Sony has been slowly but surely making a fan of me, and I was about as resistant as it gets.

Let's start at the good old original Playstation.

Playstation

Me: "So?? My Nintendo 64 is 64-bit! The menu for Mortal Kombat Trilogy looks cool! I have an analog stick on my system! So what if it uses CDs, the Nintendo 64 has no loading times!"

So I missed out on the original Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, and a number of other fantastic titles. I didn't even pretend to take notice. I was a blind Nintendo fanboy who laughed in the face of a new console coming around. Nevermind the fact that I had a freakin blast playing Mortal Kombat 3, X Games, and Resident Evil at my friend's house on his spanking new PS. NEVERMIND.

Then came the earth-shattering PS2:

playstation 2

Just like that, Sony blew us all away. Now you had a cutting edge system, loads of IPs that had just got their start on the original Playstation, TWO analog sticks, and a freakin dvd player. Everyone on the block had one. Grand Theft Auto everywhere. New Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid titles. And what did I get? The Gamecube. Hardly groundbreaking. I actually jumped ship and got the Xbox eventually, mostly due to Xbox live, and my unshaking resistance to admit that Sony was on to something big and had a real hold on the console market.

And then there was a glimmer of hope for the Sony resisters like myself:

ps3

The Playstation 3! Yes! Sony messed up! They released a console for WAY too much, and even got it out late! My Xbox 360 is already sitting in my entertainment center and kicking ass! And that pesky Cell processor that no one wants to code for! It's over, Sony, you screwed up! I got my Wii and I got my Xbox 360 and I'm laughing! I even get the better ports of multiplatform titles on my 360! But now, I survived the PS2's heyday, and they're so cheap now... so what the heck, I went back and bought a PS2 and picked up Final Fantasy X and XII and borrowed a few games from my buddy.

That is... until my 360's optical drive died. I'm handy enough, so I did a little research and replaced it myself. Good as new. That is... until I got the RROD. So I wrapped my console in towels a few times to squeeze some life out of it and eventually went out and bought the newer model with improved cooling. Ok, so it's all good now, just that by this time I've spent more than I would have on even the maximum-priced PS3, and I would've gotten a blu-ray player out of it.

That's still not what turned me... see, what eventually happened was I got a 1080p TV. And I wanted blu-ray. [sigh] Well, I have a bunch of Xbox games, tons of PC titles, a handful of Wii titles, a PS2, and all I'm missing is the PS3. I had some extra money saved up, so I went out and bought a used PS3. I got my blu-ray, and I figured, what the hey, I'll get a few exclusives that I haven't played yet. So, I picked up Little Big Planet, Resistance 2, and Metal Gear Solid 4. I only had to play these games for a short time when I found myself thinking... hm... uh, I really like this system. I like the OS. I like the controls. I love the free online play. And MGS4 is fantastic. Plus, my controller seems to last forever on a single charge. Very little recharging to do. So when a game that I had been excited about for so long finally came out (UFC Undisputed 2009), what did I do? I went to Gamestop and I came home with the PS3 version. Uh oh, what's happening?

Then the PS3 slim was released. A friend of mine had recently come over and decided himself that he was fascinated with the PS3 as well. So, I sold it to him and I went out and picked up a brand new PS3 slim. Now it looks pretty to boot. I went out and bought NHL 10, Brutal Legend, and reserved MW2, all the PS3 versions. I also picked up Uncharted and had a blast. I rented Killzone 2 from Gamefly and piled my queue with PS3 titles. I found myself caring about trophy collecting. I downloaded handfuls of demos from the Playstation Store. I proceeded to effortlessly convert another Xbox 360-owning friend into a PS3 fan and he is now purchasing one (I didn't have to say anything, he just came over and spent a little time with it).

See, all of this had made me a fan of the PS3, and now that it had become reasonably affordable, I wanted it to succeed. But it still didn't make me a Sony fan, persay, I just liked this console, and was truly happy that I had bought one. In fact, only in recent days have I started to become a true fan of Sony...

First, I posted a recent blog inquiring as to people's choices for GOTY up until now. When I went back and started reviewing the best releases of 2009, I started to find something... Xbox 360 had way more games, but in turn, way more mediocrity. It started to look like a quantity-over-quality situation. PS3 had less games available for it, but a lot of the best games of 2009 were PS3 exclusives. Uncharted 2, inFamous, and Demon's Souls jumped out at me, but I hadn't realized up until that point how many great games there were for the PS3. Of course, Xbox 360 had Mass Effect which has become one of my all-time-favorite games, but I'm a PC guy, and apparently the PC port was better regardless. Not a knock on the 360, but more to point out that I didn't need it to get what I wanted.

Beyond that, the finishing blow caught me completely off-guard... the Playstation 2. That's right. Look at the menu bar at the top of the Gamespot page... do you see the Xbox? How about the Gamecube? No, you don't. But you do see the PS2. And there are still new games coming out. Sony said early on that they planned to enjoy an extremely long life of the PS2 console and no one took them seriously. Well, they've sure kept their word. Now you can pick up a PS2 for $99 and still pick up brand new games for it.

You know what this tells me? Sony's serious. They're not kidding. When they say that the PS3 will have a 10-year life cycle, now I believe them. They've stuck by the PS2 faithful and continue to support them. Now, the PS3 is cheaper, more affordable, supports the new standard in media storage, has free online play, doubles as a blu-ray player, and has built-in WiFi and bluetooth. Cutting corners they are not. We also see the hardware sales shoot way up, and for the first time, the PS3 is on top of all consoles, save for the DS. Why is this? Well, obviously, the price cut has a whole lot to do with it. But I feel like the details will snowball from there... There are going to be people like me who never gave the system a chance, and once they do, they'll get hooked fast. Then, like me, they'll look back on what Sony has done and see that they're still sticking by the good old PS2 and aren't just abandoning it. They'll start to realize how many quality titles there are for the console. They'll notice the growing on-line community, and appreciate that it's free. They'll see that they're not being charged an arm and a leg for peripherals ($99 for a wireless adapter? Really MS?). And I think many people will come to the same conclusion that I am: the tide is turning, and everything is going Sony's way.

From day one, we've been hearing over and over again about Sony's superior hardware, and we have not seen any tangible evidence of that in the games. More often than not, the Xbox 360s ports have actually looked and performed better than their PS3 counterparts. However, the line is blurring, and at that trend, it may actually swing to Sony before all is said and done. It's been announced that the new Crytek engine has been released to developers. That gives them the ammunition to really push the limits of what this generation of consoles can handle. This is the window of opportunity that the PS3 needs to showcase its capabilities.

I've been as resistant as anyone to Sony's success, and even their superiority in a lot of areas. Ultimately, their unflagging dedication to the PS2 is what has turned me into a believer and a fan. They've proven that they're sticking around, and they're sticking with their consumer. They're not kidding around. Coupled with the quality of exclusive titles, Sony is poised to make a run in the current console war. Many thought it was over, and that the PS3 was dead last. It's not over, and we might just be coming up on halftime. It's looking like 2010 has the potential to be huge for Sony, and MS and Nintendo had better have some significant tricks up their sleeves if they plan to hold on. Sony has taken the slow, hard road, and has continued to do what it takes to build a loyal fanbase. They're doing it right, and I'm officially on board.

Good for you man. I also have a 360. I've played MGS4 on my friend's PS3 and that game was awesome. I played some Killzone 2 and Resistance 2. I might try to get a slim for Christmas. Hopefully I can come up with the money then.

Excellent blog. Very well written, and well balanced criticism. I agree with a lot of what you said, as you know that I'm a big PS2 fan myself.
I know that when I one day get a new system, it will be a PS3... or 4.... depends how long it is before I make the plunge But still, for all the things that you said, that is why I'll buy Sony again (at least in the game-console arena). I'm not putting down the 360 or the Wii. People have them and people love them, with good reason, but Sony hasn't given me a good enough reason to look elsewhere.

I'm with @ebbderelict that was a great piece of writing.
I really like my PS3. It's always my first choice over my 360 when it comes to playing any media, although it isn't always my first choice on multi platform games. The Xbox 360 always seems to have an edge over performance when something is made multi platform. I know this is because games are made for the Xbox and ported, but still.
Of course I know more people that play the 360, so I'm more inclined to pick up a multi player game there

@Beastcake @elk: Good points, and that's why I still have my 360. I'm definitely not selling it; it's still a fantastic console. I love the Netflix integration, and there are some exclusives that I'll still be playing.

@ebbderelict: I'm with you in that at this point, whatever Sony does next, I'll be watching, and chances are that I'll support them. I still have no reason to buy a PSP though. :-)

Thanks for the comments, and I'm glad you didn't see this is a 360 bashing blog, which it's not meant to be.

I honestly don't care about the PS3. The console's library of games just doesn't interest me at all.

That being said, I do want a PS1/PS2 quite badly at this point. I can definitly relate to you with Sony turning me over; after being a blind Nintendo fanboy, the PS1/PS2 has interested me quite a lot.

WOW, this was one huge and great blog post! Can't say much because, as you said above about yourself, I'm also a PC guy. My last console system was Mega Drive / SNES, then I decided to stick with the PC. This was a hard decision, but since my job and all my studies are PC-dependent, I guess it's the best choice for me.

However, as you said above, there're great PSX games that will never come up to the PC, not to mention that some ports will never be the same without a controller. It isn't fun to play Prince of Persia with keyboard and mouse, for instance.

To be honest, if I would buy a console, it would be the Wii. Seriously. I played it a few times and I simply loved it! As for the 360, it really doesn't appeal to me that much, even though all the games look awesome in this gaming platform.

good blog. i remember i was the only kid having a ps2 back in the day. good times

Enjoyable blog sir. I bought a ps1 back in the day namely because I loved the Final Fantasy series. I never owned an N64 namely because I only would have wanted a handful of titles for the system (namely Perfect Dark). Then the PS2 came out with full backwards compatibility with software and hardware. It was the first console to make ownership of the previous version 100% unnecessary. On top of that it was the first DVD player I ever owned. I loved that console to bits and I would still nominate it as the greatest gaming platform released to date.

I will admit that Sony has screwed up with the PS3 in a number of areas. Lack of backwards compatibility in current models and the prohibitive price point you mentioned are the first to come to mind. Even so it's still a hell of a console, it's stable, has free online play, and it's a blu-ray player to boot. To date I still have no interest in the 360 at all. Namely because 90% of the games I'd actually want to play on it I can get for my gaming PC. The original Xbox had the same problem which is why I skipped out on that console as well.

The only regret I have about Sony's monopoly on my gaming to date is my missing out on the Gamecube and it's library. It's the only console released in the past ten years that has actual exclusives that I'd want to play. Sadly most of those titles are now collectors items. Money I'd rather spend on tracking down great titles for PS 1 and 2.

I thought the ps3 was rubbish at first but it's really starting to take shape now

Interesting article, but at the end of the day Sony has lost the race and people these days aren't willing to throw their money away so they're not going to deliberately rip themselves off. Overall the Wii is the winner so congratulations to Nintendo!

@roleplayer2004: I used to be in the same boat as you, there. Then I realized that the console war has in fact not yet ended. I'll consider the Wii the winner if it actually lasts as long as the Xbox 360 and PS3, which I'm not sure that it will. In fact, the only company that people are screaming from the rooftops to release a new console is Nintendo. People want an HD Wii. If an HD Wii comes out and the Xbox 360 and PS3 are still going strong, then it looks like the original Wii actually couldn't survive.

@GamerJM: It actually sounds like you're well on your way down the same path I was. If you get a PS1/PS2 and you get a taste for some of those IPs, you're going to be a bit more interested in that library of PS3 games than you were before.

@ChristianKiss: Thanks! And to a fellow PC guy, I was very much in the "if I get one, it'll be a Wii" band before as well. Truth is, now that I have them all, the Wii gets FAR less play than any of the others, to my own surprise.

@dark_orb: Just another testament to Sony's approach. They've actually given you the option of going back and playing classic titles, unlike Nintendo that just cut off the Gamecube entirely.

@bowlingotter
My understanding is that the Wii is backwards compatible with 100% of the Gamecube library. It even opes up on top to take Gamecube controllers and memory cards. Sure they aren't making games for it anymore but it's better then Sony actually removing PS2 support from the the PS3. Even my 60Gb PS3 isn't perfect with older games.
Posted Oct 22, 2009 7:10 am PT
@dark_orb: This is true, and that is a feather in Nintendo's cap. But there's a difference between backwards compatibility on a new console and continuing the life cycle of the previous console. Either way you look at it, the Gamecube has been eliminated. The only advantage that backwards compatibility serves is to make sure that you only need to have your Wii hooked up to your TV and not both the Wii and Gamecube at the same time. It doesn't make it any easier to find Gamecube games. So in that regard, I personally would disagree that backwards compatibility is superior to the continued support and life cycle of the previous console.

Great blog, and its true, Sony has really delivered on its promise to deliver more value and great exclusives after its lackluster start. Looking at this year alone and its clear, Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, A Crack in Time, InFamous, Killzone 2, etc - Sony is really coming on its own with great games. And with the recent price cut, other consoles better take note and up the ante.

originally when I got my PS3 I didn't like it that well or the games I was a big xbox and xbox live guy but then I started to replay some games and I started to fall in love with it and with so many games coming out for the PS3 Im glad I got it..good read

Heck yeah!
Posted Oct 22, 2009 2:35 pm PT
Well, actually, I'm more interested in the stream of JRPGs/Rhythym games that are currently on those consoles more than the Sony IPs. Most of the IPs I wanted on those consoles moved elsewhere, which is why I got a 360. JRPGs are mainly on handhelds and rhythym games are now primarily mutiplatform games. Really, the only PS3 games that interest me right now are the Rachet and Clank games, Valkyra Chronciles, and MAYBE Heavenly Sword.

I liked all the systems until resently. Now in the 360/PS3 war, I favor the PS3. with exclusives aside, since some exclusive games can make any system worth getting, I hate that you have to pay to play online with friends with the 360, and PS3 is free, and PS3 has built in Blu-ray and the 360 has nothing. I love my Blu-Ray movies!
Now Microsoft is worried with the systems future due to lack of capasity for their media choice and how complex and size intensive the games are getting. I will not be dishing out hundreds to make the 360 be where it should have been to begin with.
And I am not a PS3 fan boy, or a 360 hater. I have both systems. Barely touch the 360. I do however prefer the playing on the PC.

"And I am not a PS3 fan boy, or a 360 hater. I have both systems. Barely touch the 360. I do however prefer the playing on the PC."

You just described me to a T in that last line as well. I'm definitely on the same page as you with your comment.
