(Seriously...who the hell came up with that name?)

For those of you who are not Pacific Islanders (like I am..), this place is indeed a true place and IS still in use. While I have not personally visited the hill, a popular pacific island song was made up of that word..and for you who can't pronounce polynesian words by just looking at it, here is the song in pronounciation...
-
(and this song is in ROUGH translation of Samoan..btw, its supposed to be funny and sounds funnier when you sing it in Samoan)
In New Zealand lies a hill where people can't pronounce it. People make fun and poke along it. The name, I will tell you, is VERY VERY LOOOONNG (and then they say it very fast and with drums in the background)..

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwe-nuakit natahu

{TAO MAH-TA WHAH-KAHTANGEE HAHNGA KOAWHAOOAHOO-OHTAHMAH TAYA TOORI POOKAH KAPI KIMOWNGA HOHROHNOOKOOPOHKAIWENOOAHKEET NAHTAH-HOO}-pause-

(and then the song restarts again)
Now, when people remember this hill they go "oka fefe aua'e" {that's like the samoan way of saying 'oh my gosh. what the hell.' in a nicer way and prounanciation is 'ohkah fehfeh ow-ah-eh'} and then they repeat:

Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwe-nuakit natahu

{TAO MAH-TA WHAH-KAHTANGEE HAHNGA KOAWHAOOAHOO-OHTAHMAH TAYA TOORI POOKAH KAPI KIMOWNGA HOHROHNOOKOOPOHKAIWENOOAHKEET NAHTAH-HOO} (and then the song ends with) But, the people ask for YOOOU, to stay by the bayou, and don't.....make fun....of this HILL.

I knew some of those.

I tried the humming thing - didn't work as well as the thing says! I can do it...sorta.
Posted Jul 20, 2005 6:10 pm PT
You can make noise with your nose plugged, but it isn't humming. Try humming, then instantly plug your nose in the process. It stops you dead in your tracts. But like I said, you are able to make noise with your nose plugged, but it isn't humming. The reason being is because humming is warm air coming through your nasal cavity. Even if you have your mouth open while humming and plug your nose it will stop.

I think Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch is a close runner up for world's longest place name.

It's a place in Wales.

All those things are pretty cool! Where did ya find them??

The combination "ough" can be pronounced in nine different ways; the following sentence contains them all: "A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed."

That's eight.
rough = uff
dough = oh
thoughtful = or
plough = ow
through = oo
Scarborough = uh
cough = off
hiccough = up
I don't know how you pronounce slough, but yo've got a choice of three: rhymes with plough, rhymes with rough, or rhymes with through.
So where's your ninth?
