My first time playing a shooter on the pc for more than 2 hours was on Combat Arms.combat arms

While I could see some potential for fun, my computer couldn't handle the game that well. I had to put everything on lowest settings just so the lag would be bearable. But for some reason the sound would only work about a fourth of the time while I was playing...and playing a shooter muted isn't that fun at all obviously. Combat Arms lasted a week before uninstallment and I left pc shooters alone.

But then today I remembered a game called Soldier Front, another f2p shooter. I was in the mood, so I downloaded it despite an hour of waiting and registering at random sites just to download and play the darn thing. It worked to me surprise and I entered a game to instantly be hit with the same lag that plagued me on Combat Arms. The minute I took a few steps and got killed by some guy, I knew I wouldn't enjoy it. But I tried my hardest to grow to like pc shooters...ultimately getting turned off them even more. Soldier Front lasted about 2 hours on my comp before I uninstalled it and reflected on my time wasted playing it that could've went towards writing an essay.

Darn YOU! Now I'm still doing the essay as I procrastinate further typing this blog...

Umm the only good F2P FPS's out there are CrossFire, Sauerbraten and Operation 7. Soldier Front and Combat Arms are some of the worst arounds, I don't even see why you'd waste your time playing these IMO.

CounterStrike 1.4/Source, Day of Defeat Source, Call of Duty 4, BattleField 2, Team Fortress 2, Halo. Those are probably the best retail FPS's around if you ask me.

Thats the point, I don't see why I wasted my time playing them. I would try those other games but my comp. isn't great so I don't think they would be any smoother.

The thing keeping me from getting into pc shooters is I just do not feel comfortable with the mouse and kb setup for them. I have tried a lot and experimented with different kb layouts, but I just dont enjoy it.

First person shooters are great on the pc, it's just that your pc can't handle it. And I'll admit that FPS is harder using mouse + keyboard if you're new. BTW, CoD is the best FPS series out there, although you'll really need a decent pc to run it smoothly.

-woonsa, what would be the reason to get cod4 on pc than on ps3 or something though?

It all depends on your preference, if you prefer playing on mouse and keyboard, which I doubt get the PC version. Otherwise, get the PS3 version. Graphics is the same on all three platforms, all that counts is where you're comfortable at.
