The place where unusual love for movies and tv-shows is normal.
Sunday, Nov 15, 2009
This week we heard that ABC can't get enough from reviving old TV-shows by saying they want to bring back CHARLIE'S ANGELS to the small screen, unfortunately, America proved they aren't that into the 80s anymore by not turning up for V's second installment. Fox put Whedon fans out of their mystery by doing what everybody espected and canceling DOLLHOUSE. ABC put down EASTWICK and HANK, but nobody really minded except for the first show's creator. The CW prepares for a TV movie event for SMALLVILLE, certainly making it easier for VERONICA MARS fans to hate them even more for not giving the movie they so desperately want (and deserve), meanwhile THE VAMPIRE DIARIES brings a home to REUNION and LAWKI victim Sean Faris. With all this stuff going on behind screens, you can olny imagine what happened onscreen now the Sweeps are well and going! Check it out here....

Best Quotes:
Nathan: 'I think I'm in trouble, Pete'
Nathan's new gift is foreseeing the future of his contract

Rachel: "We didn't think you'd take it personally."
Artie: "You're irritating most of the time, but don't take that personally."
Artie to Rachel who thought it didn't affect him when the team wanted him to drive alone

Barnie: "Daddy's Home"
Barney enters a room as a single man

Bonnie: "I can't talk to you, you don't listen!"
Caroline: "That's not true!"
Bonnie: "I'm a witch."
Caroline: "And don't we all know it."
Caroline proves she's open minded towards Bonnie's secrets

Calleigh: "You want to work it as a murder?"
Horatio: "I'm trying to prevent one."
Horatio kicking off the CSI trilogy with one of his taglines

Lois: "I'm going to save you a lot of time and money....it's all your parents fault."
Lois helps her therapist out by giving speed therapy to other patients.

November Sweep Higlights:
FAMILY GUY's live show was forgettable, but it's two episodes in a row (a luxery we probably won't have again this lifetime) we're funny enough to make up for it, I can't decide what's more funny Hannah Montana's King Kong moment or the Griffin's guessing the age of Brian's date --- In it's footsteps is 90210 being all the pleasure we can feel guilty over by making me actually like Dixon's mom (who's name I still don't know) and who brought the family drama to a way more interesting point then last year by having bro and sis continue fighting, Navid going after Aid, and Silver's mom turning good with an awesome half-birthday, too bad she had to die in the end --- talking about dying, SOUTH PARK was hilarious by killing all the smurf's in Cartman's rave to throw Wendy off as president, but the most awesome part of the episode was the opening scene in which the morning announcer gets killed --- and since we're on the subject, HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER deserves awards for killing a little piece inside of us and get away with it. Robin and Barney might have been the will-they-or-won't-they-couple of 2009 and it turns out; they won't. The goodbye was hilarity assured, but in the end it was touching and natural -- something SUPERNATURAL tried too by having it's own convention of, well, itself, in the second week I'm watching this show I find it epic and relaxing at the same time, the episode showed again the show has some serious persiflage chops and even had a little bit of romance...under-the-radar jokes everywhere! --- GREY'S ANATOMY performed as it's usual self by bringing Katherine Heigl back and all drama that follows, but the real kicker of the night was the Chief who turned out to have an drinking problem giving me the first real reason not to fire him like I wanted for years now, oh and I also never get enough from some good Mer/Alex time, those two are drama gold together! --- the CSI franchise did an attempt to spice up the ratings (and the popularity of Fishburne's Ray Langston) by having a case cross-over all three shows. But it was obvious there wasn't much co-working done when these scripts were written. Sure, it was one big case, but you missed the idea that it was vital to watch all three of them. It's also questionable whether Ray was really needed in Miami or New York. A failed project if you ask me, and certainly nothing memorable. Just a little treat for long-time fans. --- And when it comes to treating fans SMALLVILLE outdid itself by adding some Spy Kids and Dark Knight to it's concept. The Blur being torn down by the media, two kid twins who help him, it was all delicious. But the episode's, and perhaps season's highpoint was when Lois wanted to sacrifice herself in order to keep Clarke's secret alive. Awesome.

Up From Last Week:
Not only was GOSSIP GIRL's the threesome juicy as what not, Jenny's rise and fall and rise was more entertaining then anything she has ever done, not to mention Eric getting his game on (before losing his boyfriend, Jon, you will be missed) was some major steps in the right direction for when the older kids graduate to the movies and the show is left with it's youngsters, and speaking of being better then last week, well, there was nothing to be up from, but GLEE's comeback is certainly admireable. Artie's en Tina's short romance was sweet and painful, Puck continues to win my sympathy while Finn continues to loose it. Rachel's face getting slammed after she carefully got her lunchtray made me laugh so hard I had to pause the video. Plus Kurt's dad really makes up for one of the best TV dad's this year whereas Glee's take on Defying Gravity was kind of a let down. As for PARKS & RECREATION It wasn't as much of a great episode, but the scene in which Jerry has a great mural and instead gets made fun off was one of the most hilarious scenes of the week!

Down From Last Time:
This version of father-son switch made me reconsider watching AMERICAN DAD! this season, it has become a preachy, moral family drama instead of the edgy, smarter version of FG it used to be. If you do that, do it like The Simpsons, not 7th Heaven...meanwhile, HEROES drowns in potentially good storylines by giving it's only good new (deaf) character nothing to do for an entire episode, while waisting Knepper's talent on an endless, boring mission, meanwhile I stopped caring about anything related to Nathan since he's a goner and not coming back on the dead Mohinder from last week was a mistake. Luckily there was enough of Noah and Claire having each others back to save this episode from being an complete waist of a timeslot, kind of like MELROSE PLACE, which lost it's charm with all the backstage drama, and that feeling followed onscreen too. Unfortunately, the much hyped idea of Ella and Jonah was a big letdown, Auggie's mystery is not interesting and only David's scenes with his brother were remotely interesting, within 9 weeks MP turned from addictive drama to soapy failure

In my ears:
Anya Marina - Whatever You Like sorry Leighton, it wasn't your song this week that got me (I didn't even recognize it), no, Marina's version of T.I.'s hip song was both as juicy as up beat as the scenes it guided
Kevin McHale - Dancing With Myself first Betty ends the week dancing on it and now Artie's first centric song makes it impossible for me to ignore it any longer; it's a fantastic song and McHale performs it quit nicely

Not Anywhere Near My ears:
Leighton wasn't the only actress who missed this week, Bethany's debut back was nothing I would listen to. I love her old, indie-rock songs, but this electronic version of her was just painful to hear

How Long Before??:
Some questions I've been asking myself this week of television:
How long before FAMILY GUY starts recognizing the weird idea of a human and a dog together?
How long before either ONE TREE HILL or GREY'S ANATOMY trumps the other by using the new Snow Patrol single 'Just Say Yes' in it's coda?
How long before the people who live underneath the space ships in V start complaining they don't get any daylight?
How long before I need a psychiatrist because every aspect of Abed from COMMUNITY is exactly equal to mine?

Off The Record...Stand-Up Comedy?
I'm very against everything that's not scripted..uhm..that's not intentionally scripted, but this week offered some talk worthy content on the other side of TV land plus a cable show that caught my attention SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE: TAYLOR SWIFT gets an honorable mention, even if it technically belongs to the week before. She was geniually funny and her monologue song gets stuck in your head very easily. Kudos for making such an old program feel fresh and alive. - Meanwhile, Seth McFarlane and Alex Borstein proved that their ALMOST LIVE SHOW was nothing more then some set-in-stone jokes and songs, even if they had a great part with Marlee Matlin, to fill the night for Fox - and then there's cable, I don't really address it in this weekly blog, but some kudos have to be given to LEGEND OF THE SEEKER, I missed the first season, and the premiere was certainly confusing, because I really don't get who's on who's side, but all the lady action Charisma Carpenter got, plus the epic/movie feel made up some great television, I might check it out again...

Best Episode Of The Week:
It's Tuesday right now and just finished off the new ONE TREE HILL episode, but I'm sure that no matter what any show brings up this week can trump this braindamaging episode. Besides the beautiful title 'Now Lift Your Eyes To The Sun', this episode was all drama, and made me curse the show multiple times for being soo insanely good. So kids, close your eyes. Because d*mn you OTH for making me like all three new shallow introduced characters who all turn out to be so likeable and tortured and who I actually want to see together with the person they want to be including Alex who wants to steal Brooke's man! D*mn you for doing exactly what Brooke needed and giving our favorite girl some crazy drama! D*mn you for giving Milli so much juicy twists I actually like her now! D*mn you for treating me for yet another Brooke slaps Rachel scene, you do know how much I missed those! From all the crazy plot twists, to the unbelievable development, to the nice directing from Bush, it was all, sublime. No matter what the critics say, no matter how few people tune in, just d*mn you, One Tree Hill, d*mn you for being the best d*mn drama on television. Edit: It's Sunday right now, and no...nothing changed it.

The Week Of Television (01-11/07-11)
It was certainly not a quiet week in television, even if most of you were still recovering from all the Halloween parties. Unfortunately, that holiday had it's final moments this week and so we went on to finding out there is yet another Grey's/Private cross-over ahead, the PTC spoke shame of the upcoming GG episode but only proving they know nothing of today's youth who will only tune in faster because of this and the GLAAD couldn't appreciate South Park's attempt of subtracting one bad word people can use against them. Oh the trouble! Here's what stuck with me this week...

Best Quotes:
Gabrielle: 'You do realize, I don't know how to teach'
Carlos: 'Really...you taught Juanita a few choice words'
Gabrielle: 'Me? How about you?... What a blank of a day, Earl at the office is such a blank, I wanna kick the blank out of his blank...'
Carlos: 'Oh yeah? How about that blanking hear dresser screwed up my blanking hair, look at me I'm totally blanked'
Gabrielle: 'The blanking client didn't sign the deal, we lost a blank load of money, BLANK, BLANK, BLANK!'
Carlos and Gabrielle on whether they should home school their daughter

'On my death bed my final wish is to have my ex-wives rush to my side so I could use my dying breath to tell them both to go to hell one last time. Would I get married again? Oh absolutely, if you don't believe in love what's the point of living?'
Ron's description of his encounters with love

"The next person that offers me charity or pity will be mentioned by name in my suicide note."
Jeff's response to people wanting to help him.
Arizona: 'I love you'
Callie: 'You do?' (Arizona nods, credits roll)
Callie: 'I love you too'
Grey's Anatomy teasing us with an original first love confession

November Sweep Highlights:
GREEK had it's fifth finale (time flies) and reunited it's very own will-they-or-won't-they couple, plus threw Evan and Rebecca together, and made up for some entertaining Dale and Rusty time before bringing amazing scandal to Greek row...how will they ever graduate? - HEROES found itself so desperate that they went back to the Homecoming, easily one of the best episodes in it's run, and it worked out rather well. Seeing HRG in a possible affair, Claire on the background, and Charlie back only to leave again, it was almost worth while - Meanwhile ABC premiered it's long anticipated show V and though the trailer pretty much summed up the pilot, there's enough to look forward too, plus the prove that television CGI is getting close to that from the movies - On a more loving note, GREY'S ANATOMY put out the big guns by having Cristina kiss someone that wasn't Owen, only to have that thunder being stolen by Arizona (nice epi-centric by the way) confessing her love to Callie who almost had us believing we had to wait a week to hear her say it back

Up from last week:
PARKS & RECREATION did a stellar job by guesting the fabulous Megan Mullally in a hilarious combo with Nick Offerman
GOSSIP GIRL made sure it wasn't falling in repeat with it's B and S war by having them behave like their own age instead of adults and having Chuck actually behave like the adult and point out how ridiculous it all is, plus the whole politics scheming was very delicious
SOUTH PARK made sure it wasn't forgotten as a provoking, hatable show by finding the definition of the word...uhm... the other F word...and in my opinion, it was done it great taste almost making you feel like the message was sincere, of course, one of the involved groups had to go and be offended by a cartoon about fourth graders...mission accomplished.

In My Ears:
Gregory Alan Isakov - That Moon Song: When Jasper leaves Annie to sell drugs to Adrianna, we're not only reminded that he will bring a lot of darkness to the show, but this beautiful and heartbreaking song only indicates the pain and suffering that creep will spread over the zip code.
The Avett Brothers - I And Love And You: Technically heard last week on One Tree Hill's episode featuring the doomed relationship of Clay that ended in a beautiful picture of him crying over his dead wife in a church. The song as heartfelt as it is, only reflected the feeling you got while watching our beloved characters struggle through their love life and brings up all memories you can ever have of anything, whether you're from Brooklyn or not.
Mark Salling - Glee Cast and Crew Homage: Not heard on television, obviously, but if you remember right I was very font of Salling's portrayal of 'Sweet Caroline' two weeks ago, and checked out his website. I haven't really heard the other songs yet, but I do always appreciate an actor who's dedicated to making a show. Plus, it's kind of a funny song. http://marksallingmusic.com/media.html

DVD To Watch:
THE CULT OF CARTMAN: REVELATIONS is a simple combination of all episodes focusing on our beloved fat fourth grader from the retarded messed up town in Colorado. Normally I'm very much against compilation DVD's because they only entail episodes that are already released on the normal season DVD's and are just a simple way of extorting money from loyal fans, The Cult Of Cartman is no different, but to be fair, it is dedicated to one of the most unique characters on television today. And seriously, rewatching how he feeds a guy his own parents in the form of chili only because he made him loose five bucks or how he and Butter continue to hold hands while all their friends are in life danger is just timeless fun. You can't get enough of it, and you get some funny new menu animation plus the box set delivered in a bible-sort form on top. If you don't have all seasons of SP, this is one box that will get you through a weekend.

Best Episode Of The Week:
SUPERNATURAL S05E08 - CHANGING CHANNELS might just be the most hilarious episode of the week. I'm not a fan of the show, but when reading about this episode, I had to check it out, and it did not disappoint. I don't know what was more brilliant, the not subtle persiflage of Grey's Anatomy, mocking David Carusso's Horatio or the plot twist that the entire creating of everything led up to the point the Winchester brothers were born. This is awesome television. Besides spoofing everything dear to television of today, it was just really good. From everything about Grey's to modern sitcoms like Two and a Half Men, from crimeshows to homage to old TV it was all there and all done in perfect fashion. Kudos to this show that mixes it's epic storytelling with spoofing of other TV shows, something that's usually only done by Seth McFarlane and South Park.

It sure was quit the week: Melrose Place dumped two cast members to become more like 90210, Dollhouse was demoted out of the sweeps, TV's holiday season offically started with Halloween episodes and some shows took their first week of this season. Yep, it was alround entertaining again and I just can't wait until next week...

Music
These songs are in my ears this week:
The Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition was heard on 90210 this week and proved once again to be very addicting and perfectly right for background music, but let's be honest, I loved this song since last year's Greek finale and just used 90210 to give an honorable mention...
Mark Salling - Sweet Caroline was heard on Glee when Puck tries to get to Rachel. Salling seriously knocked it out of the gate by proving he was the show's best male singer with a song that was both sunny and raw, if Glee doesn't work out he should seriously consider a indie band.
Matt Hires - Out Of The Dark on Grey's Anatomy brought back that old feeling of Grey's, plus Meredith's voice over and a great episode to end to, this song is both happy as sad.

Best Revelation
It would be easy to go with who was to blame on Grey's, but instead I'm going with Chuck's confession (or more of a by the way mentioning) that he kissed guys before. It's not the deed that was surprising (I'm from Holland) but the flair and ease he told it with. Just coming back from conservative America, I was very surprised that Chuck used the same mentality we harbor in Europe; guys, girls, who cares, just chill! Who knew America could learn stuff from Gossip Girl?

Up
These shows had a better week then last week, or just continue to be awesome
Heroes: 4.06 Tabula Rasa, after giving up on this show and deciding to try again, this episode was just in time. From the scene that Peter thought he stopped the gun only to find his insides were out, to Sylar's reliving his past (and Kristen Bell's face) and Hiro's first appreciated time travel, there might be hope yet...
Gossip Girl: 3.06 Enough About Eve proved that though Blair is genius with Chuck, her real power is having manipulative plans only to find that she failed. This time she got serious competition of no less then Vanessa, and both proved they were powerless against Hilary Duff's status, even when Blair manipulated her own boyfriend into the arms of a guy. The episode ended with V and B sitting at a table, spit out by their friends, with nobody but each other...
Desperate Housewives: 6.04 The God-I'm-Not-Going-To-Spell-Out-This-Name was another great installement of DH's tour back to quality, this weeks revelation was kinda obvious, but worked well enough for a cliffhanger and Gaby's and John's upteenth closure felt real and sincere this time. Bring on the next one!

Down
These shows are not doing that great, or continue ot slide down even further
Family Guy -, true, this show is doing just fine, but we're barely into the season yet and we're already skipping weeks? Come on Fox, just because you can afford to produce less eppi's, doesn't mean you should! Forget Cleveland, I want McFarlane back in Quahog asap!

Best Quotes
These dialogues had me laughing on the floor...

Carlos: "I know"
Lynette: "You know what?"
Carlos: "You're little secret"
Lynette: "Oh God, you know about the twins?"
Lynette referring to her unborn children, Carlos referring to the assumed boob job.

"Oh he's doing his Heath Ledger impression. Too soon, Roger, too soon..."
Stan on Roger laying on the floor drooling and shacking after accidentally taking rat poison.

"So, my interest in football ended as suddenly and dramatically as the climax of West Side Story."
Mitchell about his failed attempt to like football.

"I'm not in love with you, I'm in love with abortions!"
Cartmen dressed up as a girl in a wrestling match.

"I will go to the animal shelter and get you a kitty cat, I will let you fall in love with that kitty cat and then on some dark cold night, I will steal away into your home and punch you in the face."
Sue on what she will do to Will if she doesn't get the set list on her desk in time.

Notable mentions
The Simpsons: 21.04 Treehouse of Horror XX
Having a returning episode setting works great and the Halloween episode of The Simpsons continues to rule the subgenre. With an nice Hitchcock sketch, some songs and the death of Homer (thrice if you count becoming a zomby) combine in another sweet installment of our favorite part of Halloween TV.

Best Episode of the week
Grey's Anatomy: 6.06 I Saw What I Saw
What do you do when your main character is on bed rest and the biggest star is absent to shoot a movie? For the answer just look at Rhimes who delivered an original and gripping episode that touched upon every single character in a complete new way. The editing, the chaos, the pieces of a puzzle that you are just desperate to see resolved, it was the best episode of GA's sixth season so far and one to remember. And extra kudos for being the first episode since last year's One Tree Hill premiere that I desperately wanted to watch a second time, and even then it did not disappoint.

Apologies to several shows for being sick and working a lot so I couldn't watch them, I'll pay more attention to them next week, promise! So this was my week of television, how was yours?
