It's been a while since my last post; however I have been busy with work and school, as well as finally getting deep into gaming. I must say I have played some really good games that some of you might like, and some that maybe you would think suck. So lets get into what games I have been playing and I will be going into the future games of 07 that will be huge hits.

I finally beat Marvel Ultimate Alliance for the 360 with my younger brothers and I must say it was a lot of fun. I hated the camera however, my love of super heroes let me to be way to forgiving. I am really looking forward to more games like this as I know that Sony and Ms will both be publishing hero type games in late 2008. I truly say if you have someone to team up with then this game is a must buy.

I was given 2 games from my friend, fear and Splinter cell DA for the 360. I have not had time to get deep into the game play as I have been preoccupied with beating GRAW 2. If you are looking at getting Graw 2, I would say rent it from game fly because I was not as impressed as I was with the first one.

Now the great games in order of importance....

Lost Planet. This was truly a fun, great looking game that Capcom has once again out done themselves. The story may not have been A+; however this was still a great experience that I highly recommend.

Crackdown. Ok I admit it; I only got it to get into the beta. Guilty as charged, however, what I found was a really good game that was just recently made great with 1 free download from Ms that truly adds so much more to the game. Must buy guys and I believe that you will enjoy it as much as I have.

Motorstorm. I am sooo desperate to not say anything negative about a game that I was dying to get day one. All I am going to say that this game was a big let down. This will teach me not to hype any game as I might not like the outcome if the game isn't everything I wanted it to be. I am not sure why Sony didn't have much more input into this game because if they had they would have made evolution go back to the drawing board. I enjoyed Resistance but since dec there hasn't been anything worth buying or renting for the ps3. I will go into more detail about Sony and the games that are need that MUST be great this year if they do not want to have an even worst PR crisis than what they already have.

MLB07, 360. Finally a great next gen baseball game. This has been the first sports games where I did not feel the need to sim games throughout the season. Sure there are a few issues here and there, but this game is finally moving in the right direction.

Finally, the best game so far this year... Guitar Hero II for the 360. I have not had this much fun screwing up and trying to get better like never before. I will tell everyone, buy this game. I am hoping that they fix the pricing structure to these downloads over the summer, but other than that everything else was just fine.

So enough of the old and lets get down to the games that will make the remainder of this year sizzle.

Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles Wii (Nov 2007) I am a HUGE RE fan and this game is at the top of my list. And frankly it is the only game I am 100% sure I will buy for the wii this year. I am sure Capcom will make this one of the best spin offs in quite a while, and possibly a good hold over until the big dog hits next year.

Bioshock: 360 (Aug 21) This will be an AAA titles and a Must buy that will be yet another showcase for the 360. All of the clips and interviews look like this will be the game that will kick start this falls mega game releases.

Mass Effect: 360 (Sept/Nov?) Yet another AAA title that will be a great epic sci-fi action RPG. The only thing I am not sure about is when the game will be released. I have a hard time believe that the game will come out in Sept when the biggest game of the year comes out the same month so I am leaning toward Nov, which will be great for this title to take advantage of black Friday as well as the remainder of the Christmas season.

Halo 3: (Sept 25th) I will be finishing the fight alone with a few million others as this game will be the biggest game of the year (possibly might have to share with....

Grand Theft Auto IV: 360/PS3 (Oct 16th) Another AAA title that will be out for both the ps3 as well as the 360. This game will be huge for both and will move systems for both over the remainder of the holidays.

Heavenly Sword: Ps3 (winter) Everything is looking like this will be the ps3's 2nd AAA titles and finally looks like a game that will be a complete showcase. If this game is marketed correctly, this will help Sony move systems alone with...

Lair: Ps3 (winter) This game also looks like another AAA title and possible will appeal to a wider audience that any other game that will be available to the ps3 outside of Grand Theft Auto (MGS will not be released this year. I am sure we will not see it released until Q1 of 200.

These are the top of the line list of AAA titles that will be released this year. There are a few other good titles that will be available that I did not list and I am not sure if I will buy or not. More than likely my gamefly account will be working overtime this fall and winter for these titles that are questionable.

The end of this year will come down to Nintendo and MS as they fight to the death for the #1 spot. Nintendo will use it's cheap price point to get millions of consumers to get their console. They do have a couple other titles that will sell, but the price will be the major factor pushing the Wii's sells toward the end of the year. As for MS, they will have the games that will blow everyone out of the water. It isn't the cheapest console on the market, but the games will push a few million consoles as well.

Sony is another story altogether. I am not sure how they will fair towards the end of the year. Honestly I just don't know. That price point is a major factor that might just be too much for the average consumer to get over when they want to buy multiple gifts instead of just 1 gift for their family and friends. They have some AAA titles and if MGS would come out this year, then possibly they could sell at least 2 million over the holidays. However, MGS more than likely will not be released this year and it could be an uphill battle for Sony. All things considered, for us gamers we are looking at a great 2007.

It depends on what type of gamer the industry is selling to in 2007. What should Microsoft do for casual gamers this year? What about the die-hard Playstation 2 owners who don't want to spend $642.00 ($600.00 plus 7% sales tax in New Jersey) even though backwards-compatibility and stellar games are promised? What next-gen console is satisfying enough for a gamer to put next to their Wii? About the handheld market - has the Playstation Portable's resurgence, lower price point and quality software come as too little, too late? And finally, how will third-party deveopers be able to compete for recognition against Nintendo's own first and second-party efforts?

These questions need to be answered by the industry before the end of the fiscal year to ensure that each console manufacturer refines their positions in today's market. From what I'm seeing right now, Nintendo's catering to casual gamers and the "halo effect" of the DS Lite has helped them regain marketshare that had been lost for at least seven years, Microsoft has successfully built on the foundations they laid with the original Xbox with a slimmer console, streamlined online gaming and a reasonable price tag. Sony has yet to find their own identity as they had previously appealed to both casual and hardcore gamers but now it seems to be for hardcore gamers and technogeeks (I mean that in a good way) only, yet the Xbox 360 caters to them as well, with many software exclusives coming out.

Hey,

First off I got you beat on the sales tax. Here in Seattle our tax is 8.9%. Beat that!

Seriously, I agree with you about the casual market. Frankly I am not sure J what games will be assessable to casuals on the PS3 or the 360. When looking at titles I think that MS has some 3rd party games that will appeal to them. This gets us back to 3rd party dev’s actually making games that will sell to the mass market.

So lets look at some “casual” titles this holiday and I’ll you decide.

Guitar Hero III: 360/Ps3/Wii/PS2 (winter 07) this game will be a major seller across all platforms. Here’s the possibly bad thing. People will still buy the ps2 this holiday simply because they will be able to get it for $129 and they will be able to find some good titles to go alone with it. This doesn’t help Sony at all as most people will more than likely get GHIII for the ps2 and Wii due to cost over the ps3 version.

Looney Tunes: Acme Arsenal: 360/Wii/PS2 (Fall 2007) this is the type of game that appeals to the mass market. Trust my little brother is a huge Looney tune fan and can’t wait for it to come out. He also is the same guy that wants yet another Sonic game so whatever.

The Simpsons: Wii/Ps2/360/Ps3/PSP/DS (Nov 2007) this game will sell well across all platforms, though I wouldn’t be surprised that the Wii and the DS versions sell better than everywhere else.

These are just a few titles that will be casual friendly, there are also Madden which will be the biggest selling game of 08 across all platforms. As for the PSP, I am not too sure if it is too late for them. For whatever reason, Nintendo did a great job in marketing that DS to casuals while Sony did a horrible job in marketing the PSP. The PSP has some good titles and could be a viable contender, however the DS looks like it is the IPod for gaming and I don’t see it losing that title this time around.

As to your question as to what next-gen console is satisfying enough to put next to your wii? I am not sure if I have the answer to that one. It will all come down to what consumers think is the best overall deals for them. Price will come into play as well as the library of games will also come into play. Finally, how will 3rd party developers compete for recognition against Nintendo’s own 1st and 2nd party efforts? I think whatever studio wants to take some market share away from Nintendo’s own; they will have to have some over the top, fun, exciting unique game that is also very easy and accessible to play. Will it happen? Yes, the question is who will be the one that will do it? I will be looking to GHIII as the 1st 3rd party game that will be a huge seller on the Wii

Looking at the titles you listed, let's hope that there will be a decent market for the Looney Tunes and Simpsons' titles and hope that they aren't the ordinary filler games that dot gaming lineups. As for Guitar Hero III, they really need to iron out the wrinkles of their pricing structure as far as downloadable content, seeing as how gamers are protesting the current pricing/delivery structure of the song packs. There's also the question of how you would accurately define a "casual gamer" if they own an Xbox 360 or PS3.

Off-topic: I'll note that this blog has produced one of the best conversations in terms of quality.

I am hoping that the Simpsons game is actually good. I wouldn't say that out loud since the past games they have made wasn't worth mentioning. As for the pricing structure of the game packs... I sometimes wonder if people complain just to do so. Yeah I agree that the songs should be sold individual but from there what would you charge per song? I know some people want to have the same pricing as I-tunes. Well since the game not only adds the song, it also includes the animation for each of those songs, that pricing wouldn't make any since. So I think you would be looking at a $1.99 price per download and to make it interesting, sell a pack of 5 songs for 8.99. Yes you only save a dollar, but at least it would appear that if you bundle you would get your moneys worth. As for how you would define a casual gamer if they own a 360 or a Ps3? I would think if you own a Ps3 at this point and time you are a hardcore gamer. Meaning price isn't a barrier for you getting the system that will provide the best gaming opportunities for you. Even the 360 right now is more geared to hardcore simply due to the pricing structure. We all know that most consoles sells do not increase until they reach the $249 pricing structure. Both of those consoles have a little ways to go before that can be achieved. That's why the Wii is so popular, the pricing is literally right. Gaming selection is a whole different issue, however they did get the pricing correct right from the get go.
