Man, what can I say about the movie version of The Da Vinci Code? Sadly, the first and only thing that comes to mind is that it does not do the book justice. Before I put the DVD in my player, I wanted to put aside the unfavorable reviews from other users of the site and from the various critics to make my own opinion of what I saw on the screen. And unfortunately I guess my opinion is the same as the critics.

The movie starts out well enough on the dramatic side with Silas chasing after the Louvres curator in attempt to locate the information that is important to the Teacher. I also liked a little bit the way we are introduced to Robert at the beginning when he begins his presentation. However, even though I liked that part, it is where the discrepancies with the movie compared to novel start. When Lt. Collet meets with him at his book signing and begins asking his questions about the meeting with Sauniere. What I found odd about his questions was that in the novel Langdon and Sauniere were supposed to meet after his seminar, not before.

Another thing that I did not like a lot about the movie was the way things progressed while inside the Louvre when Robert arrived. It seemed to be rushed along so fast with his arrival and Sophie making her appearance almost immediately after Captain Fache began his questioning. The same can be said about how fast Langdon and Sophie cracked the codes left for them by Sauniere.

An additional plot point that I found horrible was the way Langdon was portrayed in the movie. Why in the world change him into a skeptic regarding the Holy Grail when Sir Teabing was telling Sophie about it? What a horrible way to change the key character of the book and movie. The same can be said about the ending. Why have only one cryptex instead of the two that where in the novel? And why have Sophie not be the granddaughter of Sauniere?

Ultimately, the liberties the writers of the screenplay took in writing their version of the Da Vinci Code made the movie mediocre at best. While I enjoyed the acting of Ian McKellen and even Tom Hanks, the job they did was not enough to make the movie a respectable version of Dan Browns novel.
