That was an amazing movie, I didn’t have a watch with me, so I had no concept of time, and the movie seemed to fly by. Let’s start with the visuals, since hearing about the film, I’ve been checking out the 300 comic, and as with Sin City, they did an amazing job keeping true to the comic. Everything was vibrant and crisp, and even the smallest details helped to enhance the scene. Then there were the creatures and the Persian Army, they did some amazing things here, none of which I’ll spoil. And yes, there was blood, LOTS of blood, but hey, it’s Sparta, what’re ya gonna do? Next up, Acting & Story. As with the visuals, they kept close to the story as well, nothing new there where Frank Miller’s involved. I have to admit, aside from Leonidas, I half-expected the other Spartans to be one-word grunts on the whole. And though some of them didn’t have more than a handful of lines, they exuded the established essence of being a Spartan. All in all, the movie was great, although I have to admit there were some people in the theater that were slightly confused by the ending.

Zombie Nation…what a horribly deceiving title. This was apparently given to the people of the world by the director of Boogeyman. While not a great movie, it wasn’t horrible. Also, it was put out by Lionsgate, which has a fairly good track record. This movie on the other hand, doesn’t help that record. I don’t even know where to start. I mean the plot was convoluted to begin with, and it only got worse with every jagged cut to the past. The acting was quite poor, not that the writing was stellar to begin with. The special effects were practically non-existent. I’m not sure if the director was going for a minimalist zombie flick or what, but this is perhaps the worst Zombie film I’ve ever seen.

Talk about a great film noir. Not something you see a lot nowadays. It's not a genre that's big any more. But a film noir in the vein of one of comicdom's most brilliant minds? Jackpot!

Talk about a great film noir. Not something you see a lot nowadays. It's not a genre that's big any more. But a film noir in the vein of one of comicdom's most brilliant minds? Jackpot!

Frank Miller is a comic genius, one who previously never let his work into the film world. Thankfully, he decided to let Robert Rodriguez take a shot at it after seeing a short clip Rodriguez produced. This culminated into one of the best movies of 2005. Yes, it can be quite graphic, but if you’d read the comics, this shouldn’t be a shock, nor after seeing the previews. A film noir is gritty, tough, and doesn’t hold anything back. And Sin City takes it to a new level. The acting is top-notch, the cinematography is simply stunning, and the movie doesn’t drag thanks to the way it is split into separate vignettes. All in all Sin City is everything it should be: fantastic, graphic, true to its basis, and mostly, unforgiving. Now here's a movie I've wanted to see for a while, even back when it was in theaters. I never got the chance. Since then rave reviews have cropped up all over and the term "Sleeper Hit of the Year" has been attached, thus generating a lot of hype. Hype can be great, but it can also hurt a film(see Superman Returns). Luckily, the hype had little effect on this film. Why? Because it's a masterpiece. It shows that just because a family is completely dysfunctional in almost every way, they can still love and care for each other, and stand up for them. This is a great message, especially in today's crazy world where the "normal" family is a rare creature. The acting was fantastic, particularly by Steve Carrell, Paul Dano, and Abigail Breslin. The film also had a great flow, maybe due in part to the mode of transportation the family takes, but it never seems to stop, all the way up to the end.

Pulse could’ve been worse for a remake. Some of the acting is a bit over the top, but Kristen Bell and Ian Somerhalder do a nice job of supporting the rest. Having seen the original, it had quite a bit to live up to. I mean c’mon, who dares touch Kurosawa? The whole film has a rather dulcet tone about it, low lighting, and some great takes on the creepy visual effects(a la The Ring) needed to create an atmosphere that just screams, literally. Although it can be a bit jarring at times, because you’re not sure if they’re trying to keep that eerily silent angle, or shooting for scares. Primarily in the sense that the scares seemed a bit forced, rather than having that natural flow.

Part of what makes this film scary to watch, particularly as a rental, is that its most sinister scenes occur in places everyone has in their home. Sure it’s not exactly the most plausible premise, but if you want reality, there’s a whole TV network for that.

Well, looks like it's time for another raucous romp with those crazy guys at Broken Lizard. After a particularly twisted opening, two brothers find themselves shipped off to Germany for Oktoberfest, in order to spread the ashes of their dead father. After a troublesome start at Oktoberfest, the brothers soon discover the underground “Beerfest� where teams from all over the world come to compete in various drinking games. Once they discover that America has no representation, they set out to create their own team and compete in the games to regain their family honor and prove Americans can drink. Of course, in true Broken Lizard tradition, things don’t quite work out as they should for the film’s protagonists. I’d give the overall story 3.25/5 stars. The film itself was great, there were quite a few notable stars show up throughout the film, and it’s always interesting to seem them in this particular atmosphere. Cloris Leachman in particular does an outstanding job as the brothers “Great Gam Gam.� There were a few downsides to it though, it felt as though the movie ran a bit long. Although this is countered by many cultural references to Beer and beer games. And Jay Chandrasekhar has still got that touch that makes these movies fun to watch.

I mean, if you can get past his creepy, somewhat disturbing, and general outlandish ideas and drawing styles, you're good.

I mean, if you can get past his creepy, somewhat disturbing, and general outlandish ideas and drawing styles, you're good.

Armed with a mind for the macabre, Jhonen is the genius behind Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Invader ZIM. ZIM is an all-time favorite of mind, the crazy characters, the very detailed drawings of some of the strangest sights to ever been seen on Nickelodeon.

Sadly ZIM never got the full chance it needed to soar from cult classic to all out hit. Nonetheless, Jhonen's work is never to be underestimated is best read or viewed in a dimly lit setting, to allow for maximum effect.
