We were discussing the greatest albums of all time at work today and it was pretty well universally accepted that Blonde on Blonde is that record. It got me thinking of the greatest punk albums of all time and I had to go with Janie Jones. I dare anyone to buy The Clash by The Clash and not play air guitar with a sneer on your face while you sing along with Joe Strummer's raspy voice. No matter how bad a mood I may be in, Janie Jones and co always put me in a good mood.

I went and seen District 9 the other day and, I gotta say, I was supremely disappointed. Now, before anyone protests, it was a good Sci-Fi movie. Good and Sci-Fi are not two words that usually share the same sentence so I can see why people are excited about this movie, but really, I wasn't feeling it. It was a fantastic idea and the special effects were tremendous, but it played like a comedy where all the jokes fall flat on their face. This was the Paul Blart of Sci-Fi movies. How the heck Blart received the acclaim and garnered the box office numbers it did, I'll never know. The same is true for District 9. Now, it wont appear on my worst of the year list by any means, however that doesn't mean it'll be anywhere near my top ten. Right now it's only slightly edging Mr Blart. Read: LAME.

Back to The Clash and my perpetual man-crush on everything Joe Strummer (seriously, even my haircut is Strummer-inspired), I guess I want to know if anyone else out there has a borderline disturbing fascination with another being? Like someone you admire to the point of mimicking their mannerisms or look? I know that may sound childish or... just creepy, but most of us are omegas just looking for an alpha to emulate.

Although I don't smoke, I do slick my hair back and totally rip off Strummer's don't give a f*ck / anti authority attitude. At least the kids today have no clue who Strummer was so to them I'm just some dick who listens to bad music.

A friend of mine is like this with Dylan. Even has his Dylan impression down pat. The man himself would be impressed. Or, more likely, would tell him to quit it and blaze your own trail. This would be followed by a 15+ minute rant about how capitalism and consumerism has tainted and destroyed our brains, robbing us of our attention spans and our creativity. In this, he would be right.

So, anyway, yeah. I guess my question is, and to borrow a device from a fellow blogger, Question of the Blog, who do you model yourself after? Who's your Joe Strummer/Bob Dylan?

I get to go on a business trip in October. I'm pretty stoked about the possibilities. It's not often I get to go out of town anymore (for work anyone, or pleasure for that matter) so it'll be a good time. Apparently this specific type of trip is more of a casual business bender than a lame workshop/ass kissing fest. Needless to say, I'm stoked.

-----

I'm gonna go check out Final Destination 3D (or whatever it's called) tomorrow. I've been watching a lot of movies lately, but, hey, that's just sort of what I do I guess. I've always been a movie buff. I've seen way too many and I don't really plan on quitting anytime soon. Other than that, I have the next couple of days off and I plan on having a good time and getting some much needed chilling in before I start another work week.

Here's hoping anyone who's reading this has a great week.

Take care,

Al.

It always makes me smile that punk gets you to a happy place.
Im not a big SCI FI fan and i still haven't seen district 9, but then again i have not seen a movie in a couple months. Paul Blart, now that was a piece of cr*p movie.
Borderline Disturbing fascination wise it has to go to Kurt Cobain and anyone who knows me gets it. But Emulation wise i dont really have anyone... probably my older sister? i always wanted to be her.She is effortlessly cool.Good luck on the business trip, getting to leave town no matter the reason is always a positive.

Enjoy the trip dude, and you know the rule about business trips (if you don't get laid, you deserve to be fired).

And yes, given my well-documented man crush on Dave Grohl, I can see what you mean. I'm even growing a beard like his (although on me it has the side effect of making me look like a terrorist).

Although I believe as pretty much everybody in this world believes, Bob Dylan is one of the greatest song writers of all-time, I have never really enjoyed listening to him. The Clash on the other hand, I have been listening to a lot of punk lately and The Clash are always favorites, along with Dead Kennedy's. As for District 9, I understand that it isnt for everybody, but for me it was top three of the year so far along with Drag Me To Hell and The Hurt Locker. As for modeling myself after somebody, there really isnt anybody, maybe a combination of different people. Have a great week!

dool_girl, the clash is an acquired taste so you might not dig it at first listen, but def give it a try if you can. The Olsen twins, huh? That aint nothing to be ashamed of, when I was a kid all I wanted was to be a Jedi. And, you know, I haven't quite one hundred percent abandoned that dream as of yet. And Final Destination 3D was pretty lame. It was just Final Destination 1, 2 and 3 redux. Nothing new. The 3D element was interesting, but all in all, it's a renter at best.

Ana, glad I could make you smile. Outside of Star Wars, I'm not a big sci fi fan either. Cobain is always a good choice, as long as you're not all depressed and sad like he was.

Shadow, I don't follow that rule, dude. Sorry. I'm just not that guy. If i happens, awesome, but I'm not so lonely that I'll f anything that moves. Good luck with the beard.

RTTV, it took me a long time to get into Dylan. His voice used to make my ears bleed, but now I kind of dig him. I guess you could say I'm a casual fan or an admirer, but that's the extent of it. Ah, the Dead Kennedy's. One of my all time favs for sure.

I know. Like I said, I'm a horrible human being. I guess I also have lesser man crushes on Dr Cox and Kurt Cobain, because of the depression thing.

There are other Dylan albums that I like more than Blonde on Blonde, like Highway 61 and Blood on the Tracks. And I think The Kinks, Village Green should be a heavy contender for greatest album ever.

I kind of wear my hair like Dylan back in the day. Does that count?

yeah, it's pretty well impossible to pick just one greatest album ever. there's too many greats out there. thankfully, we don't have to pick just one, though.
