At this point, even I'm tired of saying how it's been awhile since my last blog post, so I won't bother with that anymore. Nobody's perfect, especially me. Which brings me to my topic.
When I popped onto GameSpot today, I figured I'd just do a bit of browsing. For the past week I've been playing Assassin's Creed for PC (fantastic!), and today I beat the story mode, so I needed something to do. Seeing as Grand Theft Auto IV was in my state paper a few days ago, I decided to look at GameSpot's review and see what they gave it.
Imagine my surprise when- no, let me rephrase that. Imagine my shock and brush with Cardiac Arrest when I saw that GS gave it A WHOPPING 10/10! A PERFECT SCORE!!!!!!! HOLY TOLEDO, THEY HAVEN'T GIVEN ONE OF THOSE OUT SINCE THPS3!!!!!!!!!!!! After my pulse returned to normal, I read through the review, and for the most part saw that GS got it right. For the most part.
See, GameSpot has (in my eyes) been the Simon Cowell of video game critics. These are the folks who realize that nothing a human makes can ever be perfect (how can an imperfect thing create a perfect thing?), and humanity can do nothing but forever chase perfection, aspire to be better and better but never be the best that it can, for there is always room for improvement. Look at their reviews!!!!! Only 4 times until now had they ever given out perfect 10s, and EVEN THEN they STILL MANAGED TO FIND FLAWS!
They found flaws with GTA IV, too. AI bugs, the repetitive car bug, and flickery shadows may be nitpicky problems, but they are still THERE. No game is perfect. Nothing we make is ever perfect, and despite this 10/10 GS still recognizes this. I just think that if nothing is perfect why go back on this? Why not 9.5?
GTA IV is, whatever I may say, remarkable in at least 1 way: it is the FIRST GAME EVER to be released on multiple platforms and acquire a perfect 10 on each and every one of those platforms from GS. Heck, it made the front page of at least one newspaper, and they talked about it on the radio. If nothing else, Rockstar has publicity (for better or for worse, as the hot coffee scandal and Manhunt 2 incident have both shown us).
I confess that even I am predisposed towards GTA IV. Just a day or two ago (May 1st if you read this after a long while) I said to a friend that "GTA IV isn't intellectually deteriorating. It's an art form." Someone is bound to say "Hell yeah!" and someone is also bound to say "bullshaz." Just bear in mind that this is the first good thing I've ever said about any Rockstar game.
Predisposed as I may be, Grand Theft Auto IV is not perfect. Neither was Ocarina of Time. Neither was Soul Calibur. Neither was Chrono Cross. Neither was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3. But they all came pretty damn close.

In any case, life just seems easier to live when we have fun with imperfect things...
