So I'm not here to make any accusations or generally act like a dink. But I thought I'd share something unusual with you today. As you all know, I'm a big fan of the 2D platformer. And when one comes out for a system I don't own, it still catches my attention. So, today, I found myself clicking on a link to find out more about Lucidity for the 360.

Here's what Gamespot thinks as of the writing of this blog.

That sounds great, doesn't it? And nothing seems out of place until you realize one crucial detail. This game has yet to be reviewed. Look:

I found that odd, that they describe an upcoming game as "addictive" when they haven't reviewed it yet. And even moreso, that the average gamer and non-Gamespot critic response to this title is a mid-to-high meh. Isn't it a bit misleading for a gaming news site to be using opinion adjectives like "addictive" before they have even decided on a score for the game? It would be like if the defendant in a trial was referred to as guilty before the evidence was even presented. (THIS close to finishing Apollo Justice.)

But I didn't want to pick on Ludicity and find out that it's just something Gamespot does all the time. So I thought, let's be fair. What other downloadable, upcoming 2D platformers could I compare this to?

See that? That's a description that doesn't editorialize. .. Then again, it doesn't say much about the game at all. Action Adventure tells me butt. At least Lucidity's described the game. Let's try again.

Well that's even more terse! I'm really looking forward to Night SKY. Not only does this synopsis not do the game justice, nor contain any slanted adjectives to promote it before it's review, but the game page still has the working title. How insulting. Let's try one more time.

... Ugh. Come to whatever conclusions you'd like. I'm gonna climb into a hole and get back to playing niche games nobody cares about. Message me when gaming dies, hm?

Love this blog! I think the descriptions used for Night and Cave Story are copy and paste synopses that can be applied to pretty much any unreleased game.

@ Pierst179 - Hah, thanks. I'm consistently disappointed with the priorities around here. How is it that I can know of a game's existence weeks or even months before Gamespot does? They're the ones who are supposed to be informing me, aren't they? And when they do create a listing for something really promising, it's "This is an action adventure game for WiiWare." Wow. Thanks for the heads up, you guys.

Very good point. If that description is something the developers gave them to use, it'll hopefully be changed after the game is reviewed.

A slightly positive view of the situation is there are so many games that take a long time to finish 100% these days. With the few people GS actually has on staff it is no wonder they can't do much these days.

However, as a critical opinion on the situation, GS really is starting to suck. Not only do game after game go by without reviews or even the removal of the coming soon months after release, but they have time to stage a massive 'greatest waste of effort of all time' contest... personally part of me thinks few people come here any more and instead of buckling down and playing some games, they had to make some dumb contest to boost their hits before Cnet shut them off.

I haven't seen a mod around in a long time... I only get 10 or so repeat people that I keep bumping into on the forums... This place is almost like a ghost town, with the lack of reviews and information about any games not made by Nintendo or with F-words in it. It's sad really.

@ johnsteed7 - Isn't that a bit crooked of a marketing department though? Tell you what. You and I are going to make a game. We can slap it together over a weekend and a case of beer. It won't matter because the tagline we're giving Gamespot will be "The greatest game of all time!"

And the game will be called Can Ocarina Do THIS?!

@ raahsnavj - Funny you should mention the contest. I was this close to making the same point in the blog. The contest is the biggest and most ridiculous example of how they waste their resources instead of maintaining the site like they're supposed to.

Epic Mickey took forever to become available for us to track. And that Cubeleo I told you some time ago didn't make it yet. Just a few more examples...

That's why I pay very little attention to previews, "hands-on" articles, videos and the like before a game comes out. Too often I have read highly positive previews only to find a game getting a bad review when it comes out, or the opposite happening. Of course, I don't gauge my game purchases on whether or not a game gets a high score or good review, but I'd rather judge for myself based on the facts of the game whether or not I'll like it. I've yet to see a Monster Hunter game get a good review here, and I've yet to play a Monster Hunter game I don't like.

And I bounce between this site and others like IGN and 1UP because of how GS is either slow or forgetful with reviews around here. They have some hatred against lesser known PSP titles; there is no review for Phantasy Star Portable or DJ Max Fever around here, and I used other websites to help me determine whether I would want those games or not (they stand as my most oft-played PSP games now). GS needs to step it up.

hehe...

It's been over a year already that the quality of content on this website has degraded.

3 years ago, it was not like this. It all started with the departure of Greg Kasavin...after he left and the Gerstman thing happened, everybody left. Sadly, this website might actually disappear!

To be fair, the games that you've been looking into obviously took a back seat to the Big releases, although that is entirely subjective. What's Big for them is unimportant to some of us.

Well, you have to cut GS some slack. They're pretty low on editors right now, so they don't have time to review every niche game out (no matter how good that niche game is).

@julianozuca - I added Cubeleo to my list of games to search for on Gamespot back when you mentioned it last time. It would be nice to not have to have a list, if I could just hear about a game, come here, find it and bam. Done. Oh well.

@Dualmask - I know exactly what you mean about the previews and hands ons. They're always glowing and optimistic, and when the review finally arrives, you always end up wondering "Where's the guy who wrote the hands on? I think he'd have a thing or two to say about that."

@evrdayblues - Is Lucidity really that much bigger than Cave Story? They're both downloadable games for their respective systems. Both 2D. I have a hard time with this sort of thing because my gaming tastes have always skewed deeply into the niche genres. It would be nice if one of the big gaming sites took the time to really look after the atypical gamer.

@GamerJM - I'm all for cutting them some slack. The point I was trying to make was "Don't talk like you've already reviewed the game in your synopsis. It's unprofessional." And then later, it was more like "Hey, show some of these awesome games some love, huh?"

It wasn't a planned blog.

I found it! Cubeleo is called CUBELLO in western shores (http://www.gamespot.com/wii/puzzle/artstylecubello/index.html). I just tagged it with 'cubeleo', maybe this will help other people finding it...

I've got another one. Recently I run into a cheap deal near my house of a game that caught my attention: Square Enix's Front Mission for the DS. It's not an obscure franchise or from an obscure developer; even so, it never got a review - since 2007! Unfortunately I must look in another place...
