I was surfing through some of the unions today and ones that I might have joined haven't been active for months, although some of the boards have posts I'dcall them inactive or DEAD. Gamespot should filter these out into a separate category so you know if you join there will actually be stuff posted, and updates on the union's topic.

As of right now I am a member of 4 unions(a recruit in all of them). Although in some I only post on the boards. My favorite unions are GTA Legends Union, and The Movie Palace.
