I got some time with a classic today. I played some Metal Slug X.

Just reminded me how much I really love to play shoot em ups like these. Even if they are insanely difficult and it takes me forever to get past the first level. It's so satsfying. As much fun as it can be, it's also similiar to a different game that's also really really really hard and lots of fun.

Contra is the originator of impossible gameplay with tight controls. What can I say about Konami? Konami dictates a lot of what I play on video games, but I'm not a big fan of Contra. Other than its downright amazing victory song and "Konami Code", it just isn't as fun to me. What makes Metal Slug a superior series? Glad you asked!

Metal Slug has hostages to save. They are often tied to poles, or hanging from the ceiling, but it makes things more interesting. Save a hostage and you get items. Unlike Contra, straight up shooting at anything and everything. Running and gunning is okay, but Metal Slug makes you want to slow down and strategize what you want to do next. It's pacing works very well. Contra just runs too fast for my taste. Metal Slug is juuuuuust right.

Contra has no short term attacks. How are you going to handle those close up attacks? You can just hope that your gun can hit it. In Metal Slug, you can slice and dice with a knife and that is cool. Not only that, you can choose your fighter unlike Contra. Contra's main character just looks like he's been taking some things he shouldn't. It's too gritty, Metal Slug is comically great. I'm rambling, lol. That's what I think really. It's just that Contra is all shooting and nothing else and Metal Slug is more dodging and manveuring. Either way, they are great, and I just like Metal Slug more.

Have a blasting good weekend!

I haven't exactly spend a lot of time with Contra, but Metal Slug is a different story. I remember playing X over and over again on my PS1, but it never gets old. Like you said, it's comically great.
I have the Anthology on my PSP but haven't had a chance to complete everything yet. It has disappeared from my shelf, and I suspect my sister lent it to someone. ):

mufujifi - I hope you get your Metal Slug back from the abyss of somewhere that you do not know and I am glad you agree as well.

Yes!! Another trip down memory lane!!! I love both these games and I actually still have my old NES cartridge of Contra!!! I pull it out at least once a year to do some blasting!!! But when it comes to all out insanity, Metal Slug can't be beat!!! I played the games in the arcade. I bought the collection for the Wii and also did a review here on that collection. Metal Slug games are insanely hard and after all these years I have yet to beat one!!! Still, I love the little animations, cool prizes that you collect and the weapon selection is awesome!!! The boss fights are hard as hell!!!! Aggghh!!!! Metal Slug!!! Thanks for another stellar blog!!!

katamari - It took me forever to beat Metal Slug X. Thankfully I had a friend join me in that effort. It was a long hard battle, but we did it! I've got to get him to come down and help me finish the rest of the games of the series! I did have a NES copy of Contra, but I don't know where it is. I've got to find it, but I am pleased that my Metal Slug X still works like a charm!

I've played the Contra games until I couldn't see straight, but I've never messed with Metal Slug that much. Methinks I might have to remedy that situation a bit...

Heh and the hostages look like castaways from an island, and yet they may have a bazooka. Which makes you wonder how they're still hostages?

jollyroger78 - Yeah, Metal Slug and Contra are amazing together. If you love Contra, Metal Slug will blow you away also!

Yagr_Zero - My theory is that they don't know how to use the bazookas. And besides, they are hidden in their pants! How do you hide a bazooka in your pants?

I love Contra, such a great game.. Have you played Contra 4, for the DS? It's truly a masterpiece. I got the game last year, and I sometimes tend to play it nowadays. It's just so addicting!

tennis12master - I have heard about it and I want to pick it up. But lately, I've been playing Chrono Trigger for the DS! It's just as fun as the original on the SNES, so I've got to find me some Contra 4 too!
