Owww, I dropped a liter bottle full of water on my big toe. I was getting it off a shelf at the grocery store, so it fell from about 5.5 ft. My toe's not broken (thank God) but it's purple

Ouch! You gotta stop those heavy water experiments! 
If your nail is purple, you might lose the nail.
The worst was when my big toe nail was caught by a door opening suddenly and with force!
It lifted the nail up and it looked like a car with the hood up! Then came the PAIN!
