Just finished Timeshift. Despite tepid reviews, I still want to check it out just to see the nifty time mechanics. I don't usually mind derivative shooters.

Meh.

It was ok for a bit, but the time mechanics aren't enough to really recommend it due to the rest of the problems. Sometimes when driving vehicles you just die from hitting some random piece of geometry. Other times the game says "Haha. Now that that environmental hazard killed you, you will know that you need to use your time powers when you reload the last check point". Sometimes the suit tells you that something is about to happen, but until you know what it can be pretty hard to avoid these things happening. Enemies can hit you from a billion yards away, and in some firefights it is almost mandatory to use your time powers to survive, and if you happen to run out of juice at the wrong time it probably means game over. I have no idea what the story was about. I jumped back in time to chase some other dude or something, I began helping some random people who didn't seem to care too much that I came from the future, and looked like an overgrown can of sardines, and I shot people when my cursor turned red when I aimed at them. There was a flashback of some woman every now and again. I have no idea why. And then the game ends on an anti-climax. I finished the game, but I thought about giving up a few times. On the plus side, shooting people in the face with a shotgun in slo-mo never gets old.

So there is my short review, I haven't been in the mood to write full reviews lately, I might eventually write one for Eternal Sonata. I'd score Timeshift a 6.0. It had some neat ideas, but they don't save it from paling in comparison to other great shooters of this generation.

I seem to try and play shooters between other games, I think there is just something about shooters that seems to work for me, even if they are mediocre ones like Timeshift. But I'm out of options in the collection. Metroid Prime Gamecube; I'd rather wait til I have the Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii to play with those controls. Medal of Honor Airborne; tried playing that a couple of times and just get frustrated. Army of Two; have started playing this on co-op so I think I will leave that for when my mate comes over so we can continue on that one together. I can't really justify buying any games at the moment when I have a number of games unplayed or uncompleted in the collection. I'm sure I can do without a shooter for a while, though I do need to finish up Fallout 3, so that should scratch that itch, though it's not quite the same.

So what's next? *peruses collection*

Prince of Persia, I choose you.

I thought Time shift was ok. I could have used a couple of months more polish, and I'm in the same boat as far as the story goes. I really wasn't sure what happened. But yeah, it really is kind of weak when you stack it against other titles in the genre.

Prince of Persia was a great game for me, until the end. Now I despise it. So very much. It rubbed me wrong just like Fable 2 did...just isn't right I tell ya.

You should play Darkest of Days next

@johnsteed7

I thought that game looked promising, based on the trailers. It has a strange yet cool and fairly original concept for a shooter (You are a member of a time-traveling organization that must go back into the past to correct anomalies, using a mix of period and futuristic guns) but, based on the demo, the game is pulled down by terrible AI, stuttering framerates, and just plain unsatisfying gameplay.

Anyway, I never had any real anticipation for TimeShift. The demo pretty much proved my original opinion: That it is just another bland, mediocre shooter trying to make by with some sort of gimmick.

I tried playing Prince of Persia a couple of times but just couldn't get into it. Fallout 3 was great but I can see that it just doesn't measure up to a shooter.

@Foolz3h
Yes, it did. Perhaps I will wait another year or so to get Trilogy, just like the last suggestion

@EarthThatWas
I finished it despite its shortcomings, so it was ok. But what was up with the ending. It just seemed to end so abruptly.

@MsCortana
Played for about half hour to an hour last night, I enjoyed it though I don't quite understand the combat yet. I've heard that the ending is a bit of a downer...

@johnsteed7
I saw the review the other day, I didn't even know about the game until then. I read the first paragraph, skimmed the rest and that was enough information for me to say no. I still wouldn't mind tying Blacksite 51 though, another shooter that got mediocre ratings. I didn't mind the demo.

@raven28256
Is that really an original concept? While I can't cite specific examples, I thought it had been done a few times before.

@Mjoanne
I just can't play Fallout 3 like a shooter, the game isn't really built to be played like that. Great game though.

@payne6705
It depends. If you like shooters and have played the 'top tier' ones and need something else to play, them it isn't terrible. Just flawed.

I had never heard of that game.

Yay for Prince of Persia! I still need to get Warrior Within and Two Thrones to complete the last gen trilogy. I loved Sands of Time!

prime 3 could be considered a shooter, but the first two are really more action-adventure. bosses contain some cool fire-fights though.

If it has been used in other games then I can't name any specific examples either. Now I do remember an old cartoon named Time Squad that used the same basic concept (Minus the violence, gore, swearing, and using the concept for comedy as opposed to drama) but I can't think of any other games that tried it.

I often find myself playing games that got mediocre ratings and loving them, and sometimes they seem worse than the review. Finding the gem once in a while is typically worth taking all of the chances though.

I've been playing Prince of Persia lately, it's pretty good. I'm digging the art style and platforming but it does get a bit boring at times.

@MsCortana: What was so bad about the ending that made you change your mind? And about Fable 2?
Posted Sep 24, 2009 8:51 am PT
If it's PoP PS3 edition (Or Xbox360), I thought it was great if a little short. It was everything I wanted Mirror's Edge to be, but without me having to be in any way talented at it.

I also like FPS alot... but have never played Timeshift. I am so very sorry to hear it was not that great for you. I will check it out but from what you have said probably stay away from it for sure!

@Pierst179
I nver finished... whichever one it was that was re-released under a different name for the Wii, Rival Swords I think. It was good, but a boss battle towards the end frustrated me to the point that I put it down without finishing it... the fact that you had to redo the chariot sequence before it if you failed was the clincher, very annoying.

@just_nonplussed
I've heard the 3rd is a little more action than the exploration than the first two. I have played the Gamecube version of MP1, but put it down and when I heard that it was being remade with new controls I figure I'd wait and replay it from beginning.

@raven28256
Pretty sure it has been, but not necessarily just for FPS, or possibly with as much story depth as may be in Dark Siders (which I don't know much about except for skimming the review). I think in the previous hazy memories I have the time travel aspect was more an excuse to vary up the level/enemy design than a fleshed out storyline.

@tprezzy12
I put dozens of hours into Kingdom Under Fire : Circle of Doom which scored a 6 on Gamespot and pretty similar scores elsewhere. I wouldn't really rate it any higher myself, but *I* enjoy it more than I would actually rate it. At the time thought there weren't many action-RPG's to choose from this generation, and I still think the genre is a bit lacking. Maybe I just need to look harder.

@polsci1503
It's more the combat that gets a little lengthy at times. And I'm not sure what dodge is for, I haven't been able to dodge an attack yet. (Block yes, but not evade) I enjoy the traversal aspect a lot more, and trying to figure out the path to that light seed you can see in the distance.

@Joker_Wylde
Based on what I've been able to complete so far in 3 or 4 play sessions of probably an hour or so each, I think I'm about half way through. So it doesn't seem too long, but I wouldn't want it to overstay it's welcome either.

@Sandpiper121PP
As mentioned in a post above, Timeshift isn't terrible, just flawed. In my blog I have of course focused on all the bad aspects, but at its core it's still a shooter and it's hard to get the main mechanics terribly wrong.
