I have been catching up with the show "Rome" on DVD. HBO spent $100 million making this series, and it really shows in the set pieces and costumes. One thing about the show that I really like is that it never turns away from the utter brutality of the times. The sex is pretty graphic, the violence is absolutely unnerving, and the crimson flows like water. The story is just another notch in it's belt, so to speak.
I was really caught off-guard by the fact that the show manages to be a very dramatic retelling of history, even if it's not completely accurate. These people and their actions totally reflect the modern times we live in, and the way they snake their way out of troubles only to find a new barrier to cross is one of the many reasons you should be watching this show right now.
On another note, you should also watch Sarah Silverman's stand-up DVD called "Jesus is Magic". In my opinion, not only is Sarah Silverman a beautiful genius, but she makes the idea of racism even more outlandish by throwing it right in your face during every joke she tells. NO ONE is safe. When I say NO ONE, I absolutely mean it. But hey, if you can't laugh at a joke that is told for the sole purpose of proving how idiotic racism actually is, then can you laugh at anything at all? She's like a one-woman version of South Park, but ten times more extreme.
So, look for these covers in your local rental store, and don't think twice about taking them home:

Comments
God-awful. This movie is part stand-up, part musical, and part acting. Thank God it's only a painful 72 minutes long. Silverman goes on through out the stand-up sections commenting on how "edgy" she is if edgy means talking smack about AIDS and black people. Oh, and your sex-life involving boyfriend, Jimmy Kimmel way too many times--vomit. The musical sections were garbage, random, poorly written and sung by Silverman. I'd have to say my favorite parts were the closing vocal trio of Sarah, her vagina and her ass singing "Amazing Grace" (sarcasim). But Bob Odenkirk's scene as the manager was hilarious and in the extras Silvermans segment from The Aristocrats. Overall, I was really disappointed, but after listening to the commentary I found some redeeming qualities, but not that redeeming to say:
It was 72 minutes of my life I wish I could take back.
That Rome show looks pretty freaking sweet, though. Makes me wish I had HBO. Then again, I'll always have movies like Snakes on a Plane to entertain me instead. I saw it earlier tonight, and that was THE greatest movie I've ever seen. It's got comedy, action, suspense, and even romance (in the airplane bathroom!). You've gotta see it dude. Like, ASAP. Unless you already have, and it that case, see it again! I know I am.
Chevolutionary
Never heard of Sarah Silverman but it sounds like my type of comedy, I might check that out.
