Alright, Jude may have opened up a big can of worms when he listed all of the RPGs he's completed. Randy followed with his own impressive list and naturally that got me to thinking how many haveI done in the past 20 years? I'm sure there will be some that I'll forget about but here's an attempt at it. Some of these are debatable as to their RPG status (Zelda andDeus Exfor example) but I'lll go ahead and list anything that can at least be considered RPG material.

(NES)

Bard's Tale
Crystalis
Dragon Warrior
Dragon Warrior 2
Dragon Warrior 3
Dragon Warrior 4
Final Fantasy
Shadowgate
Ultima: Exodus
Ultima: Quest of the Avatar
Legend of Zelda
Zelda 2

(SNES)

7th Saga
Breath of Fire
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
Illusion of Gaia
Lufia
Lufia 2
Paladin's Quest
Robotrek
Zelda: A Link to the Past

(PC)

Baldur's Gate & Tales of the Sword Coast expansion
Baldur's Gate 2
Deus Ex
Diablo
Diablo 2
Dungeon Siege
Elder Scrolls: Morrowind
Final Fantasy VII
Icewind Dale
Knights of the Old Republic
Neverwinter Nights
Planescape: Torment
System Shock 2
Vampire: The Masquerade -Redemption

(PS1) - As you can seeI was pretty much just playing PC games during this era

Final Fantasy IX

(GC) - There would have been a lot more on this list if the Cube had a decent amount of RPGs!

Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance
Baten Kaitos
Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

(PS2)

Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits
Dragon Quest VIII
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Grandia 2
Radiata Stories
Rogue Galaxy
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Shadow Hearts: FTNW
Suikoden 3
Xenosaga
Xenosaga 2
Y's: The Ark of Napishtim

(Xbox)

Jade Empire

(Xbox 360)

Blue Dragon
Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Shivering Isles expansion
Enchanted Arms
Eternal Sonata
Fable 2
Fallout 3 plus Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt DLC's
Infinite Undiscovery
Mass Effect
Rise of the Argonauts
Tales of Vesperia

Finally, a few thatI never finished - Fable for the Xbox, Suikoden 4, Valkyria Profile 2and Grandia 3 for the PS2, Tales of Symphonia for the GCand Lost Odyssey and Star Ocean for the 360. For one reason or another these games just lost my interest at some point and there were other gamesI wanted to play so these were never completed Well, I think that covers it but I bet there's a few that I've forgotten about. Just don't want to thionk about what this comes to in total hours

Great list! However, you missed some good RPGs in the PS1 era! considering an RPG being played for 25-over 100 hours you put a lot of time into these games
Posted Jul 17, 2009 10:09 am PT
Didn't know you played that many Dragon Warriors game! Like Randy, your lack of activity during the psone era depresses me! You guys' lists are tainted by PC RPGs. So I am still King when it comes to console/JRPGs.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 10:13 am PT
10 ahead of me. I salute you, sir!

@ Jude: That's because PC RPG's are lightyears better than PS1 era RPG's. There I said it. It's true and no debate can change it!

that is just epic. I don't know what else to say. I have some catching up in the RPG dept that is for sure. do you remember way back in the C64 days a text based game called Zork? It was kind of an action adventure - RPG type game with trolls, elves, dungeons and such. I used to stay up all night playing that as a kid.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:07 am PT
@mattsn22 - Thanks, and yeah I did miss out some PS1 classics. Scary to think how many months of my life have gone into playing RPGs!

@Lightfellower - Yep, back in the NES days before Final Fantasy came along the Dragon Warrior games ruled! I do have to say that in the 90's I found most PC games to be far superior to PS1 games so you can still be king of console RPGs

@3kingdomsRandy - At least you and I know that PS1 RPGs just weren't in the same league as the PC ones. I'll never forget the first time I played Baldur's Gate - just amazing!

@phoenyx9 - LOL, yeah, as Comic Book guy said when he saw a nuclear missle/meteor (I can't remember) heading towards him "Oh, I've wasted my life". Anyways, I remeber the game Zork but never had a C64 or even a PC until the mid 90's so I never played it, though I know it had quite the following.

great list and taste in games! dave, what are your favorite rpgs for the 360? I have no games for my 360 so i'd like to know which games you liked so i can like them too
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:37 am PT
WOW! Here is my list:

Fallout 3
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:40 am PT
lol, I don't even want to mention how many hours I spent practicing all these scales in different keys on my guitar. the life of a jazz guitar player. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do, ~ Ti, La, Sol, Fa, Mi, Re, Do. is a mantra to me. remember "The Sound of Music"? I had to sing Bach chorals every morning with those syllables. At 8 am no less. I think I would have enjoyed playing RPG's or reading comics more. lol.

Even my nickname "phee" is a name I got in college, it is actually a Solfeggio note ~ Fi. It's a half step above Fa.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:46 am PT
@xriceballx - thanks, and as far as favorite RPGs for the 360 - I'd say Tales of Vesperia is my favorite JRPG and Mass Effect is my favorite western RPG. Personally I really like the Oblivion and Fallout games but I think some people are turned off by them because the main stories aren't all that special and some get overwhelmed by the total freedom you have to do w/e you choose. But if we're also talking favorite overall games I'd have to include games like Bioshock and Dead Space as well.

@Gen_Warbuff - LOL, well, at least that's a good one!

@phoenyx9 - Hmm, somehow devoting a big portion of one's life to playing the guitar seems more impressive than devoting it to playing videogames Main thing i remember about the Sound of Music was that Penny Robinson from Lost in Space was in it! Oh yeah, and I remember Chevy Chase singing it in "European Vacation"

Congrats on the RPG accomplishments! I've moved away from the genre in recent years, my new favorite being action-adventure (God of War, Uncharted, etc). I see Final Fantasy XIII and DragonQuest IX being my triumphant return to the genre.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:57 am PT
this list puts me to shame. i think i've beaten somewhere around 10 rpgs.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:57 am PT
Wow that's a lot ... I seem to have this disease where I can't actually finish an RPG (Final Fantasy VII, Golden Sun, Mario & Luigi, etc). My list would be nothing compared to this
Posted Jul 17, 2009 12:00 pm PT
I wouldn't feel like it was a waste of time if I could only remember half of what I forgot. (damn this lyme disease!) these days I'm lucky if I remember where I put my coffee cup. lol.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 12:28 pm PT
ya the total hours concept came to mind while reading this haha! i think most of us around here have the multi-70+hr. playthroughs on an rpg or two. (guilty on FFVII, FFT, and WoW!)

i gotta friggin finish mass effect! agh i lovehate that game. just wanna see the end. hear its awesome.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 12:41 pm PT
The only RPGS game that I ever played was Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12. About four on the xbox 360, I mostly go for FPS, Action and adventure games. It' takes me a long time to finish RPGS game .
Posted Jul 17, 2009 1:14 pm PT
@TheCarl - I go back and forth, sometimes will go several months w/o playing RPGs if I don't see anything interesting. The God of War games are definitely among my all-time favorites.

@thrubeingcool13 - Well, this has taken me about 20 years

@Phantom5800 - I've had quite a few i couldn't finish as well, either they got too difficult or just too boring

@phoenyx9 - Hey i can't remember anything either, and i don't have anything to blame it on The only things i can remember are useless trivia, like sports stats or songs from the 80's!

@Nokoryous - Yes, Mass Effect is an awesome game, really looking forward to the next one!

@hintaki - I hear ya. I'm also into FPS and action games as well. Sometimes you like to be able to finish a game in less than 40+ hours!
Posted Jul 17, 2009 1:29 pm PT
That's quite a list. I've played nearly all of the WRPGs you mention, plus some (Icewind Dale and lots of Ultimas, notably). I didn't know they made Bard's Tale for Nintendo. I played that on PC a long time ago. God, that was a frustrating game.

Why do people write it "Panescape: Torment"? No one feels the need to write "The Forgotten Realms: Baldur's Gate."
Posted Jul 17, 2009 1:38 pm PT
Wow so many RPGs, so much timed killed. *Phew* I wonder how much time I've used playing RPGs, I'm assuming at least one whole year, but that's just a guesstimate. I seriously hope I'm wrong though. If I may make a recommendation, you should try playing Persona 3 and 4 for the PS2, those two games gave me a much broader outlook on how RPGs should be.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 2:34 pm PT
I beat yet another list. =O

Another one that neglected the PS1, huh? I don't think I can associate with you and Randy anymore. I'm going to lock the two of you in the bottom level of the dungeon. >_>
Posted Jul 17, 2009 8:01 pm PT
Great list here! But where is Secret of Mana for the snes?!!? IMO the best game ever, if you have the chance you should check out that one!
My personal faves of this list are Mass effect (can't wait for part 2!!) and KOTOR, and each Zelda game is of course a classic.
Posted Jul 17, 2009 11:26 pm PT
That looks like a list of good times right there
Posted Jul 18, 2009 8:46 am PT
Impressive list, I have only played a few of those, FFX was my first RPG which is also my all time fav game. This gen has been slow for me in JRPGs, i loved Valkyria though.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 8:59 am PT
Nice list! Grandia 3 isn't really worth finishing. Even the awesome battle system becomes a chore when you get to the final dungeon.
Posted Jul 18, 2009 10:08 am PT
You have me beat as well Dave!
Posted Jul 18, 2009 10:37 am PT
I understand not finishing Suikoden 4 ... but Tales of Symphonia too?
Posted Jul 18, 2009 3:02 pm PT
Wow, that's an impressive list with some great games on it. I just wish I started earlier with playing RPGs, I missed so many of them when they were released. At that time, I was playing shooters, action/adventure (like Tomb Raider for the PS) or strategy games (Warcraft, Command &Conquer). I've got a lot of catching up to do. But I'm just a rookie what RPGs concerns
Posted Jul 19, 2009 5:09 am PT
Shadow Gate! That is one of my favorite NES games of all time. I'm trying to get the PC version to work on my laptop. No luck. That's a huge list btw. And I thought I played a lot of RPG's in my time.
Posted Jul 19, 2009 11:39 am PT
*pulls out template AGAIN* Nice list. XD

I remember Shadowgate! Why didn't you finish Fable?
Posted Jul 19, 2009 6:41 pm PT
@Palantas - Bard's Tale was pretty frustrating on the NES as well! IDK, it's just one of those things where I always feel the need to say the whole title of Planescape: Torment

@pspitus - I've heard a lot of good things about the Persona games, maybe eventually give them a shot the next time my 360 dies.

@KenshinGirl - I gotta say during the PS1 days the PC gave such a better presentation that I had no interest in Sony and unfortunately I did miss out on a bunch of classics. Oh well, at least Randy and I can talk about the good old PC days when we're locked in the dungeon

@Bazza28 - I can't remember the details as to why I was never able to grab a copy of Secret of Mana, I do remember wanting to get it. Yes, ME2 is one of my most anticipated games!

@N8A - Yes, arguably wasted hours but definitely fun!

@BigBoss712 - No question FFX is an alltime great one. If I had a PS3 I'd definitely give Valkyria a shot, have heard good things about it.
Posted Jul 21, 2009 6:07 am PT
@weltall1028 - Glad to hear I didn't miss much when it came to Grandia 3. Too bad as it had potential.

@AzelKosMos - Next on my list, your 360 achievments!

@tu2pac - yeah, Suikoden 4 really dragged. ToS was a fun game until I was in some kind of tower full of transporters, and I just got so confused I gave up

@tinoshke - the good thing is that there's a bunch of great RPGs out there for you if you don't mind going back to the old systems

@RoslindaleOne - Yeah, Shadowgate was pretty unique in its day and it's one of those games that would still be fun to play today if you could get it to work. Actually seems like the kind of game that would be good for the DS. If the Atari had been capable of running RPGs the list would have been longer, and of course this doesn't count the ridiculous amount of hours I wasted playing D & D when I was in college
Posted Jul 21, 2009 6:15 am PT
@SavoyPrime - Shadowgate was a fun game, would like to play that one again. IDK why the original Fable didn't keep my interest. Of course I finished Fable 2 and was able to experience that AWESOME ending (insert sarcasm)
Posted Jul 21, 2009 6:17 am PT
I have plenty of old RPGs for the PC, PS and PS2, just one problem : finding the time to play them amidst all the other games (next gen) I'm playing right now. I already have a back log for the next gen consoles, don't remind me too much of the one I have for the older consoles
Posted Jul 21, 2009 7:26 am PT
Yeah Dave, the ending for Fable II was indeed "awesome". XD

I had forgotten about Shadowgate until you had mentioned it.
Posted Jul 21, 2009 7:48 am PT
I almost forgot, finish the XenoSaga series. The third one is by far the best ... if you can remember what's going ... once the secrets start being split you'll be on the edge of your seat.
Posted Jul 21, 2009 9:58 am PT
How can you not have played Fallout and Fallout 2 when you got Planescape and Baldurs Gate on there!? Shame on you Sir!
Posted Jul 25, 2009 7:02 am PT
Some of them are great! I love Final Fantasy
Posted Jul 25, 2009 9:09 am PT
Wow you really are a serious gamer, hope when i get old i still play games like you.
Posted Jul 25, 2009 11:38 am PT
No PS1 RPG's come u missed the golden age of RPG's and most of them were on the PS1 and PS2 but alot of great ones were on the PS1 tell me you have played FFVII at least lol
But great list none the less
Posted Jul 25, 2009 5:39 pm PT
No Super Mario RPG?
Posted Jul 26, 2009 8:38 am PT
@Spotty_Bug - I know, for some reason I never picked up those games way back when so I missed out on some RGP goodness

@Gamespot_Crew - Thanks, and yeah, if you're into RPGs then Final Fantasy games will almost surely be listed!

@victormgs777 - Yeah it is quite a few games, and with the way games are now I don't think as many people will "grow out of them" because the games are so much deeper and mature now, even for an "old" gamer like me

@NuKkU - Doh! How did I miss FF7? Actually I played the PC port as I didn't have a PS1.

@Garrison_Ford - Actually there was a time I thought about playing it, back when I only had a Cube. But, then I got a PS2 and the Cube was pretty much forgotten!
Posted Jul 27, 2009 10:21 am PT
oh okay that makes sense okay ur forgiven
Posted Jul 27, 2009 10:25 am PT
So that's the greatest RPGs? You played all those games! i don't think so
Posted Jul 27, 2009 10:31 am PT
@Gamespot_Crew - You don't think I've played all these games? You have to keep in mind I started playing 20 years ago so it's not that big a deal when you spread it out over that long a period of time.
Posted Jul 27, 2009 11:35 am PT
Sorry mister. that's great. 20 years is a very long time, actually, I'm not older than 20
Posted Jul 27, 2009 12:00 pm PT
If I really think about it, I'm pretty sure I've only finished about 4-5 RPGs in my life. Usually Aaron and I would be playing them at the same time and he would finish before me. I usually lost interest at that point. Bummer, I should have finished them anyway.
Posted Aug 3, 2009 7:51 am PT
I believe I played almost as many (-7 yours), but drop the 16-bit generation. I started with N64, Dreamcast second, and regressed to 32-bit and played any of them beginning in 2000 starting with either Grandia II or Skies of Arcadia with the exception of Diablo '96 in 1998 over 56k on 1996 era rig. Good idea Celtic, I'll list mine on my blog. Babafett trainer was so fun in 1998.
Posted Aug 17, 2009 7:45 am PT
Impressive. You are hardcore my friend. I've not been much on RPGs so my list is a lot smaller. In fact Mass Effect and Fable II might be the only ones I've actually finished.
Posted Aug 27, 2009 8:30 am PT
wow, awesome experience!
Posted Oct 25, 2009 2:15 pm PT
Awesome, have you checked out Evolution on GC? It was originally for DC but both were released on the GC as a bundle.
