Since the existence of civilization, humanity has continued on a path that will lead to the eventual destruction of itself. I've seen this truth for many years now and my thoughts are reinforced day after day by the people that surround me and influence my life. I've come to the conclusion that far too much apathy exists in the world today with the focus only on self. Granted, a utilitarian perspective is needed on some issues, but the individual needs to always be taken into consideration in all matters. This deontological approach is very important for all people inhabiting the planet. If each person was taken into consideration during the formation of foreign policy, there is no doubt that third-world countries would not be as exploited as they are today. The United States is without a doubt, the greediest country on the face of this Earth. What is each of us willing to give to improve the existence of another? Humility, friendship, and altruism are all becoming extinct. I fear that morality and correct ethical attitudes will pass away and be replaced by self-indulgence and arrogance. It's a shame that others no longer matter for many, but hopefully at least a few will realize the error of their ways. That's all that I can wish for during my short time on this planet.

When you get right down to it, we are not that much different from other animals. We still fight when we feel we are threatened. I've always felt that one of the things that sets us apart from the other animals, and one of the things that has lead to the world today was our ability to remember. In our early history, as civilizations grew, the territories began to overlap. Just as other animals do when their territory is impeded upon, fights broke out. However, since had memory, we could begin to hold grudges. Also, if something was a threat before, there would be no reason to think that it wouldn't be a threat later. So, it would make sense to eliminate those threats.
Fast forward to today and I think you'll agree that we haven't really changed all that much. The only difference between today and back then is that instead of only being able to kill a few people with spears and such, we can kill hundreds of thousands because of our increased technology.
I don't think this will lead to our destruction though. There may come a point where a whole lot of people die, but I don't think human beings as a species will go extinct with anything short of the complete destruction of the world.
