I say that with a game that I've been following on the ps3, heavy rain. I know that the game looks great and will probably be awesome, but it really got me thinking, can too much realism hurt a game? While I know that games what to be in touch with reality, most people like myself play videogames to escape from reality and get lost in a completly different world. What I guess I'm saying is that realism in gaming I think shouldn't been the main point in a game. You hear developers talk all the time that they were trying to make their game so realistic, and I'm just thinking who cares about relality, it's a videogame. I know with games like Madden, Fight Night, and Military Shooters they all go for realism, but what ever happened to a games that had crazy weapons and features that competly said screw reality. Just what I've been thinking about for a little while. What do you think?
P.S.
I am looking forward to heavy rain and think it's going to be awesome, don't take it the wrong way ^_^

i totally hear what you're saying... i embrace realism as long as it's there to support the believeablility of the game, even if in reality you know that the things in the game could never happen. Games should push the boundaries of our imaginations, and be convincing about it. But i think it would be a shame if they lost that element of fantasy all together; after all, otherwise you may as well just live your real life

I don't think it is a bad thing if that's what the developer is going for. You can have a blend of both in a game, but it is hard to pull off.

Realism in a game only adds to it when it is really good. I like it in some cases where it is shown but really dislike it when a game is made to look real but has nothing special to back it up. But yeah, a game that pushes the player to go beyond the world of realism and just into imagination is good. Realism is just an added bonus if it can be pulled off successfully.
