I wrote a lil excerpt of my horrible Wednesday in another thread, but I'm going to get it out in the open in a blog entry, because it's not healthy to keep stuff like this bottled inside. Hopefully y'all can take something from my horrible experience, and I don't know, be a better consumer, or maybe understand what goes on behind the scenes of a retail establishment.

On Wednesday morning I opened. In my area I have 6 registers to open, plus a master till, so technically, 7. I was told by my assistant manager that he already opened 3 tills, and I just had to open the remaining ones. I figured I could trust him, right? Nope. After using some of the tills, I began to realize that the ones he had opened, were technically not really opened & sorted correctly, they had the money in there, but not in the right places, and the master till wasn't counted out, & signed like it should have been.

I originally had another person that was going to stay back there with me, but he was pulled for the front registers. So, all by myself. As soon as the doors opened at 10:00am, I was busy. Kept calling for back up because I had a line of people. My limit is 3 people, as soon as there are 3 people waiting in line, I have to call. There was ALWAYS at least 3 people in line.

And I'm a customer service desk associate...so I was dealing with ringing people up, returns, exchanges, looking up merchandise on the website, placing catalogue orders, signing people up to credit applications, looking up their info on the computer, calling a # to find their credit information, answering the phones, trying to make announcements over the loud speaker, talking on the walkie, and a bunch of other *goodies*.

My shift was originally from 9:30 am til 6:30 pm, well, come to find out, the girl who was supposed to work the closing shift, calls in sick. The guy that was helping me out, (but not really helping me out because he wasn't always there), was working on his day off, so he already was doing a lot more than what he's being asked to do....and me were the only ones who could work in our area. He left at 7pm, and I ended up working the closing shift.

I worked 12.12 hours on Wed., took a 2 hour lunch, and 2 fifteen minute breaks (although I think I should've taken additional breaks to pace myself thru-out the day). It was awful. On top of that, I'm not allowed to have any water bottles behind the register, and my throat was sore, hurt, and I had to somehow escape for a break to get a drink of water. And all this is NOT worth the money I'm making an hour.

I need water, at least, to continue to speak w/ the customers, and be friendly, and there, and spend time with each individual person, and be positive, and breathe, I need some kind of refreshment back there. Even when I worked at Walmart, I was allowed water with me at the register, and I'm at a higher quality retailer than that now, you would think we could have water. I'm totally going to bring it up to somebody that I need water back there, especially if I'm by myself I can't leave the counter.

We closed at 10pm, however I didn't leave until quarter to midnight because I had to close down all 7 of my registers. What a night, I'm hoping to NEVER again work a double shift like that, not for a long time anyways.

I hope you can speak privately with a higher-up about the registers and the water. I've never worked retail but I'm SURE they will want to know that the money is handled properly! Do they want to get the bugs out of the system in the first week? Those are important bugs - you NEED to voice them!

Wow, now-a-days you see employees with a water bottle everywhere, even a higher end dept store. That really surprises me that you weren't allowed. Definately say something. And I really hate it when the money is not sorted properly, that's my OCD coming out.

Oh my friend, it sounds like one of my days when working at the hotel... Thank God I quit. It was taking my life away. Oh and our double shifts were sometimes worse... Working from 3 pm to 7 am it's not always the best thing to say to your staff. I'd love to give you one advice. If you give an order, always supervise it. NEVER trust what your staff say until they've proven they're capable of doing the work. And if they let you, always train other people from your staff to do things that usually do so they can help you at the busiest times. It's very important and you won't be caught up. About the water... You should definitely talk to someone about it, because your throat needs it but your body needs it as well. I'm sure they can work something up.
Please don't be disappointed about working too much for whatever you're being paid. You have a job and you're very lucky. I'm sure that what happened that day will make you come up with a plan for busy days like that one. It's all about learning and improving, don't you think?
Have a good day tomorrow!!!

I've never worked in retail, so I have no idea what that's like. But it sounds pretty bad. Hopefully things will work out better. Not being allowed to have water bottles sounds pretty ridiculous.

HMVincent: I'd like to provide feedback, but I'm just kinda scared to say anything, even though they say they have an "open door policy," ya never know what these people are thinking, and what they could do to throw somethin' at ya and make it worse.

buffyangel4evr_: I don't know what I'm going to do, I'll have to think of something, and the thing is, I care too much, I end up caring about the place of work so much, almost like it's an extended family type situation, and I get too caught up in everything that it warps my mind.

I wish I could totally let it go, and be like, "This is my job, let me go to work and do it, and then when I go home, I don't think about it anymore."

OnePerCentClub: Thanks for the advice, I learned it the hard way about not trusting other people. You'd think you could, with the people you're working with, but it doesn't seem to be happening. I'm going to have to figure out a way to let it go, and not hold any kind of grudge, or anything like that against the other person.

And on a side note: I tend to get really angry when things aren't going right, and I know I shouldn't, because it's out of my control, and it's not something I can influence, one way or another, but it's stressing me out, unfortunately.

Amaryllis, it's normal to get angry when things are out of control. But I guess you learn to deal with it and try not let it overwhelm you, since there would be things that you will never control.

Awh, that sounds terrible. How come you're not allowed water, though? U shouldn't have to bear the bulk of your work, and others, so I'd certainly talk to someone higher up

I was so angry that I forgot the day it happened, it was actually on Tuesday. lol And...thankfully it was much better today at work, and I was recognized for my hard work on Tues., so I'm in a much better mood overall. They actually scheduled extra cashiers to come to the back to help us out rather than us bearing the brunt of the work. So lovely!

Hey! Glad to hear you were appreciated for your very hard work and dedication. Also glad to hear everything went more smoothly yesterday. Good luck!

Sounds like stress hell. I remember those days when I was a manager in retail. While I liked working with the crew, I hated the job. There were some days I would work 9 straight hours without a break, literally. Even though I've been away from that environment for 10+ years, I still have nightmares about being on a register by myself with a crowded store full of angry customers. Anyway, after that, I hope you pampered and treated yourself to something nice like a spa treatment & massage.

Maxximus_Prime: Thanks!! I think anybody who's ever worked in retail shares sympathy for one another. I did treat myself, bought a really nice necklace, and went and got my hair done.
