Tis the Season
Well, I had a good Thanksgiving. How about you? It all started Thursday when my wife’s family converged at her aunt and uncle’s house. There were forty some odd people there, and nobody went home hungry. The turkey was deep fried, of course, and complimented with some pretty good dressing. My favorite sides though were seven layer salad and sweet potato casserole. Dessert was pecan pie, banana pudding, and peanut butter fudge. Friday was a shopping day, but more about that in a moment. Saturday, I met my side of the family at Cracker Barrel. Everyone was a little worn out with home cooking by then. Sunday morning, we went to Burger King for breakfast. My daughter wanted a Star Wars watch, but I said no since she doesn’t wear the one she already has. I am sneaking back today to get her one for Christmas. Sunday Afternoon, we made some Snowman cupcakes. They are a fun kid food, but are a lot of trouble to make and a lot of trouble to eat. I put my daughter to bed reading her favorite Christmas book. However, getting her up and getting her ready for school this morning was like dealing with someone else entirely. Still, once again this year, I am astounded that I have so much for which to be thankful. Oh, and I watched a lot of tv over the weekend. Anybody catch up on your television watching over the holiday?
Friday, Blacky Friday
Black Friday earned its name by being the day when many businesses show their first profit for the year. The best deals I heard about were for a computer and a camera, neither of which I am in the market for. While we didn’t venture out into the early morning rush, we did take a leisurely stroll through the local outlet mall. My brother and sister-in-law joined us and we enjoyed the outing very much. We got some stocking stuffers at Claires and at KB toys. My wife got a timer at one of the kitchen places as a means of getting my daughter to hurry up when she is doing chores. Did you do any shopping over the holiday?
Check Please…
However, the weirdest part of Friday came when we had finished shopping and had gone out to eat. We went to O’Charleys which is one of our favorite local stops. My brother and sister and law and us all had babysitting for the little ones, so it was a nice time to get together. The waiter started out by saying, “I am here to serve you. I promise I am going to take good care of you.” He then proceeded to be one of the worst waiters we have ever had, and certainly the worst we have ever encountered at that particular restaurant. Here’s the rub. If he hadn’t come off so arrogantly at the beginning, all of us would have been forgiving. However, it got so bad; we had to flag down another waitress to try to help us. My solution with bad service is to adjust the tip accordingly. However, my sister in law was so upset; she went to see the manager. The manager conferred with our second waitress, and the next thing we know the manager is telling us our bill has been taken care of. My wife and I don’t usually complain in restaurants. We are the kind that just won’t come back if the food or service isn’t good. However, the manager seemed generally pleased that she had been made aware of the situation, and seemed glad to get the opportunity to do something to make it right. Somehow from her tone and actions, I get the feeling that the guy who was our first waiter won’t be there when we go back. Have you ever had non-service at a restaurant? If so, what did you do?
People’s Choice Awards
The second round of voting for the People’s Choice Awards is now open. Here are today’s picks:
Favorite Female TV Star: Jennifer Love Hewitt wins in front of Teri Hatcher and Jennifer Garner. I think “none of the above” is the best choice.
Favorite Male TV Star:Kiefer Sutherland wins in a landslide against Ray Romano and Charlie Sheen.

AotD1: Not having had a holidy, I didn't get the time to use to catch up on my TV watching.
Or my ironning (sp?) for that matter.
Aotd2: Still no holiday, but I did go shopping for a few more people on the weekend. Just regular Christmas shopping though .. no crazy deals.
AotD3: I get non-service or bad service everytime I go to the Keg. I have found a place that has better food at a better price, so I go there for steak instead.
This one time, I went to the Keg for a birthday party (not mine) and there were only four of us. I put our name on the list at 6pm when I got there anmd was told there's about a 45 minute wait. Since it was birthday boy's choice restaurant we waited in the hall since the bar was full.
At 6:45pm I asked how much longer, and was told that it would be about 20 minutes more. At 7:05pm (I'm a dink about time) they said it was almost our turn. And at 7:15pm it finally was our turn to be seated. That was a full 30 minutes longer than they said and I asked about it. They told me that I had only been waiting 45 minutes and that we had been seated properly.
This was my introduction to "Keg time".
In reality, the chick acting as hostess lost a sheet and we were re-added to the list. They won't admit that, but I looked at my name everytime I went up and it changed writting style at one point (different girl wrote it down).
Then we got non-service (waiter? What Waiter) and eventually complained to the manager. Okay, so the birthday boy compalined. We also compalined about the hotesses. By the time we got food it was close to 8:00 and I was starved, so I ate it anyways. There was yet another issue so the manager gave us a free desert.
Big whoop. I don't eat desert at a restaurant as I am usually full from the main dish. When I'm not full it's because the food sucked and I'm not taking another chance.
The only exception is that I get a "platter" meal at Swiss Chalet (mmmmm) which includes a piece of pie.
Oops, long response

What a meal!
I did do some shopping over the weekend. The most fun was shopping for my five year-old goddaughter. Kids' clothes are so cute!
I don't recall ever having such poor service at a restaurant. Of course what I hate above everything - even non-service - is snooty waiters. That I just can't stand.

I pretty much only watched Football over the weekend. Yay!
I went to Best Buy at 7 am. It was pretty picked over but I got the Wireless Router I wanted...for $15!
I always get excellent service at Taco Bell.

Hey! I'm first! Maybe.... I've been reading for a while, and someone else probably left a comment first!
Your holiday sounds very restful!

EDIT: hahaha!
I'm nowhere ~near~ first! Your blogs take a while to read, with all the linking and stuff. BTW, loved the "sneak attack" pic!
EDIT2: Complaining is the right way to go. If you leave a small/no tip, the waiter will just think to himself that ~you~ are the jerk, not him, or that there was anything that his service/lack of service had to do with it. Talking to the management is definitely the thing to do. Because then the waiter gets talked to by someone who has job-power over him, and you get a free meal - which really doesn't cost the restaurant anything at all, trust me. The mark up on the food is ridiculous!

Answer #1: No, not really, I just did my normal television watching.
Answer #2: Yeah, I did some, but I didn't go out rediculously early in the morning. Over the weekend, I just bought 2 presents (making my Christmas shopping almost done).
Answer #3: The last time I had a non-service experience at a restaurant, I just started talking crap about them while still sitting at the table. It's not like he heard anything I was saying about him, since he never came around our table.
And I must say that I totally agree with you for your choices for the People's Choice Awards. See ya later!

Though you were missed terribly I am glad you had a nice time... You didn't miss much here truly.Okay your questions.. Not to much TV this weekend to sick with the flu..
No shopping for me... I am actually done. Except for a layaway that I have to get out yet. But that's it. YAY.....
Oh Oh I am the WORST offender of spouting my mouth when it comes to bad service. My hubby and or my M-I-L or both will wait in the car until I am finished with the manager. (What can I say it's the Italian in me heheheh) I let them know..
It's great to have you back DD
Hugs,
Mary

VMF - I am blessed to have my in laws five minutes away and my parents 30 minutes away. It does wonders for babysitting.
2C - My limit is one hour. If I am not seated and and place my order within one hour, I am out of there. There are just too many alternatives to wait unless they are letting you walk out with a collector's gold plate.
WI - Shopping for babystuff is the best. My wife and I enjoy shopping for our little girls' clothes. My neices and nephews are getting a little older now so they are wanting cash and electronic gadgets these days.
ZugZug - I fell in love with Taco Bell in high school. I have been a big fan ever since. Their prices are not as good as they once were, but it is still a pretty good deal for what you get.
Stig - My blogs are log and very clicky. I am thinking about changing that. But if things work out for me and employment, I will have to substanially reduce my time on the site.
Cali - I am glad someone agrees with me on my picks. I am really hoping Kiefer walks home with the award.
Mary - I wish I was done. I am working on my gift for my wife while I am blopping. I am writing her a story. I hope it turns out well.

Good luck with that! Sounds like it would be an improvement.

Nice picture links
I got 0 TV viewing done this last weekend. The shows just keep piling up!
I also had to work on Black Friday so I didn't get to take advantage of any sales, but that's probably for the better.
Anyway, glad you had a great Thanksgiving!
Cool banner by the way.

Survived the holidays but you were missed!
I always work on Black Friday so I have not shopped in a store yet.I do a lot online because I hate shopping in stores.
My worst experience in a restaurant was at a Friendly's. The waitress was so bad and rude I really thought we were on camera somewhere! When my friend called over the manager he actually said,"I should slap her for that attitude" but did nothing to compensate or even apologise. I wrote to the headquarters and never got a response.I have never have been to Friendly's since. Now my friend and I refer to it as the not very friendly restaurant

Yeah, that non service thing happens on ocation. I'm doing what you do; no tip and never come back.. I also don't recomend the place to others. But I think that telling to management is better in some ways.. then they know there is a problem and can fix it. If I were a manager I'd rather like to know. (I've been a waitres, and if I was doing something wrong in my work I also would like to know, so that I could do better next time).

dorkus - I still have a few shows in me old TiVo queue just waiting for viewing. I never finish it though. I like to know there is always going to choices of good stuff to watch.
sasg - This time of year is tough for school. Exams and tests and all that craziness close in students. Best of luck!
Kimba - there aren't any Friendly's around here. But we have the similar Shoney's. The Shoney's in our town is mismanaged. However, the one 20 miles away is great. But who wants to drive right past one franchise to get to another?
MM - Ok, that does it. From now on I will complain when I receive poor service. you all really twisted my arm!

I managed to catch up on two weeks of Tuesday and Wednesday shows. Something happened to the way the VCR recieves NBC, so I'm probably going to have to stop watching Monday shows.
No shopping. I don't like shopping. If I know that I want a specific item, I want to go get that item, but I do not like the shopping-for-hours thing, especially when it involves trying on clothes or dealing with crazy holiday shoppers. Yay for Amazon.com!
Unfortunately, I have had a ton of bad restaurant experiences ranging from long waits to overcooked food to hair in my food that did not belong to anyone sitting at my table. And yes, I have been subject to a number of crappy waiters/waitresses. When there's a problem, the manager is called for. The last nasty restaurant worker I dealt with (other than the ones I deal with at the one I work at, haha) was the manager.

I did catch up on television viewing over the holiday. I end up getting so far behind during the week. I'm so glad I have a dvr.
I really don't like to shop so I didn't really shop too much this weekend. I did a little online Christmas shopping and I went to Wal-Mart to get a new printer since my Dad gave me the money for a new one. He tried to help me fix my old one (it wouldn't feed the paper correctly) but then he got annoyed and just told me to get a new one since they were on sale this weekend.
So I got that and some Christmas decorations and a new Christmas tree. My cat tore up the old one. He loves Christmas trees. So far he's left the new one alone but I'm not sure how long that will last.
If I get bad service in a restaurant I sometimes complain, other times I just don't go back. It depends on the nature of the bad service and if it's an isolated incident or not.
If it's bad enough I will complain to the Manager. As a restaurant manager I know that I'd like the chance to make things right rather than loose a customer so I assume other managers feel the same way.
I also look at things like how busy the restaurant it, if the person seems new or possibly overwhelmed, etc. But I tend to be harder on people who are in customer service since I know how they are supposed to be doing their job.
Oh yeah, before I forget - I really like your new banner.

No. I didn't watch any more TV than usual.
No. I didn't go shopping.
I usually adjust the tip, but if things are really bad, I complain to the manager. I think I'll just start complaining every time. I didn't think about the waiter/waitress thinking I am a jerk part.

Kimba - correct...sort of. Angelica belts it out in the Rugrats Go Wild movie. My 2 year old watches it over and over and over. It is a cute movie, but alas there is no Shelley Winters.
Lady T. - My wife and I have always tried to be understanding toward the waitstaff. It is a difficult job and more often than not they put up with blame for stuff that isn't their fault. It is unfortunate when things go bad. Happily it doesn't happen to us very often.
Awerlwas - hey, thanks for stopping by! Also, thanks so much for the compliment. I hope folks enjoy reading them as much as I enjoy writing them.
Charisma - Yeah! new printer! I have found that a good printer is worth its weight in Gold. And for the most part, they last. I have gone through a lot more computers over time than printers. As for complaints, I had always thought I didn't want to trouble anybody. I am glad I brought this subject up now. I am adjusting my thinking.
A&S - I had never thought about the "jerk" thing either. My goal is always to make things better rather than bitter. It doesn't seem to really help me or anybody else when I adjust the tip. I leave upset, the waitstaff is upset, and the manager is oblivious.

DD - I'm reading your blog at work and LMAO and I'm just in the first section!
A#1 - just a little catching up due to having to work. (no holiday here)
A#2 - I bought an Irish Dancer Ornament at the Hallmark store and some pants for my son. That's it.
A#3 - I'm sure I have but nothing is coming to mind at the moment. 2am and all.
I use the timer for my kids when they shower, otherwise they'd be in there for an hour!
I'm glad you had a good weekend save for the horible time at the restaurant.
I love your banner too! Must be rubbing off because I caught myself humming some Christmas songs!
