Today I was with a friend of mine who depises my taste in music. I got into an arguemet trying to convince him the reasoning behind the construction of some of my favourite bands and that they have a good influence on society, whilst his music does the opposite.

He listens to all the mainstream stuff, ie, anything that comes onto the radio thats popular he likes. Essentially hes a real music conformist. So I showed him just how crazy the music industry has become. Kids listen to this music and see the vocalist as an idol or someone to admire and look up to. Frankly I beleive that these people who are seen as 'idols' should be slapped for what they are teaching the adults of tomorrow.

Let's take for example the song Just Dance by Lady Gaga.

She makes constant reference to getting drunk ('And were getting all hosed tonight') , getting it on with boys ('Shut my playboy mouth'), and teaching women like they are seen rather then heard ('When I come through on the dance floor checkin out that catalogue')

Essentially this song is slowly brainwashing the listeners into thinking that this is 'cool'. That getting drunk is right, and following rules isn't.

If you still don't beleive me let's pick another song, like.. Get Low by Flo Rida feat etc..

Let me just say that I won't go too much into the lyrics of this song, but seriously,

She hit the flo [She hit the flo]
Next thing you know
Shawty got low low low low low low low low

??? she hit the flo?

No doubt she got low on the flo if you get what im saying.

So after prooving my mates music was absolutely terrible he attempted to diss my music.

As my music taste is hardcore/metal, he stated, word for word, that:

Him wrote:

Your music is S&%t all it is, is random screaming where you cannot make sense of the lyrics and even if you could it would just be about killing yourself and death and that crap. As if that is good for society!

Ok this is pretty much when I went rage. Sure the lyrics may not be decipherable but I hate the fact that everyone who doesn't like screamo/hardcore music assumes that all it is is about death and killing people. There are a large majority of hardcore bands, which just so happen to be MY favourites, that are straightedge.

Straightedge: To be against and to not participate in drinking, drugs or smoking.

They sing about being against drugs, being yourself and having a good time. Sure at times you may find it dipping into that catagory but you cant just assume all of it is bad.

This is why I hate mainstream music. They become millionares off their lyrics that are destroying society and hardcore bands that are just as talented and straightedge, are earning not much at all.

..

He shut up after I had my speal. Thought id post up innmy blog to see if anyone agrees, sorry if its a bit all over the pace, i wrote this in about 10 minutes.

And that's my rant for the week.

But getting drunk is fun and having sex is fun And in a way, the kids learn from the songs to break rules, so they do. But this isn't a bad thing, they'll make a mistake, get caught for doing it and learn from it so they don't do it again in the future. And I mean, come on, life is short. We shouldn't waste our youth doing what other people want us to do, I call a rebellion against all authority. We gotta fight, for our right, to paaarrrtaaaay! But seriously, we gotta go out and have a good time, not sit at home worrying about the consequences.

I've never heard of these artist. The stuff I listen to is pretty clean...at least, cleaner than most mainstream music. In fact, "Here's to Life" seems to be about how pop culture is flawed and the writer is realizing that all of his role models have killed themselves and he's like..."oh...this sucks." Check it out, it may quench some of your anger. "Here's to Life" by either Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution or Streetlight Manifesto. Cool trombone parts, too.

@ IPwnzyou: I would have to disagree, sure if your view of having 'fun' is going out having sex and partying then so be it. But you may find yourself with brain injuries and possibly death from those so called mistakes. So many kids are dying at young ages because of drinking and stupid stunts like copying shows like Jackass, and The Dudesons. Just because you have the option to rebel against authority doesn't mean that its the smart option. Think about it, Why should kids throw away there innocence, like loosing your vs, when sex is so overrated. If you have sex at a young age, what would you do when your older? If then, what would the next generation become? Sex at age 8?

Surely, you can have a good time without drugs, alcohol and sex. In fact some of the happiest people I know are straightedge. @ Dubel: Thanks for your suggestion of music. It will be good to look at how other artists relate to eachother. Thanks! =]

@djburnzy, I know theres a limit, and I don't exceed the limit. But sitting at home reading books because your parents told you not to go outside isn't fun. And like I said, if some kid does something from Jackass, he gets hurt (maybe breaks his leg) and won't do it again. Unless he's sick and he likes being in pain. And I know that you can have fun without these things, but live your life is all I'm saying. Don't waste this precious time you have now because you're afraid of getting caught. And sex at 8 wouldn't work, you don't go through puberty until you're around 13

@pwnz: Put simply, alcohol is a drug, it is MEANT to cause harm to your body. It is stupid to even have a sip of alcohol. If people underage are drinking then it will dumb down our next generation of kids due to the fact that these people have been drinking from a young age. Amount in irrelevant, it is still harmful to your body. As is smoking, As is drugs. It is stupid to even suggest drinking or drugs or anything falling in that category as 'fun'. It is most definitely unintelligent, reckless, and is destroying our society.
Terrorism is no longer a threat anymore, no one needs to kill us to get attention, most of us are already doing it ourselves.
