Well Mondays always get me down. Not usually rainy days. The Carpenters (or rather Paul Williams & Roger Nichols who actually wrote the song) are on their own for that one. But the title fit for today because I'm tired and it's raining. And I just like the Carpenters.

However, I did not bring an umbrella to work today. I rarely ever bring an umbrella anywhere. This isn't because I don't have an umbrella...we have more umbrellas than members of our immediate and surrounding family. This isn't because I don't realize how adorable someone looks carrying an umbrella; it reminds me of Mary Poppins.

And this isn't because the umbrellas I have don't work, I even repaired one myself which had broken due to being flipped inside out during a strong wind. I had to rewire it, and normally I wouldn't give so much care to fixing an old umbrella but it was so beautiful, with Monet's "Water Lilies" printed on the top, so I couldn't just throw it out.

Anyway I don't carry an umbrella because I really don't see the point. First of all, it's another thing to carry (who wants more of that?) unless you get one of those smashing hands-free umbrellas that make you look like a circus performer or a hydrophobe.

No offense to the zany guy and girl shown here who just happened to come up in my search for circus umbrella hat pictures.

And when you finally get it inside whatever destination you intended to reach, all you have is a soggy plastic thing to continue carrying, or leave sitting around in hopes that it dries without people stepping on it, tripping over it, kicking it off the designated "umbrella-drying" area, etc.

Second, it rarely protects you from that much water. Wind blows, water drips down from the edges...either way you're gonna get a little wet. Toss in the fact that getting in and out of your car or building doorways requires it to be closed to fit, and without going to extreme difficulty to protect yourself from the water, you end up getting wet during that time anyway.

And lastly, it's just water! Unless you're the wicked witch of the west, you're not going to melt, your not going to get hurt, and as I said you're not going to get that much wetter than if you carried one. Maybe that's why she wore that wide-brimmed seemingly water-resistant hat, hmm?

I don't mind getting a little wet, and even if it's pouring rain and I get soaked, I'll live. The only downside to rainy weather is that my hair poufs, but that's not going to change with the use of an umbrella. But during my 10 minute walk up to the building I work in, I spotted all sorts of umbrella carriers and it was barely drizzling! Seems to me unnecessary. I think even in flood-like rains, the only thing I'd use my umbrella for would be a floatation device.

Anyway that aside, I'm very sleepy lately, physically and mentally and emotionally, and that leaves me with little inspiration for a blog. So this will have to do.

Side note, as a few may have noticed, I now have a video uploaded on here. On another website we were talking about our singing voices so I decided to record mine, and for one friend, the only format her computer could handle was a video on youtube, so I just added a nice visual to look at and put em together and viola! Ari in a box. Enjoy.

"YOU'RE so supreme!" What a lovely, LOVELY singinging voice you have! Sweetest of the sweets! Thank you so much for sharing it with us! I know I'll play your video time and again!

The umbrella blog was right up my alley, too. I'd like one of those Mary Poppins ones, just to save on gas, alone. I'm a rainy day lover, too. I'd take a rainy day over a sunny any old time. And, I never take an umbrella with me-- they look so lonely when someone leaves them behind. "The Homeless Umbrella"-- sounds like another blog in the making.

Ari, I sat down with the "Complete Lyrics of Ira Gershwin" and discovered you are singing the first sheet music version of the song, as opposed to the lyrics that were actually sung in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1936. The words I am most familiar with are from the 1953 "female version." There is also a "duet version" Ira wrote for a Bing Crosby/Rosemary Clooney album in 1958. And I've heard versions that mix couplets from all four published sets.

Nice blog. I wear a hooded raincoat, so I don't carry an umbrella. I took one to England with me, just because it seems like one should, you know? Thanks for uploading your song. That was great.

Hey, Gramps (tdalec), no complements in that big bag of yours??? The girl just sang her sweet, little heart out for you. Don't you have anything to say to that? You never cease to amaze me, Gramps! One never knows what your cup will runneth over with-- today, it must be the "dismiss." Once, again, Ari-- BRAVO!!! ***claps till her hands sting happily***

I'd say I was tortured with being forced to listen to The Carptenters whenever I was younger...but I actually kind of like them.

Sparkle, I had already heard her singing that song and had complemented her to the point of inducing diabetes.

Rain hates me so in return i hate it! you have a good voice!

Sparkle: Thanks! You're making me blush!
You're right about those sad little umbrellas in the stand by the door...begging for love as you leave them behind. Heh, maybe they prefer to stay dry though.
Yes not only would Mary Poppins' umbrella allow you to fly, but it's a friend to talk to on the journey there!
And a second comment! Just to yell at Gramps for me. Thank you. But yes despite the fact that he's lying through his teeth about his reaction to my singing, he has "listenened to it before." Sadly he can't enjoy just how fabulous it is due to his hearing impairment. Thanks for watching out for me.

tdalec: Thank you for the research on the song, though all I had to know was that I sang it as best I could and I love that song.
I think you grossly misrepresent the "praise" you gave me for the singing though. Inducing diabetes? I would hardly call what you gave me a compliment.

IMom: Yes I suppose if in England, one needs one, as Bekki can probably agree with. I saw you were the comment on my video! Thank you!

Nickel: You, me, and Garfield.

FuFu: Thanks for the confession...though I don't think it's anything to be that ashamed of.

Bekki: Thank you, and yes I'm sure if I experienced the rain you do, I wouldn't be so pleased with it. Maybe if you had the Mary Poppins' umbrella...

Emilia: Thanks! I should print that out and color it...yes I'm 19 and I'm not ashamed to admit...I still love to color.

You know, Ari, I discovered that I have a CD of Bobby Short singing the actual lyrics from the original 1936 show. And since I can only hear pitch and lyrics and only when I hook-up my $5K technology, and since I did that hook-up and then said that you didn't go off pitch and that I found the lyrics you sang to the word.... What the he|| more do you want me to say?

I'm very much sick of the rain here in MA.
Too much of it and my dad insists we walk in it... I like rain, but walking in it for a few hours it annoying.
I even took a college tour in the rain.

I own about 3049832489234 of those hats. Would you like one? I'll even throw in a nice matching, lime green fanny pack.

Dashing.

I can't listen to your song right now... my uncle is going deaf and didn't bother to set up the sound on this computer.

Tdalec: I love Bobby Short, though I've never heard that version. As for what you have to say about my singing, I want you to say nothing more, especially if it's not nice. Oh yeah, don't curse on my blog, old man.

Rayc: OOOh all the way in Boston and you still take a moment to visit my blog...I KNEW YOU LOVED ME!
A few hours in the rain does sound excessive...and sniffle-causing. Did you enjoy the college tour otherwise though?
Oh yeah an umbrella hat and a lime green fanny pack...I'll be the talk of the lab. You send that along as soon as I get your GG soundtrack.
It's cool, you can listen to it later, as I'm sure you will.

I hate Monday, but rain isn't that bad. I agree on the umbrella thing, it's just pointless. I never use one, if I am to have something on, it's just a sweatshirt with a hood. My hair poofs too. As I have said before, excellent voice!

I'm not in Boston anymore... I'm back at the Cape.
The hotel had a computer lab but it cost 5$ for 15 minutes... my parents were not willing to let me do it.

Ooh, how do you put your video inside your blog?
Posted Jul 23, 2007 9:25 pm PT
Stacy: Hoodies are what I wear too...ironically I never put up the hood. Thanks for blopping by!

Rayc: Right I forgot, sorry. Yes your parents are right, that is highway robbery and you can't indulge that kind of blantant rip-off, no matter how bored you are.

iMom: Right above comments on your video there are options on what to do with it, one of em says "Blog It." Click that and get the code for inserting it into your blog, or just say "Start" and it'll be in the blank blog area that opens up.

Thanks. Next time I come up with a video I'll try that.
