About 3 years ago, I rented the Heffalump movie solely because I thought the name was funny. I had a hard time watching it since it's intended for young children, but I still like to say "Heffalump!" occasionally just because...well, it's a fun word to say. Try it out, you might like it.

Have you ever watched a movie or read a book just because the name, cover, or poster struck your fancy?

Yes. My very first manga was Bitter Virgin. The name alone intrigued me. The manga was fantastic. I've been reading manga since.

omg, I watched that movie in college Government about 3 years ago. I forgot why, but it was funny.

Yep, The name of a movie is the main thing that makes me interested in it .(Mission Impossible ,Terminator ,etc ) .
Not only movies ,But also Games (Final Fantasy ,F.E.A.R ,ets) .
books like "Eragon ,Naughts and Crosses etc "

Heffalump?!?
Never heard of it really.
Being pulled into something via it's name.I actually can't remember ever being pulled into seeing a movie or anything via it's name.

Yeah, Bleach actually...the name seemed so odd compared to the other animes I've watched, and that's saying something. Oh and pretty much anything else I've ever read...unless it was assigned.

I never read, nor heard much about The Lord of the Rings before the first movie came out in 2001, so when I saw the poster to the movie and read "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" it struck me and I told myself: "I must see that movie." Because the poster looked so cool, and the name was so long, it just looked interesting. And it was. I still love those LOTR movies.

ST'Q: Bitter Virgin sounds like it turns out to be a love story. Does it?

ebony_kunoichi: Hey, long time no see! How's it going? And you watched the Heffalump movie for college government? Wow. ^_^

ultimadavalon: I gotcha, although I usually have to know a little about the plot before I'll jump into anything. That was always the scariest part of going to the library, you have to trust the cover, title, and blurb on the back that the books you pick aren't gonna suck.

NvmdTheFog: What does pull you into seeing or investing in something?

amber_jahn: Bleach is a rather interesting name for an anime, isn't it? I hadn't thought of that. I hear you on the reading thing.

Brodoin: I think if I hadn't already known about LOTR I would've been drawn in by the posters. I'm glad you found something you love so much by happy coincidence. ^_^

"NvmdTheFog: What does pull you into seeing or investing in something?"
I don't know. It's usually not the name as names aren't really specific they don't give much insight and don't provoke interest.I guess it would have to be something more...
Well I can't think of anything to finish that sentence.Sorry.

Lol, I think maybe you just need more than just a name? That, I totally understand.

The Heffalumps!! Oh you silly bear Pooh, haha, I remember watching that. Pooh and the gang were scared of Heffalumps but befriend them in the end. I remember an assignment I had for my Mystery writing class one time. Our teacher handed us a list of book titles to choose from with no idea what the books where about. (well a mystery of course) So I ended up choosing "Death on Demand" because I liked the title. It was a very good book and I read the series now XD.

Yes. Family guy and the phrase Holy crap.

Also when I saw Madagascar I said craka lackin a lot.

I know I have but I can't think of an example. I started watching Bleach because of the opening music. I had my back to the TV when it came on and when I heard the music I thought "Oh? What's this?" Which led to watching subs when AS ran out of dubs and that led to me comming to this site and eventually to me reading manga.

Believe it or not that's how I first got interested in Death Note, I just happened to see it while flipping through the channel guide and I thought it looked interesting. Needless to say it was lol. The same applies for a lot of the other anime I watch as well, such as Fullmetal Alchemist.

Lstin: If you like the series, I'll have to check "Death on Demand" out!

Could: I say a lot of stuff from TV shows etc. too.

AAF: I think you did mention that you picked that fancy book you own because you liked the title, or was it because you liked the cover? I can't remember.

Lights: There's a lot of interestingly named anime. I guess I hadn't thought of that before.

The Art of War? I had wanted to read it for a while. I just picked the one I did because it was all fancy and such.
Posted Dec 16, 2008 1:41 pm PT
Gah, I fail at remembering things, onii-chan. But yays for fancy pants book!
Posted Dec 16, 2008 1:57 pm PT
It is quite purdy. And still has that awesome new book smell.

Now that I think of it, there is a book the just got me by the way it looked. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (RIP). It wasn't really the name that got me, it was the cover art. The simple T-Rex bones caught my intrest. I don't regret picking the book up. It's a real page-turner.

Yes, but in a round about way. The story is about rape and recovery, but it is written from a man's perspective. The male antagonist falls in love with a girl who was assaulted and who subsequently is terrified of men. It's one of the 3 manga I have given a perfect 10.

Hmm, every once in a while, I'll find a great movie or game like this. My sister found Shadow of the Collosus in this manner- what a find!

As to ST'Q, I was shocked when I learned what Bitter Virgin was about in summary. I haven't attempted the read yet, but am still waiting.

AAF: New book smell is pretty fantastic. My hubbend has a ritual where he has to sniff his new video game booklets...it's weird, but I think it's endearing.

Brodoin: I love the symbol for Jurassic Park, it's simple but gets the point across well. I'm glad you liked it!

ST'Q: It sounds intriguing, and like I might even like it. I'll have to add it to Ye Olde To-Read list. ^_^

Ranemoraken: I'd never heard about Shadow of the Colossus before, so I went and researched it...it sounds like a game my husband might enjoy, so I'll have to see if it's for rent or somethin'. Thanks!

I second Shadow of the Colossus. It's a really good game. Graphics are great, and it has the biggest enemies I've ever seen.
Posted Dec 18, 2008 7:25 am PT
...colossal enemies? Huh.
Posted Dec 18, 2008 4:36 pm PT
omgsh all the time! I know people say "don't judge a book by its cover", but i usually do. That' how i got into Twilight in the first place. It sounds so cool Tons of manga started out that way as well....haha Hefflaump is fun to say
Posted Dec 19, 2008 11:13 am PT
sara1015: Twilight's cover always intrigued me, too. I love how striking the objects on the glossy black are...anyway, I almost picked up a copy of Twilight when I first saw it, just because of the cover, so I totally see where you're coming from. ^_^

It's been pretty popular. BV is #4 at Onemanga. It's multidimensional, and beautiful, although deeply emotionally penetrating, at each of those dimensions. And the artist really did quiet well writing from a man's perspective. I can't recomend it any higher than I already do.
Posted Dec 19, 2008 3:12 pm PT
too funny, I love it
Posted Dec 27, 2008 8:43 am PT
Nope, not as I can remember. When it's movie business I'm more of a random watcher. With anime, however, it's slightly different, Well, I haven't watched any because the title seemed cool or something, but I've ventured into several anime because I'd heard some songs from it that sounded good (anime with good soundtracks are pretty much anime I'll love =P

And I don't think I've watched the Heffalump movie. I watched the one where he had some weird nightmares about them (that one where there was this powerful storm), and since that day, I've been scared of them =P No, I probably ain't now, but I don't think I'll watch that movie anyway.

And I'd recommend you try out the Bitter Virgin manga. It's really good

i read books (mainly manga) because of the name all the time. i figure if it's got a good title, it'll be a good book. same way with movies or tv shows. anything really.
