With less than two months to release, I am damn excited that Tekken 6 is almost here. I've been waiting for this freakin' game for the past two years and it's been excruciating. Yeah, I'm lucky enough to have the game in arcades here where I live, but it's also the tons of home stuff like story modes, CG endings and all the cool extras Namco throws in that's making me giddy. All that and I've already replaced my first HDTV with a bigger one just for this game.
That said, I am positively perplexed at all the idiocy that seems to be permeating forums and game sites- so many idiots are talking crap about Tekken 6, and I just feel I have to set the record straight. This is Tekken 6 for idiots and noobs, so those who know better just bear with me. "Tekken 6? It looks just like Tekken 5!"
No, moron. That's just your memory glossing over. When you were a snot-nosed kid barely out of your diapers you played T5, and granted, it was nice. The PS3 HD-upgraded version of Dark Resurrection wasn't too bad either. However, Tekken 6 ramps up the graphics totally. Though the designers kept the default look of the characters from T5 (since Tekken 6 happens just shortly after the last tournament), the new character models exhibit far more detail, look far more solid and lifelike, and move at a solid 60 FPS. Don't judge this game from the low-res Youtube cam vids... if you see this on a HD monitor, it's gonna blow you away. Either that or your standard of graphics are really weird.
"Tekken is just a button masher's game."
Nope. Tekken, and especially Tekken 6 now, is as deep and technique-heavy as any fighter out there- that includes Virtua Fighter 5 and 5R. Yes, it can be played simply by anyone who can move the joystick and press some buttons- but that just demonstrates how accessible this game is. Yeah, you can get by with a few moves against some low-level CPU AI or other noobs... but against an expert or very competent player? No chance in hell. You've got to incorporate everything from combos, launchers, juggles, sidestepping, ground games/okizemi, counters, throw-escapes effectively to be competent. Controls are tight like Nina William's ass. Yeah, this game is easy to pick up... but to master it will take lotsa practice. But man, does it feel good to own people in this game and know you earned it.
"40 Characters? Most of them play the same anyway."
No, that's SFIV. Aside from just three characters (two female versions of a base fighter and the mimic, Mokujin), the rest of the roster (that's about 37?) have unique movesets, skills, combos, techniques, strengths and weaknesses. The game has been balanced and tweaked so no single fighter really has overwhelming power (as was the case with the newcomers in Tekken 6.0). You've got all these fighters to know and master, and everyone's awesome. Well, I really hate Bob but he's still pretty impressive.
"What's with that Final Fight game? The graphics SUCK!"
Okay, the Scenario Campaign's graphics aren't up to the same standards as the main game, but it's a bonus mode, dude. It's an extra thrown in because the devs are cool guys. What Scenario lacks in pure graphic punch it makes up for in content. What it is is the return of Tekken Force mode, which came all the way from Tekken 3. It's a nice little side mode where you can just cut loose with your fave characters and kick ass outside the regular arena and context. All that plus there's more story in the mode, with real-time cutscenes and the ability to earn money and customizations for the rest of the game. Who knows... it may be pretty fun.
Tekken 6 has been NUMBER 1 in Japanese arcades since the start of the year... and it's STILL number 1 to this day. The gameplay ROCKS, and if you're a fighting gamer, you'll love this game to pieces. I've been playing it since 2007, and I still can't get enough. Namco-Bandai has always had amazing home ports of this series, and the Tekken 6 console versions look to surpass everything they've done yet. 40+ characters to play with, TONS of customizations to tweak and fiddle with, oodles of home stuff... and it's online-capable. I expect no less than awesomeness- we've waited for this game long enough.
If Gamespot doesn't give this game a 10 or a 9++, I'll be horrified. Can't freakin' wait.
