After over 3 years of unemployment, umpteen job seeking courses & 2 volunteer full time jobs (not at the same time btw) , I finally have a paying job!
Only had the interview on Friday (Oct 12 07) and by the Saturday (Oct 13 07) I'd been offered a job in merchandising. 1st 'contract' im on is up in Inverurie (300 miles away up near Aberdeen) for 2 weeks doing 12 hours on nightshift starting Monday(!), which is going to be a pain until I get used to it. Still its £6 an hour (going upto £7 in the very near future) and I desperately need some money for Xmas, a new PC (since the lappy is pretty much useless now) and for all the new games coming out, although with uz working away from home, forking out for games might not be the greatest use of my money, although my DS'll get the life played out of it with all the travelling I'll be doing.
Anyay I'm off now, off to get drunk and celebrate

you get used to being out of work, and tbh im still stuck in skint mode (ie id still rather hunt around and get something cheap, or even go without it til it turns up in a sale or whatever). only real problem with being unemployed that long is you can only really afford to go out every so often, which sucks when everyone else has jobs and are all out enjoying themselves without you
i wasn't totally jobless for 3 years btw, i had a couple of volunteer jobs which the job centre said would really help on my CV... they didnt. 1st 1 was at the sunderland stadim of light, wangled that 1 cos ive got a couple of relatives working there, pity they couldn't get me anything paying though. and the only other 1 was at some graphic design place, but since i was a volunteer i couldn't really get into as much as id would've like (ive done graphic design work before, but left it to go to college).
and the main reason i was out of work for so long was 1) i honestly could not be arsed with getting a job. after a while you start getting used to 'not' working (hence the volunteer jobs, to try and shake that off), 2) there was nowhere i deemed fit for me to work at and 3) everywhere that was 'ggod enough' for me, knocked me back, so methinks my standards are just a bit too high.
anyway the job centre sent me on 1 of there courses that they send people on to try and help them get jobs and the office next to where the course was at was the place that now employs me, the 2 of them obviously got together to help themselves (and me of course) and thus i got a job just like that.
i did my 2 weeks in inverurie, came back for a week (in which i just got really drunk and spent all my wages on boose, prompting me to give up alcohol, at least until after xmas) and then they sent me back up for another week. was weird cos everyone actualyl noticed that id been, gone and come back, which i didnt expect.
been back 2 weeks now and work just haven't rang me to offer me any more work, which is a bummer, but i guess thats just how it goes. anyhoo im an orf now.
