Whoa, whoa... slow down there... really? Seriously?

Well, yeah.

I've recently posted a blog about my new-found admiration for Sony's approach to console gaming. Over the years, ever since the days of Nintendo 64 and the first Playstation, I've been a very gradual convert from Nintendo fanboy/Sony hater to a growing fan of Sony. I don't hate Nintendo now or anything, but I just never play my Wii. The thing is... I've realized recently that ever since I picked up my PS3, I haven't bought a single Xbox 360 game. In fact, I've realized that I literally haven't turned on my Xbox 360 since. I keep looking at my dormant gamercard and the only activity it ever shows is "seen recently on xbox.com." 4 of the 5 game icons I didn't even play. Fallout 3 I play on my PC, Fable II was a gift for my ex-roomie, Oblivion ex-roomie again, and Def Jam: Icon was my friend playing while crashing at my place. The only game there that was me playing is Resident Evil 5, and that was months ago. Meanwhile, on the PS3, I've been logging hours on UFC Undisputed 2009, NHL 10, Uncharted, MGS4, Brutal Legend, Dead Space, Killzone 2, etc... and it's my DVD/Blu-ray movie player as well.

The thing is, I was at El Sarape last night with a handful of friends (ungodly awesome mexican food) and at some point we started talking about games for a little bit. I brought up the recent announcement that Netflix is coming to PS3 and they're still not charging for PSN. My friend Erich has shared a newfound admiration for the PS3 as he's been playing mine a lot, and he was planning on picking up his own as a personal Christmas present.

But then came the shocker: Just last night while we're eating dinner, he comes out of nowhere with "I think I'm just gonna sell my Xbox 360 and pick up a PS3 sooner than later." And my initial reaction was like ARE YOU CRAZY? WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? But then I started thinking... and thinking hard... I literally can't remember the last time I powered up my 360. I've recently gotten fairly heavily back into gaming (by my standards) and I've only been playing on my PS3 and PC. My 360 controllers are probably dead, now that I think about it. And then I kept thinking... why am I still paying for my Gold Xbox Live membership? I don't play Halo or Gears of War any more at all, and the games I like to play online like UFC, NHL, and Killzone are all on my PS3. And that doesn't cost me anything. I sold my PS3 fat to my friend when he moved out and I picked up a slim, and he decided that he doesn't need a 360 either. So why is my Xbox Live account still active? To delve even further, I'm hard up for cash lately trying to make up for some hasty purchases. So instead of asking "Why sell my 360??", it turned into "Why NOT sell my 360? Seriously?"

The one thing that immediately came to mind was Mass Effect 2, but that was quickly dismissed. The PC version of Mass Effect got better ratings than the console version. I was only going to get the 360 version because of the holdover of information from the first game, which I thought was neat. But that's it. Really, I'd probably be happier playing it on the PC. Then I thought about Dragon Age only to quickly remember that it was being released for the PS3 as well, and even has the same launch date now. Then I thought about Forza 3. That was the one I couldn't come up with an alternative for, except that eventually Gran Turismo 5 would come out for the PS3 to satisfy my racing game needs, even though it's probably going to be a long while. But it hit me that the only reason I could come up with to keep my 360 was Forza 3. That's it. My friends are gradually moving to the PS3 as their primary gaming platform, I've been there for basically this entire year myself (well, a combo of PS3 and PC), and I simply do not play my 360. It's funny, when I think about how my Wii has been generally gathering dust lately, I still play it a lot more than my 360.

When I couple these revelations with the general discomfort I get from the fact that Microsoft nickels and dimes at every chance they get (I will NEVER understand their prices for hard drives and wireless adapters), and the fact that companies like Sony are proving that you don't need to do that and consumers don't need to pay for it, I am quickly, quickly coming to the conclusion that I'm going to sell my Xbox 360. I could sure use the cash, and I sure don't use the console. I'm pretty sure I'll be perfectly content playing the games I have now, and tacking on MAG, God of War, and Uncharted 2. I've decided that I can live without Halo and Forza. After all, apparently I've been doing it all along and I didn't even notice.

UPDATE: Just saw the announcement for Brutal Legend multiplayer DLC content. Pretty lame content but the point remains: it comes out on Nov. 5th for $5, but the PS3 gets it for free until Nov. 19th. Guess Microsoft felt that charging $50 a year for their online service wasn't enough to offer the same deal on Xbox 360.

You raise some good points and since you have a PC that is good enough to run Fallout 3 I'd say there isn't that much of a reason to hang on to your 360 at the moment. If you own a good PC the 360 only has a couple exclusive games worth playing and there is a good chance that even those will make that jump eventually. If I were in your place I'd kill my Live subscription but hang on to the machine anyway because you never know when something amazing might get released on it that isn't released on PC as well. First example that comes to mind is Fable 2. I loved Fable: The Lost Chapters when I played it on my PC, the only reason I haven't played Fable 2 is because it's only available for 360. You get the idea.

Sell the 360 and buy a PS3!

Well, because the 360 is currently my main gaming platform, my first instinct is to tell you to keep it. Especially since usually, key word: usually, people wish they hadn't sold system x or game x. However, I can see exactly where you're coming from and it sounds like selling your 360 would work best for you. Be sure to let us know what you finally decide and don't forget to think it through 2 or 3 times! (like you weren't going to do that already)

I look to my 360 for the online/connected gaming experience which I have to say that Sony is absolutely light years behind Microsoft. I have a PS3 that I enjoy for the exclusives but utlimately I'm on my 360 90% of my gaming time because of Xbox Live, achievements but let's not forget the 360 games that never make it to PS3 like Gears, Halo, Fable, Left 4 Dead, Mass Effect, etc...

When I first saw the title of this post, I was going to say exactly you aforementioned in the blog. Most X360 games you can play on the PC (as long as you have a good VGA, naturally), and the Windows versions always look much better, as you said about Mass Effect. PS3 has some nice unique games, so if you want to diversify, you are in the right direction. I'm not saying here which gaming system is the best, but the one that would suit better depending on the situation. From my point of view, owning a uber PC and a X360 seems a little redundant, so I guess your decision is the correct one.

@dark_orb Yeah see I've always been a PC gamer first, so I feel obligated to keep my PC up to snuff to play games like Crysis, and it can generally handle anything I throw at it and look better than my 360 does to boot. My Live subscription will be the first to go, like you said, and I'll probably stall a little and see if my 360 ever enters back into the conversation. If it doesn't, out the window it goes. Heck, maybe I'll wait until the Christmas rush and see if I can get something extra for it.

@ErkiB I don't need another one!!

@BradHummr Yeah the 360 was my main gaming platform for a while, but it's just disappeared from view... I'll definitely repost when I make a final decision.

@luc11044 See, I've played plenty of hours on Xbox Live and I've played plenty of hours on PSN. For me, at least, there was no difference. Playing Killzone 2 was just as lag-free and populated as Halo. There's never a shortage of bouts in UFC. That, plus since the system price has dropped, the population is growing quickly. And regardless, there's no better online community than what exists on PC, by leaps and bounds. And I liked Gears and Halo but could've done without them and I have Left 4 Dead and Mass Effect for PC. The first Fable made its way to PC and maybe the second will too but I haven't been too interested in them regardless. It's turned into the reverse situation for me... I only have my 360 for the exclusives but then found that there weren't really any that interested me anymore.

@ChristianKiss You're right, it's turned out that a good PC rig and an Xbox 360 has become redundant. Say what you want about Xbox Live, but it can't compare to the PC online gaming community. Haven't made up my mind completely, but I can't come up with any good reasons to keep it.

@bowlingotter - if you want to play online with strangers, the PSN network is as good as Xbox Live. However, if you want to play and talk with several friends even if you're not playing the same games, Xbox Live is the best option. I do agree that since many of the 360 games make it to pc, that having a 360 is perhpas redundant. I don't do gaming on pc so that's probably why I'm always on 360 because it probably offers the best overall package of games on any console. I have to say that PS3 has some killer games coming out with the new Ratchet & Clank, God of War Collection and the recently released Demon Souls.

@luc11044 Yeah, that's pretty much the biggest factor (the PC). If I didn't have a PC, there's no way I'd be getting rid of the 360. Just that as good as the 360's online experience is, it can't hold a candle to the PC's.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I can't see myself paying for an online gaming service like that.

@ebbderelict Exactly. I used to pay for Kali way back in the day when I played Descent II and the FIRST Warcraft game online. Those days should be long gone.

I am with you. I would much more prefer having all of my games and content stored on one machine. One is enough (well, plus PC).

ya having all 3 consoles you eventually favor one for some odd reason I still favor my 360 not that PS3 or Wii is a bad system...ok the Wii is lol but there is something about my 360 I just can't sell I want it and usually make it my default system when buying games

I play my PS3 more than my 360 to but I probably want sell it.
