I'm almost finished with a 10 page research paper for my Liability and Ethics for the Criminal Justicd Professional class. I had to present an ethical arguement, state the facts for each side of the arguement, and then voice my opinion about which side of the arguement I chose and why. I'm putting this on my blog because I would like to see what everyone else's position about this issue is. I'm going to shorten it considerably but the important information will still be there.

The Animal Welfare Position:

  • We can use animals to benefit ourselves.
  • Using animals is morally right.
  • We should treat animals as humanely as possible and not cause them 'unnecessary' pain.
  • We can buy, sell, hunt and eat animals, etc, especially if we judge the benefit to ourselves outweighs the harm to animals.
  • Only humans have real interests and that these interests are always more important than animals.
  • We should improve but not radically change our treatment of animals.
  • We can measure animal welfare objectively and scientifically, for instance we can count the number of chickens who prefer to live on a straw floorover awire mesh floor
  • The Animal Rights Position

  • We should not use animals as it is morally wrong to do so.
  • We should not inflict death or pain on animals - no matter how much we gain.
  • Animals have interests and we should not inevitably trump them with our own interests.
  • We should change our treatment of animals, even if it means a radical shift in our attitude to them and the way we use them.
  • We cannot measure animal rights objectively or scientifically; it is an ethical concept that is a subjective moral choice.
  • Please tell me what you think. This is just an opinion query.

I am personally an animal rights acrivist, but like you said, it's all opinions. I like the points that you took too... Good job

I have always been an animal rights advocate, but not a radical one. I mean, I think we should use animals for our own benefit, but giving them some benefits too, having a symbiosis. Harming animals, either just for "sport" or fun or for our benefit, it's terribly cruel and should be severely punished. Here in Spain we don't have a law against harming animals (because that would be bad for bullfighting and it moves a lot of money, despite being criticized by a lot of people), so even if you abandon your dog with the microchip that have your data as his owner, they can't penalize you! A lot of hunters hang their hunt dogs in a tree when they are "useless" so we try to ask the hunters to give them for adoption and as is very difficult to find them a home here in Spain, a lot of them are sent to Germany where they really appreciate those dogs as pets because of their excellent behavior.
