Sorry about all the blogs... I've never done so many so frequently! Anyway, It's my 19th birthday towards the end of this month and I've been tossing up what games to ask my parents to get me. I'm not really sure how much they're willing to spend, but probably not a lot. They never really spend a lot of money for birthdays. Here's the current games I'm tossing up:

- Nostalgia [DS]
- Love Plus [DS]
- A Witch's Tale [DS]
- Tales of VS. [PSP]
- Persona [PSP]
- PW: Project Witch [PSP]
- Fate/Unlimited Codes [PSP]
- Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure [DS]
- Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor [DS]
- Knights in the Nightmare [DS]
- Record of Agarest War [PS3]

As you can probably tell, I'm into JRPGs (for those of you who didn't know), Turn Based Strategies & anything with cute girls. I'm also confident enough with my Japanese to import. However, I come from Australia and not many games I actually like come out down here. As a result I often import from the US, but because of region codes I can only do that for my DS, PSP and PS3.

Can you guys recommend anything else for me to try or tell me if you've played any of the ones I've listed? Preferably something a bit more obscure that I may not have heard of before! Also, if any of you know what firmware versions any of the PSPs actually require to play, that would be useful too! Thanks!

@ FeltLyner - Yeah, I am a big 'Tales of' fan. However seen they are actually doing a US release of it, I'd rather wait for it in English.

Nice choices. Devil Survivor is great but really hard. I still wanna check out the original Persona (which I'm getting it in the mail, btw) and also Knights in the nightmare.

Have you tried Gurumin and/or Star Ocean on the PSP or Chrono Trigger, Advanced Wars: Dark Conflict, Blue Dragon Plus or TWEWY on the DS by any chance? If not, I can recommend those

@ Mattyrock - Tell me what Persona is like when you get it

As for your recommendations... I've already played all of them! Thanks though!

Will do!

I have Rhapsody and while I haven't played a lot of it, it's definitely a stand-out title (to me at least). Reminds me of Eternal Sonata because of how it's like a musical. But in terms of gameplay, I heard it's not much

Even though I didn't play Knights in the Nightmare, I know it has to be amazing. It's by Sting, so of course it is And that leads me to Riviera and Yggdra Union. If you don't have them, then those two are what I would recommend. They're on the GBA and PSP.

Fate/unlimited codes is a great fighting game. I believe the AI was toned down when the PSP version was released.

I recommend Devil Surivior (watch out its very hard towards the end)

Nightmare is a quality game, though it's very frenetic. It's an SRPG, and involves some heavy stylus manipulation in each and every battle. I found it fun and challenging, but ultimately it stressed me out!

Rhapsody is very cute, and funnish, but very lightweight and much too easy (and I like easy games).

Trying Persona for PSP today! I liked the PS1 version, but never finished it, and I'm looking forward to the revamped one. Gamespot harshed on it in their review, but they slammed it for being old school, which seems a little silly.

I'm anxious to see Witch's Tale and Nostalgia when they come out, though.

Oh, and Mana Khemia was pretty solid on the PSP, also...
Posted Oct 1, 2009 10:42 am PT
Well, if your firmware version is not high enough, the games will automatically make you update it, so it's not really a problem (unless you don't want to update)
I can say that Rhapsody isn't that great, the DS version I mean
I have Knights in the Nightmare but I'm not too crazy about it. Fate/Unlimited Codes is good (arrrrg no physical copy of the game), Devil Survivor was meh.
That's about it I know.
Tales of VS is unlikely to have a US release is my hunch. But the game interface is so ugly...

Oh and Persona is ok, not bad but nothing amazing.
I would recommend Tales of Hearts or Innocence but you don't import games all that much huh
Posted Oct 1, 2009 10:54 am PT
@ShadowVari - Thanks for the advice. I already have Yggdra and Riviera though

@ Swoosie - Thanks again for the advice! I had forgotten about Mana Kheima. I see some reviews are pretty average for it though. What did you think?

@cookie_on_fire - I have been importing more recently and already have Innocence and Hearts I'm running custom firmware and I currently can't play 5.55+ games because there isn't a custom update for them yet.

In that case, you may want to stay away from new releases for a while, since I think they are up around 6 by now.

Shin megami Tensei was supposed to be awesome.

Thats awesome that you cna import games. I always wondered what the Haruhi Suzumiya games were like, but they were never trnaslated. Maybe you could chekc those out?

@VXLbeast - I never really look at games based on anime or manga. Much like movie games, they never really seem to be all that good. I enjoyed Haruhi, but I'm not a fanatic.

Mana Khemia takes a little while to get rolling, but once it does it's a solid JRPG (my review: http://www.gamespot.com/psp/rpg/manakhemiaportableplus/player_review.html?id=655641 )

You've probably already played Avalon Code (decent DS JRPG), and ChronoTrigger (awesome DS JRPG port)?
Posted Oct 2, 2009 4:23 am PT
@Swoosie - I'll have a look at your review and give it another look then.

I have played Chrono Trigger, but not Avalon Code. Again, I've seen some rather low reviews for it. What did you think?
Posted Oct 2, 2009 5:23 am PT
Avalon Code was another 8.0 for me -- well done and a solid game, just not stellar. Why can't they all be The World Ends With You?

barkerao:

Ah, yah, that makes sense.
Posted Oct 2, 2009 1:58 pm PT
@Swoosie - Haha, so true. Well, I'll have another look at Avalon Code too. Thanks!

Tales of VS
Fate/Unlimited Codes
Persona
Posted Oct 2, 2009 6:21 pm PT
That's pretty good list. Any one of those you get should be a good choice. I had no idea we were born in the same year.
Posted Oct 2, 2009 8:58 pm PT
@ soulless4now - What a coincidence!
