GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

So, what's going on over on this front today? Oh yeah, right. The "governator" is appealing the constitution. Or something.

Seriously, why do people even bother anymore? At this point, it's angry housewives and uninformed governors/congressmen/lawyers against the most profitable media industry around. Sure, we have the ESRB under pressure (and perhaps monetary contributions) by people to rate games more harshly - but it's not doing anything. Parents will still buy their kids the violent games with explosions and sex no matter what letter is on the box. A rating system like this sure isn't working for movies (there is no law stating theatre owners HAVE to refuse children entry to certain movies), so why should we think it will work for video games?

Do I think children should be able to play these violent games? Hell yes. You may have done a double-take on that one, so I'll restate it: children should be able to view all the guns, fights, blood, fire, sex, and swearing they want. There isn't any evidence that these things will screw them up more than the current state of the world will. All of those things are common staples of life in the real world and it's about time we stop coddling our children - or letting the government do it for us.

And on that note, I am brought back to my original point: video game censorship will do nobody any good because it won't work. It's up to the consumer to decide what's fun and/or tasteful, not the government. It's time for the Thompsons, Clintons, and Schwarchzensomething's of the world to just give it up. You're not doing anybody any good. Please, stop wasting your time. Get back to banning the n-word or whatever a normal day entails.

But I suppose word censorship is a topic for another day.

(By the way, I don't like word censorship either.)
