On Friday, I'm heading out on vacation. I'm flying to Seattle, and taking a train hitting up Mt. Rainer National Park, the Cascades, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and various little towns for a little over a week.

At least, that WAS the plan. Today, the company operating the train announced that effective immediately, they're bankrupt and are stopping all services.

Yes, less than three days before I leave.

So now I have a plane ticket to Seattle and one from Wyoming that aren't refundable, with nothing planned in between and just two days to figure something out. Oh, and a couple thousand dollars that a company cannot pay me back (and that's why, kids, I pay for pretty much everything on my credit card). Yeah, I think I'll be busy these next two days.

Rent a car and drive it, man. The same thing happened to us this spring. We were flying to Hawaii, but a few weeks before we were set to leave, the airline went belly up. So, we got our money back and basically picked a spot to land on by throwing a dart on a map. It landed on Tennessee, and off to Tennessee we went. We landed, rented a car with a gps, and hit the open road, finding lodging at B&B's by the seat of our pants. We went all the way through Tennessee and into Kentucky doing this.

And it was one of the best trips I'd ever taken.

Actually Blackley, that seems to be what we're about to do. Two nights near Seattle, two near Glacier, and four in Jackson Hole. Problem is finding a decent place to stay on short notice, but I'm sure we can find something at the very least - my parents are coming too, and my mom can be particular about the quality of the places we stay on a major trip. I'm off to AAA to pick up some TourBooks the first thing in the morning.

If you end up in Boise you should let me know. I know a great place with some of the best pizza and beer you will ever have.

Stay at B&B's, man. I've got a killer book of five star B&B's located all over the country -- shoot me a PM if you want any referrals from it.

I think we're looking more for lodges, but B&B's could work too. Heading out now to get the books. And Rag, we're just nipping through the panhandle of Idaho.
