Concept:
Railroad Tycoon is a business strategy games. You have been put in shoe of a Railroad company. Now you have to make the company proud. Lay rails and setup stations, buy engines and run those between stations to haul goods as well as passengers and mails. Eventually you'll earn money. But this isn't an easy job. There are engine failures, there are train robbers, there are cunning opponents too! So you have to be quick or be dead in the race to becoming a railroad tycoon.
What's inside the game:
You will start with a company and some money. At first lay rails and setup stations. Then buy engines to haul trains between stations to earn money. When you gather more money, you expand your rail empire. Also you can improve your stations with variety of buildings. Some of them can increase revenue, some will decrease accidents and engine breakdowns. Also as time passes by you will see change in goods prices, increase / decrease in infrastructural costs, some establishments will stop accepting raw materials and will take processed goods only. Factories will need to be supplied with raw materials and supplementary materials to produce goods at full rate. Cities around the stations will grow in size and it can grow up to 3 times than original size. This game also has share market at full pace. You can buy shares of your/other companies. Other AI players can do the same - so keep an eye on your shareholding chart. You may be thrown out of the window at any moment.
Conclusion:
This is one of the greatest business strategy games so far. Though many more railroad themed tycoon games has been released after this, but in my opinion this game is so far the best railroad (perhaps any transportation) based tycoon game. Gamer who loves to play business strategy games should look no further and try their hands on Railroad Tycoon II. The platinum edition offers both the original and expansion in one pack and the long campaign will itself holds you in front of your PC for a long time.
