This film is weird. I came out of the cinema thinking, "What the hell was that?!" The trailers look good, and I thought I'd come out feeling incredibly paranoid about the number 23 but I couldn't have been more wrong. Fair enough, Jim Carrey is going down the serious route, but no-one likes him like that - go back to your jabbering, mental characters and that's when you get a successful film. This is just a desperate attempt to exploit a daft theory that has never really been considered. It just seemed pointless. I mean, sure, I could see the connections but at times it seemed like a coincidence too many - a dog called NED being related to 23. Alright, Jim Carrey was very convincing but films like this do not suit him. The ending was just a piss-take too many - it went from desperate to absolutely outrageous. As soon as Jim Carrey's character figured out what was going on, I just stopped listening; it was just stupid.

Overall it was an easy film to follow, but thats because it was explained in black and white like I was being spoon fed - audiences do have brains, you know. It wasn't a total disappointment but I certainly won't be rushing out to buy it. It's not a story, its a chance for the director to match films such as The Da Vinci Code or The Omen. I mean, relating disasters such as the Titanic and Hiroshima was just weird. How bored do you have to be to add up numbers and letters to get the number 23?!

Just because a film is #1 at the British box office doesn't necessarily mean that it's good - and that's certainly the case with this film. The trailer makes it look alright - the usual rom-com with a bit of music thrown in. The only film I like Hugh Grant in is Notting Hill; in every other film he acts exactly the same so his character in this was incredibly predictable. Drew Barrymore always tends to play the confused, weird acting woman with issues; and this film certainly isn't any different. The story is weak and they seem to throw all kinds of random stuff in to make it "exciting". The music is meant to be melodic and sweet but its actually cheesy and boring. It has the potential to be a fab film - with different actors. The girl playing the stupid pop star is painful to watch - its like watching a Paris Hilton lookalike; and at the end she practically has sex on stage with her dancers. Oh forget it, I can't think of anything good to write.

I had never even heard of this film until I saw it on the cinema listings page, but it was the only thing left to see so I decided to give it a chance. I am not a keen fan of Judi Dench so I wasn't thrilled to be seeing a movie in which she starred, but her role as Barbara has gained her an Oscar nomination so I thought I'd give her a chance too. I never had an expectations of Cate Blanchett - all I've seen her in is Lord of the Rings, and that wasn't exactly phenomenal acting. Finally, Bill Nighy has never been one of my favourite actors; ever since his role in Love Actually I have seen him as a pompous, arrogant actor.

How surprised I was. The acting in this film is the best I've seen in a long while; possibly the best I've seen. Bill Nighy deserves an Oscar nod for his role as Sheba's devoted husband. His acting is so realistic and authentic, it was like watching in on a real family going through the motions. Cate Blanchett was a revelation - her character was very naiive and it was very easy to feel sorry for her character, Sheba. I'm still not keen on Judi Dench but I suppose that's not a surprise as her role isn't exactly likeable - she comes across as a psychotic, demented lesbian... not exactly someone you want to be best buddies with. Finally, Andrew Simpson (17) plays the 15 year old boy Sheba has an affair with and he absolutely shone. Its bad enough kissing someone the same age as your mother, but having to do sex scenes with them?! His first real role shows incredibly potential, and I'm sure we'll see him in years to come.

Overall, this is one of the best dramas I have seen in a very long time. The acting is second to none, and it'll be hard to find another film that draws you in as much as Notes on a Scandal. At times I cringed, at other times I laughed, but most times I just sat back in awe at the sheer emotion and energy that went into it. Brilliant.

With a cast like Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson, I have to say, I wasn't very excited about seeing this movie. I'd listened to previews of the soundtrack and heard all the Oscar hype about it, so I decided to go along. I am very glad that I've seen this movie. The introduction reminded me of Walk The Line - it was upbeat, and didn't give too much away. The soundtrack was absolutely fabulous; each singer shone at one point in the film. Jennifer Hudson really surprised me with her acting, although she did get annoying with all her whining. Beyoncé was a revelation - who knew that girl could act like that! She looked as though she's been acting for years - I was very impressed. Jamie Foxx was easy to hate from the start - he just oozed sleaziness, as did Eddie Murphy but he turned out good.

One of the downsides is that I found myself getting very confused about what year it was and how many years had passed. Normally in films it either tells you (2 years later) or you have a little montage of time passing but in this, the screen just went black for a few milliseconds and about 5 years had passed! Towards the end of the movie, I wasn't sure whether 10 years had passed or 20 - I still don't know. Also, it was so obvious sometimes who each character was based on. Eddie Murphy was the obvious Marvin Gaye character, Beyoncé was easily Diana Ross and... they even had a singing family with afros and a little kid singing vocals - Jackson 5 anyone?

Overall it was a great film - Oscars definitely deserved. I've ordered the soundtrack because it was that good. This film is almost on par with Walk The Line although no-one seems to have Joaquin Phoenix's charm or Reese Witherspoon's ooomph! It certainly wasn't 2 hours wasted.
