I think the majority of gamers don't get the idea of HOME for the PS3 just yet. Maybe its because its being likened to too many things most aptly current familiar experiences. Its like second life.... XBL + SIMs=HOME, Mii+SIMs+Second Life+XBL=HOME
bahhh.... rubbish.
Lets pull back and look at the big picture. Here is one aspect I can introduce. HOME appeals to gamers and non-gamers alike. It IS about community in the "Playstation" world. Its more likely that a non-gamer (ie. movie buff) would run into a hardcore gamer in the HOME world as apposed to the same thing happening on the Wii or XBL. If a person who bought the PS3 primarily as a inexpensive movie player and goes on the PSN to download content, they might happen on to HOME or get invited. Once in HOME, everything we saw at GDC can be realized. People gathering to see an exclusive trailer... CD listening parties... Advanced Movie screening... Test groups for product advertising... Product Demoing... etc.
Now you (press, enthusist, bloggers, etc...) don't have to go to E3, TGS, etc... The events come to you. Lets say David jaffe has a cool Idea he wants to show the Gaming Press but to do this you have to answer a PSN invite. Upon answering the invite, Press are invited to the Sony HOME HQ where Press can download screens, demos, and clips of everything they see at this virtual release as well as take part in a Virtual Press Q&A session.
How much of the PSN community will embrace HOME and make it as real and inviting as it can be...who knows, but its all up to the users...which IS the idea.

Update. Looks like Sony is on the right path so far. I have read articles here on gamespot that their UK sales have gotten record numbers.
Way to go Sony, you got the launch events wrong but at least you got the units to sell well. Note to Sony: Now that you have the user base established and growing, DO SOMETHING WITH IT!!!
Don't sit on your @ss and let this golden opportunity pass them by.
In other words...GET IT RIGHT!!

X-Box Live was marketed towards "non-gamers"/"causal gamers" at the launch of the 360, and last time I checked I only hear gamers talking about that.(way to go Microsoft...lol).
With the PS3 Sony does have a lot of oppurtunity but, since 2000(maybe a little earlier/maybe a little later) Sony has gotten on the trend of giving itself great potential to expand into a new area and then they do one of two things:
1)They botch it up by not offering all the features they have available because one end of Sony does not coopoerate with the other.(Happened with the PSP and getting music/movies over WiFi...the media end didn't like so no go)[happened again with Walkman MP3 player....the music wanted really restrictive DRM.....this killed off those potential Ipod killers). So here is hoping they all see how this could be beneficial to them(meaning all branches of Sony).
2)They mess things up on a technical level, driving off all but the most hardcore gamers due to technical issues, or difficulty or any of the other ways Sony has gone wrong with thing in the past.
So cross your fingers and hope Sony returns to the ways of old with this, which means getting it RIGHT.
HERE THAT SONY...GET IT RIGHT!!!!
and by that I mean the FIRST TIME, NOT A YEAR'S WORTH OF UPDATES LATER.
