Xbox 360:

I played a bit of Halo 3 earlier in the week. A little but of custom games, but Matchmaking was a bit mistake. The first day we had terrible lag issues. And the second day all we got was AR spawn games in Slayer. Meaning the skill level went way down and the stupidity way up. I stayed away from Halo for the rest of the week.

Rather then Halo, a played a bunch of GTA IV. I could not of had a better time. I laughed so hard the other day playing Free Mode my chest was burning. We had parties of 2-5 people playing mostly Free Mode, with some GTA Race and a bit of co-op.

Finally, given that I had some friends over a couple times this week I played a bunch of Rock Band. I'm damn near mastering songs on Hard drums, and stepping into Expert (Orange Crush FTW!). Kept the guitar skills up as well. My body's very sore from all the playing though. I'm also finishing my achievement hunt in Guitar Hero III, and I had a craving to play some Geometry Wars so I did.

Playstation 3:

I let a friend play through Act 1 of MGS4 with a bit of help, but I also finished up Acts 3 through 5. Knowing what I needed to do, and with the help of Youtube, it was so much better then the first time through. Too much trial and error, the game needs more explanation. Finally, I still think the final boss is too difficult and far from great in my books.

Finally finished Assassin's Creed. Final impressions: combat is fun at times, but gets repetitive and frustrating, and lacks real depth. Free running is cool at times, but Drake from Uncharted climbs up faster then Altair does. The camera also has serious issues, escaping guards and disappearing can be really frustrating, and having them on the roof stops your from free running in the second half. The story is incredibly deep and astonishingly accurate (check Wikipedia), but the ending was was awful. I liked it, but the 9s it got back last year were just ridiculous.

Other:

The Mets went 5-2 this week with their losses coming from the awful bullpen and John Maine's poor start on Saturday. He's the new fifth starter with Pedro stepping up. They kicked the Braves ass (especially in the comeback on Thursday), but let's just say the team has some issues they gotta work through.

The power issues finally got fixed on Tuesday, but not before more issues earlier that day and on Monday. I played some LocoRoco, kicked some Moja ass, and kept all 20 LocoRocos in a level on Monday. And on Tuesday I played some Ape Academy and a bit of Beats.

Finally, I watched the Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget, and man was I laughing hard. Two words: good ****. I highly recommend you give that a look, unless you're faint of heart of easily offended, since it's not exactly TV-Y7 rated.

Let's start this blog entry out with a brief statement: the PSP currently is under no circumstances dead. The bottom line is, the hardware is selling like hot cakes, and even though the attach rate ain't great, they have a larger installed base then the 360 and PS3 combined, and it's beating them both this year in worldwide sales.

But the point of this article isn't to try and convince you that things are great and everything is selling. The point is to try and give an idea for where the PSP should be moving on different points. On games, the hardware, the firmware, online and multiplayer, the piracy issue, and yes, even UMD movies.

SOFTWARE:

This is probably the easiest, but longest to explain. For first party games, it's segmented into four sections. The first, is I want to see main PS3 series that are in between releases get a PSP game. It could be a bridge between the game, a spin off, or just more back story. It wouldn't detract for the console game, but just make a blockbuster PSP game. Maybe PS3 owners would buy a PSP or visa versa because of it.

Secondly, I want to see past franchise revived on the PSP. Some which wouldn't work today on the PS3, some that were forgotten and could be brought back, and some that could be setting up for a full fledged console game if the support is there. Then the games could fall into the first strategy. This could help both platforms out in a big way.

The third is situational, and would require a franchise to have a PS3 and PSP game out about the same time. The systems and games could communicate with each other through USB, Remote Play, or game saves. They could share similar elements or run parallel stories, or just be great console gaming on the go. It could build hype for the franchise and cause people to buy the other platform.

But why not be original? The original, core first party games have been hit and miss, but the more unique stuff has been great. LocoRoco and Patapon are two examples. Games that are different, unique, and might not work on the PS3 could be great here. They could take advantages of the PSP's strong points as well. Why not let Q-Games, the guys making the PixelJunk games have a try at this? For me, this is the spot Sony has struggled in most.

Then you have the third parties, which are gonna need a push to get things going. Square Enix is giving support, but other then that, exclusives and PSP focused games are hard to come by. Multi-platform games are still common, but they aren't anything special, nor do they work to the PSPs strengths. The DS is getting tons of spin offs, why doesn't the PSP? Even series that have had PSP spin offs are DS only now. Sony has to push publishers and put up incentives, and quality games will be made, and will sell. End of story. They should fit into those four strategies as well: bridge games/spin offs, revivals, dual releases, and unique games.

It's all for nothing if it doesn't work for the PSP though. Games need to support the it's strengths and weaknesses. Limited controls need to be worked well, checkpoints and gameplay divisions for on the go play, good local and online multiplayer support, and taking advantage of Remote Play. And why don't developers utilize Game Sharing so four people can play off of one game? You don't need four copies of Halo to play split screen, you shouldn't need four copies of Socom to play local Ad-Hoc.

HARDWARE:

Stop with the hardware revisions. There should only be one revision, and it should come halfway between it's release and the next platform's release. The built in mic, the higher quality screen, and 480i output on the PSP-3000 should of been on the PSP-2000, and it should of come out this year, not last. If I wanted hardware that gets outdated so quickly, I would of bought an iPod.

As far as the SKUs are concerned, it needs a couple tweaks. The Core model should be the basic black, and retail for $150. The Entertainment Bundle should come with a good Greatest Hits game, a 1GB Memory Stick, a soft case, a good movie on UMD, and game voucher for a PS Store game, and that should come in the cool silver for $200. Then the Accessory Bundle should come with a 4GB Memory Stick, a soft case, multi-media headphones, a USB cable, and should come in a smart pearl white for $200. They can change accordingly, but no game specific skinning of the consoles. Save that for the special edition ones like the Madden and God of War bundles.

FIRMWARE:

I don't need a mandatory update every 3 weeks. My take, is there should be a major update (4.10, 4.20) every other month that adds in a couple big, useful features. The other months, you have a minor update (4.05, 4.15) that brings bug fixes and minor tweaks. It wont come on any game disc, and will be totally optional. Choose not to update and the fixes get rolled into the major update. Side note: we need smaller file sizes and shorter installs for the updates. They take too damn long.

As for what should be coming in future updates, I have a couple ideas, but you really just need to listen to the community and give them what they want over time. More options and features means less need for custom firmware, thus less chance for pirated games. Less piracy means higher sales, a more profitable platform, and a higher quantity and quality of games.

ONLINE/MULTIPLAYER:

First, Game Sharing needs to be used in all multiplayer games. A small client will download to your memory stick from the host system which will run the necessities for multiplayer. Then during the game the host will transmit any further data. Up to four systems can run off of one disc. This needs to be a Sony regulated mandatory for all multiplayer games.

For online multiplayer, I'd like to see partial in-game XMB that lets you access your PSN friends list and send voice and text messages. All future first party titles should use the PSN tag in-game, with third parties having the option. I'd also like to see in game voice chat be a Sony regulated mandatory for all future games first and third party.

Locally, those who choose can have their system name displayed over Ad-Hoc. Others in range can send them a chat invite, which the use will see as a pop up. The two can then text/voice chat, use a Picto Chat meets Microsoft Paint rip off, or send pictures from their memory stick.

PIRACY:

The root of piracy is the use of custom firmware. If Sony gives gamers the cool features that are only available through CFW, they have less reason to use it. Also, if you give gamers more PS1 titles, they have less reasons to use CFW to play them. Less CFW means a lower chance people will pirate games.

For hardware, you need to have a hardware revision twice a year that makes the PSP harder to hack. If CFW becomes riskier to use, less people will try it, thus leading to less chances for piracy. These new hardware revisions should also come with the most recent firmware, which should also make it harder to hack.

If you present all these things to third parties, and promis lower piracy rates, while at the same time helping to push their games into the mainstream, more publishers will sign on, make more games, and better ones at that.

UMD:

The world isn't ready for digital distribution. The PSP, and it's predecessor are going to need a retail presence and a disc format for games. Starting with production, making the cases sturdier, and them cheaper to make for publishers, then that will take out one of the draw backs of the format.

As for the the battery life that using UMDs takes, you just need to put out good battery alternatives. Put out a battery the same size as the current one with twice the capacity for an affordable price, and that helps alleviate the battery consumptions issues. It doesn't fix them completely, but that's what the PSP 2 is for.

Though you also need to use the download space. After a game has been out for a year minimum, ask the publisher if they want it on the PS Store for $10-$20, but no more. Most first party games should make it here. This gives games a second life, an alternative to battery issues with UMD, and downloads for the smaller group who likes them.

Finally, we come to UMD movies. Here's how to fix 'em: Put up dispensers at airports and public places that give just the movie on UMD, in a very small cheap case for $5. Then at traditional retail, put the full box, with as much as you can fit on the UMD, for $10. Though as an alternative, you always have the PS Store (now available through Wi-Fi), for rentals and purchases that work on both the PSP and PS3.

CONCLUSION

Bottom line, if Sony follows my plan here, they will without a doubt finish the PSPs life span well on past the release of it's predecessor. The people are happy, they buy more, Sony makes more, they support it more, publishers make more games, they buy more, Sony makes more, the cycle goes on. And it'll be a happy fairy tale ending. Well maybe.... >_>

Xbox 360:

On the 360 side I've been getting back into Halo 3 after Bungie's recent announcement of a serious update coming this September. A few nights this week I've been staying up late playing a bit of matchmaking and a bunch of custom games. I've been having a load of fun with that, and hopefully they announce the next map pack at PAX. Looking forward to that.

I've was playing the music games earlier this week as well. On the Rock Band side, I've been going through all the songs on Hard drums to find out which ones I can play and which ones I really enjoy. I can complete almost all of them, but I just find some of they to be really annoying with the double bass notes which put a real strain on my leg. I've also been doing a little bit of band free play and some Band World Tour stuff for the hell of it.

I've also been playing some Guitar Hero III on an achievement hunt. I played through the Easy career on lefty mode to get that achievement, and I flipped back to righty to get some extra money so I can earn and unlock the characters, which is yet another achievement. I know, it's pretty lame of me, but hey, it kills free time during my summer and get's me some points.

Playstation 3:

On the PS3 side I've been flipping around a little bit. After the trophy patch came out for Uncharted, I finished up with that. I was able to do everything except complete the game on Crushing (the hardest difficulty), which is just damn impossible. So I guess I'll be stuck with 78% of the trophies, and no Platinum trophy. *Insert frowney face* Regardless, I've had had a good time going back through the game.

After a month or two break, I've jumped back and finally completed Metal Gear Solid 4. I got stuck towards the end of Act 4, and I just took a bit of a break in frustration. That "bit of a break" turned into quite a long time. It was late one night, and I finished Act 4, got through Act 5, and watching the incredible conclusion. That is quite an amazing experience. There were a couple of rough spots in the gameplay and the level design choices towards the end (see: why I couldn't give the game a 10), but I have NEVER been so emotionally attached to a set of characters before. I got choked up so many times I can't even begin to tell you. And I yelled out loud in a futile attempt to try and save a character from their eminent death. It. Was. Incredible.

Aside from my also starting my second playthrough on MGS4, I've also been playing some of the downloadable stuff. I gave both PixelJunk Eden and PixelJunk Monsters a second try. I got a couple of spectra in Eden, but I could not get any farther in Monsters. I really, really think both games need an easy mode. They're such great games, but they are too damn hard. They really turn away potential customers by doing that. Regardless, I still had a good time giving both a try.

Other:

On the TV side, the Mets completely dominated this week. They lost the third game to the Marlins on Sunday, but they ended up taking two out of three in the series. They had a pretty crushing defeat on Monday with a makeup game against the Pirates (thank you bullpen), but they really bounced back. They swept the Nationals, outscoring them 25 to 6 in the three games. Then the took the first two from the Pirates, with dominating performances by the starting pitching, and the bullpen pulling it together. I could not be happier with how their playing right now. Lets go Mets!

The power went out in my area on Thursday, and without much to do, I picked up my PSP and played a few songs on Beats. It's surprising how fun that game actually is. Hopefully Sony reveals a couple of PSP games at Leipzig for this holiday, since things got kinda dry after finishing Chains of Olympus and Patapon. LocoRoco 2 should be hitting this holiday, and we got Resistance: Retribution and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep for next year.

Also, I watched the unrated extended edition of American Gangster on Sunday (3 hour movie holy ****!), and it was really, really good. It was similar to The Kingdom (which I saw the week before) in the way that there wasn't an incredible amount of action, but it was a really, really great movie. Denzel Washington and Russell Crow were just lights out, and the supporting cast was great.
