Resident Evil 5 has been quite the controversial game of late. First, the demo being out in Japan months before everyone else got it, despite said demo having English text. Then it was the brouhaha over the completely unaltered control scheme. Now it's the pay-to-play VS modes.

Resident Evil versus mode.

Okay, I don't know many things, and much of the world is odd to me, but why does anyone even want a versus mode in this of all games? I don't know about you, but it seems like something painfully stapled on at the last minute, as the very idea of death matches with controls virtually unaltered from Resident Evil 4 lacks appeal to me, especially in the face of far better shooters for multiplayer including Gears of War, Call of Duty and Killzone 2. Not only that, but who the hell buys Resident Evil and wishes they could play against others? The co-op I can kind of understand, certainly, but versus? Just sounds like it'd be stupidly frustrating.

However, the reason why I'm writing this is to respond to the apparent outrage over the fact that this is going to cost five bucks (400 MS points). It seems like a lot of money, and it most certainly is for something as tacked on as this. However, the irrational reactions of some just strike me as curious, particularly those who say they're going to boycott Resident Evil 5 over this. The reaction here just strikes me as wholly immature. Why the hell would you not buy a game that, by all accounts is pretty good, simply because of a stupid piece of DLC. That'd be like not buying Street Fighter IV because Capcom put out the costume packs. Rather than show a dissatisfaction with the DLC, you're really showing a disinterest in the game, which serves no one. The best way to deal with this is to pretend the DLC isn't there. That's what I've done since this generation began. I've bought no skins, cars, costumes, picture packs, or any other stupid items that have been thrown at the two marketplaces, simply because I don't want or need them. And you know what? I've never had a problem, and have enjoyed my games regardless.

In other words, spend wisely.

Well said, YukoAsho. I agree with you about the Resident Evil 5 versus mode; it sounds like a terrible idea, one that cannot possibly be much fun. People should definitely not purchase a game just because of bad DLC for that game, it's what is on the disc that counts.

Totally agree. I'm the same way, I do not pay for DLC. I understand paying for a game like Braid or Castle Crashers, but not DLC. Everyone knows Halo 3 is my favorite 360 game, but I have not payed one penny more than the $50 I spent on the game at Costco (yes, $50 not $60). I love the game to death, I still play it online, but I don't pay for DLC and the same approach should be taken to all games that have content that's over-priced or tacked-on to pay for. If Valve can release two new campaigns for Left 4 Dead FOR FREE, than other games can do the same.

My brother-in-law is a DLC junkie as far as Xbox Live purchases so, simply for the fact that if he doesn't have the same content as his friends then he'll be left out of the loop. Knowing him, he may purchase it anyway simply because his friends may jump in that mode and earn gamer points. However, Versus mode for extra money? I could see co-op being an extra MAYBE but who would care about Versus? Isn't close-quarter combat in RE5 going to be difficult enough without worrying about other players trying to headshot you?

Then again, Hudson Soft's Onslaught for WiiWare is only $10.00 USD and supports a full (corny) story, full online coop and versus. On the Wii. When I heard about Capcom's "deal" I just shrugged my shoulders. It's not as big a deal as the gamers make it out to be, and again, there's too much going on in a RE game without a Versus option.

Spot on as always, but I doubt the twelve year olds complaining about the price will get the point. And as for Capcom, all I can think is "seriously?"

I don't see the big deal either. I wasn't even aware that RE5 HAD a VS mode until I heard about all the "outrage and controversy." Really, my mind hasn't changed after hearing about it: I don't care about this VS mode. It sounds like a pointless, stupid feature that I would never even use.

Now, if they made us purchase, say, co-op THEN I would be outraged, but that isn't the case.

It doesn't seem like it'd fit - I mean, the best way you can sum it up is basically think of it as a civil war-esque shooter. Does not seem like fun to play...but there are people out there that would dig it.

Myself not included.
