara's guidance since she obviously wasn't getting any from Buffy.

Xander: He didn't do much during most of the season to endear himself to anyone. But of course, leaving Anya at the altar was his low point. Yeah, he brought the musical demon to town, which was also bad, but at least we got songs and dances, even if we didn't get the happy ending. It's rather ironic that he summoned Sweet just so he and Anya would work out, when in fact it was Xander's own fault that they did not.

Anya: Turning back into a vengeance demon really made me mad at her. Normally I wouldn't care one way or another because Anya is one of my least favorite characters. It was only in "Hell's Bells" when she tries so hard to write her vows, and finally as she has finished them, we discover that Xander is gone. That was the first episode that I actually cared about Anya, so her subsequent actions upset me. Then of course, sleeping with Spike was another reason to be mad at her. She might have had her reasons, but it certainly didn't help smooth things over with Xander.

Spike: It was only late in the season that I wanted to hate Spike. Clearly, when he slept with Anya it was because Buffy had rejected him, but that was not the solution, and only served to make things even worse for Anya and Xander. But Spike's lowest point was trying to rape Buffy in "Seeing Red." He thought he could convince her to take him back by violence and I actually think that this was out of character for Spike. Yes, his relationship with Buffy did include some level of violence (see "Smashed") but even he isn't demented enough to think that she would want him back if he forced himself on her.

Buffy: I didn't care much for Buffy at all this season. Of course dying and being resurrected is going to have some effect on you, so maybe I should cut her some slack. Nah. She didn't take much responsibility for financial or family matters and let Giles, Willow and Tara handle most of those for her. She definitley neglected Dawn and let her get into trouble. And I didn't much like how she handled the whole Spike thing. Personally, I have nothing against Buffy and Spike getting together. She did it mainly for some fun, but then she didn't enjoy it. If you are going to fool around with someone, at least admit that to yourself and have some fun. Instead she not only hid the relationship from her friends, but tried to deny it to herself and she hurt everyone in the process. It was particularly unfair to Spike since he was in love with her but she treated him like garbage, or worse. Granted, by the end of the season he deserved it, but not before he slept with Anya ortried to rape Buffy.

Willow: I was pretty upset with Willow for most of the season, which is saying a lot because she had been my favorite character. I never enjoyed the DarkWillow episodes, but I think it's interesting to see her transformation, which really starts well before Tara gets killed. It's only because Willow has been using too much magick and learning about the dark magick that she even has the ability to do what she did to Warren. From using magick on Tara, to putting Dawn in danger to eventually seeking revenge on the Trio for Tara's death, Willow was unlikable most of the season. Her final attempt to destroy the world really made me hate her. That was beyond revenge. I never went back to liking her as much as before, even in season 7 when she was good again.

Something New

Separated at birth?

I just could not help noticing the resemblence between Dean (Jared Padalecki) in Gilmore Girls S2 and Riley (Marc Blucas) in Buffy the Vampire Slayer S4.

I just about finished Season 3 of Gilmore Girls, and will discuss next time. Buffy S6 ended up being so long....

It's nice that you're getting a paid vacation-time! And that your work problems seem to be getting sorted.

With Buffy season 6, at times I didn't like some of the characters, but I thought Tara was great that season, even though she left Willow (who I still loved this season).
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:03 am PT
hi neil! well, i still don't know about work. i'm kind of worried they sent me home and not just let me do the other stuff. but they are saying they really need me to be 100% for the holidays which are the busiest time, so i guess they are planning to keep me around.

Tara was the character I was least upset wtih in S6. I wish she had stayed, and i don't think that would have kept her from getting killed necessarily, but she provided a lot of stability for everyone else. did you cry (or get sad) when she died? i did not. it was sudden and shocking, but not really sad for me.

Hello again
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:11 am PT
I have to disagree with you on Buffy’s behalf (because we go WAY back. Like seven years.)

Firstly, she is a slayer. She has slayer duties. She cant afford to have a job, a destined job and look after the house (Dawn is also older now, and very annoying so she needn‘t be baby sat as much). Besides, Willow was living in her home, she had to repay in some way. Giles knew that Buffy and the others wouldn’t have been able to learn the lessons and they did from their mistakes if he stayed around and “lead” her by his “hand.”

Secondly, she didn’t get with Spike for fun. She was pulled out of heaven, of all places, by her friends. Going from Nirvana, to normalcy. She needed to feel - AYTHING - even if it was disgust, or a cheeky pleasure for a few minutes. Because otherwise she would have been better off dead.

I’m not nit-picking, just given mah own opinion

lin--it's interesting because i hadn't noticed this about S6 either until i was trying to come up with some different sort of discussion of the season, and realized that yes, each character did something very serious to make me dislike them. usually it's something minor or the character is mainly good.

no mention of Riley/Dean? you don't need to watch the show to see how similar they are in looks/hairstyle. they are similar in personality too actually

I would have to agree with MovieMark. I can't say I hated or disliked any of the characters in season 6. Well, maybe Dawn. Lol. I didn't like Giles leaving just because he wasn't there, but I agree with what he did. The money I thought was nice. It may of been an easy way out Buffy, but it's not going to take care of everything. The rest is on her. He had to leave for the others to step up to the plate. If he stayed there to continue to help and guide them, how would they find their way, you know?. It made sense to me.

I don't know about Dean and Riley. The hair, maybe. Lol.

That treat is mine!, as well as the middle lovely lady in the "Something Blue" section. Lol.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:25 am PT
I think that if they wanted you to leave, they would have been honest about it and certainly not pay you while you were at home.

But I really hope you take this time to rest up and get better Let Kimmy massage your hand and your arm

You're head on about what you said on all the characters on Buffy. With the exception of very few highlights, season 6 is probably my least favorite season. I loved the first 3, I have some kind of love/hate relationship with 4, 5 and 7 (because those have lot's of great moments) but I had the hardest time dragging myself through the 6th season. Her "relationship" with Spike was... ugh... *tries not to vomit*
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:27 am PT
mark--those are all good points. i like to get debates going! i think you are right about buffy and spike, and i hadn't really looked at it the right way. i guess she succeeded in feeling something, since she did hate herself for it. however, in "Gone" she was playing around with him a lot, and i can't see her doing that if she was just with him to feel "something." i think she was looking for some fun and pleasure in the connection. back to giles and the money, i agree she could not have a regular job because slayer duties don't happen on a schedule, but even if she couldn't earn the money she still had a responsibility to dawn to be a guiding force in her life and not leave the difficult decisions to everyone else. that was something that made me dislike buffy this season. i'm not saying that giles should have been there, more that giving her the money and then leaving was not the best way for him to support her and still let her learn her life's lesson.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:38 am PT
lin--yes, riley was blah. but he was possibly still buffy's best chance for a long-term relationship. most people say not to settle, but given the 3 choices, he was certainly the one that had some potential to work out, if buffy had only let him into her life more. but that's another season
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:41 am PT
barry--see my rebuttal comment to mark about giles and the money not liking dawn is pretty much a given, which is why she didn't get her own comment.

you can have all the ladies, you just have to share
Posted Jul 17, 2007 10:55 am PT
Correct me if I'm wrong, but all my life I thought Jared P. was playing Sam Winchester.. Not Dean...

Shame on you EM, SHAAAME!!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 11:16 am PT
thats cool you get time off work and still get paid but i guess its because you have to rest and dont do much. lol. i proberly would still do stuff. hehe. your sure right about Jared and Marc!! i love the comics and the pictures!! yummm strawberries!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 11:18 am PT
jo--Jared played a character called "Dean" on Gilmore Girls S1-3. On SN he does play Sam... not a mistake, at least not on my part
Posted Jul 17, 2007 11:19 am PT
awwww SHOOT!! I was starting to give props to myself for paying such attention to details
*hides in shame*
HAHAHA!! Never watched GG... I have a good excuse
Posted Jul 17, 2007 11:44 am PT
Hey Em I had most of those same Thoughts about Season 6. You could tell Joss wasn't around much except for Once More, with Feeling.
Loved the Punnies
Finally some see the the think w/Dean & Riley. Told My Hubby you could switch them and nobody would notice *runs to hide from the all Jared Fans*
Posted Jul 17, 2007 12:25 pm PT
kim--yes, i need to get kimmy to make me feel better just talked to my boss and he says just stay home and rest until Monday when i have the next dr. appt. it feels so strange. i reminded him of a few things he needs to do while i am gone so at least it makes me look organized and helpful...

i think i mostly agree with you on buffy seasons though i liked S4 more than most people. there were a lot of good episodes. did you read my blog where i did a whole top 20 reasons S4 didn't suck? i didn't mind spike and buffy. it was not vomit-inducing for me. i just wish she was able to give it more of a chance than she did and treated him better...though he didn't get anyhwere near what he deserved when he attacked her
Posted Jul 17, 2007 1:17 pm PT
hi grace! glad you liked all the jokes. i am using my free time to do some housework and watching tv. too bad i can't go away for a few days, but i got called for jury duty on thursday, so i can't go out of town until i find out whether i'll be on a jury or not
Posted Jul 17, 2007 1:18 pm PT
jo--that's ok, not everyone can be as on top of everything as i am. but keep trying yes, you do have a good excuse to watch GG. jared is quite sweet in it. it's a very different character from sam, so it's fun to watch
Posted Jul 17, 2007 1:27 pm PT
The vampire riddles were....unexpected.
And while I LOVVEE Dead/Jared I totally HATE Riley/Marc.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 1:58 pm PT
I didn't cry when she died, I loved Tara, but the way she died just wasn't as sad as say... Joyce's death, I cried during "The Body" because everyone was affected by Joyce's death, I really didn't like that Tara's death got sidelined by Dark Willow.

Though I did like the Dark Willow arc, Alyson Hannigan rocked in those episodes...
Posted Jul 17, 2007 2:10 pm PT
Season 6 was my least favourite one. I couldn't help noticing youdidn't include Dawn. I can understand ignoring her tho, she isn't the best character!LOL! Also, gotta love those bad jokes!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 2:28 pm PT
Hey Em!! I totally didn't see the similarity between dean and Riley, actually still don't, except for the hair that is Also, love vampire humor, especially since I seem to be part Vampire cause of all the late nights, and I really hate sunlight, and can't go outside without sunglasses !! "Vampire.....that gets funnier every time I hear it"
Posted Jul 17, 2007 3:30 pm PT
tammy--late happy birthday again. not sure if you my birthday wishes in other blogs glad someone else agrees with me about Buffy S6 but i do enjoy hearing other people's opinions! ....yes, as soon as i saw dean's haircut i immediately thought of riley and looked for a good pic that would show the resemeblance. not sure i got the best ones, but it's close enough for people who are watching both ...i think jared was cute in that role and it was fun in GGS3 watching him finally fighting with jess. i don't think dean was the right guy for rory, but she deserved better than jess and i'm glad dean kicked his butt
Posted Jul 17, 2007 3:50 pm PT
hi christy--what was unexpected about the vampire jokes, except maybe how bad they were. there aren't many good ones out there and i've probably already used the good ones up i liked riley in S4 of buffy but not in S5. sure he was kind of boring, but other than that he was a good guy. nothing wrong with a good guy. that's why i think dean in GG and riley in BtVS are so similar, not just the look but the personality as well
Posted Jul 17, 2007 3:53 pm PT
neil--good points about tara's death. i think willow went a bit overboard on the revenge and didn't grieve or let anyone else grieve for her, including the audience. i just couldn't cry. i thought alyson was great in the role, but i didn't like what willow was doing and that she totally cut off buffy and xander when they only wanted to help her. of course they couldn't bring tara back but they wanted to try and help her deal with the loss....

i think joyce's death and how it was treated in "The Body" was done so well. when i first saw her dead on the couch i did not feel sad, but by the end of the ep i was in tears.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 3:57 pm PT
pete--as i mentioned in another comment on a comment, dawn was already pretty annoying and nothing she did in S6 made me feel any differently abuot her. i was trying to focus on the things that made me feel differently about the characters than i usually did. dawn = annoying pretty much all the time

yeah, those jokes were awful
Posted Jul 17, 2007 3:58 pm PT
luv--hey girl! yeah those vamp jokes are silly. i sometimes feel like i'm a vampire too since it's been so hot here i keep the shades closed all the time and try not to go out till it cools off. i wish i could stay up later but need to be up so early for work are you gonna visit when kimmy does? we could have such a great time if you do. of course kimmy and i will have fun anyway, but it will be better if you can join us!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 4:01 pm PT
The Far Side has a ton of good vamp cartoons.

I'm not a huge fan of season 6, but I didn't hate the characters for how they acted. To me it all seemed appropriate for the characters at the time.

I missed Giles during the season, but he wanted to spend more time in England and it was the best they could do. His return has on of my favorite lines from the show, so I can forgive it.

Season 6 was one big Id fest. They were all Parker.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 4:38 pm PT
My EMmy!!
Hey atleast your getting paid to stay home!! Sucks that they sent you home though.

Season 6 was definitely not my fave season, or in the top 4 for that much!! I loved the musicial eppy! And buffys 21st b-day eppy!! But not overly impressed with it compared to the others.

WOOHOO For Vampires!! I really do think I would make a kick a$$ Vamp!! I really really do!!

Dang, nice hotties!!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 4:51 pm PT
auntie--i think most of what the characters did in S6 was appropriate, my comment was more that each one did something very bad to the other characters, their best friends/family. most seasons the big bad is something outside of the group and they unite against it. this season the bad stuff was more internal to the group and their actions affected each other more because of it and that reinforced the pain they caused each other. i think the season was designed that way, and as you said, everyone was acting on their own impulses and less as part of a group/team/family than before. it's only the end of S7 when everyone really unites again against a common enemy.

i understand about Tony Head/Giles situation, but it's more external to the show and i wanted to focus on how the characters acted.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 4:51 pm PT
kimmy--s6 had "Life Serial" and "Tabula Rasa" both of which are great fun. In fact "Tabula Rasa" made it hard to like "Spin the Bottle" on AtS, since it seemed kind of like a rip-off version of TR.

i guess as long as i still have a job to go back to, i shouldn't complain about not working. if i didn't have jury duty on thursday i could go away or something!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 5:04 pm PT
You have to feel for poor Buffy as she has to be a slayer all her life. Being a slayer is a blessing and a curse in disguise.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 5:16 pm PT
kimmy--i can't believe you didn't even comment on the dean/riley look alike thing!
Posted Jul 17, 2007 5:28 pm PT
I keep trying to comment, but I keep getting interupted. I promise I'll be back tomorrow. Now I'll just say those were REALLY bad vampire jokes.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 5:56 pm PT
Jp--this is true, though after S7 she has a lot of help and could easily take a vacation....now and then.

I'm a big fan of S6, although I can't really find the energy in me to argue it's pros right this moment.

So you'll have to take my word that the season is good.
Posted Jul 17, 2007 8:47 pm PT
nick--hey i never said the season wasn't good. i just said that everyone did something very bad during the season and hurt each other by it. see my comments to auntarlene for more details. i don't think the trio was the only thing they were fighting against that season, in some cases it was each other or themselves. so in this season they were not united fighting an outside evil. ...
Posted Jul 17, 2007 8:56 pm PT

OMG kimmy, you are extra blonde today! not just their hair, but their personalities too. Like dean beats up jess, and riley tries to kick angel's @$$...only dean wins and so does angel. well the old BF wins...lots of stuff. i could have done more but i was kinda tired after all the buffy rambling i had done...
