So, I completed Neverwinter Nights recently and I have to say I was amazed by how well it played considering its age. The main reason I played it was that I am getting a new computer in December and I know I will be busy playing The Orange Box, Crysis, Oblivion and almost every other great game from the past three years, so I will have no time to play this. But I am glad I chose to do it because it gets added to Planescape Torment, KOTOR, KOTOR2 in the list of amazing RPGs I have played.

Although I completed it over the course of about 6 months (WOW!) it never stopped getting better from time to time. And part of it is the story. To be honest at about the middle of chapter 2, I was not much impressed and incredibly many of the sidequests had better substories than the main one itself. But the twist at the end of the second chapter really hit me in the face. And from then on I thought it was really epic with quite a bit of history of the gameworld and so on. Though it was not as complex as Planescape Torment I felt it was awesome and quite epic in its own right.

I played KOTOR before this and at the beginning I was a bit put off by the graphics and gameplay. But since I stuck up to it, I was able to overlook the graphics and the gameplay got really interesting one I started leveling up and the amount of exotic items we can find in this game is incredible and some of it really helped in certain sidequests which would have been difficult without these items. I would suggest anyone who plays the game to atleast put up until the end of the first chapter because the gameplay and story of the later chapters is well worth some of the turn offs of the earlier ones.

Overall, I really enjoyed Neverwinter Nights and it ranks as one of the gaming experiences I most enjoyed. On other notes, since my exams have started no gaming for about 15 days after which it is going to be gaming marathon and madness with the new system and The Orange Box, Crysis and others and I hope to bring certain impressions of those games like this one in my own quest to keep this blog alive.

For people who care, here is my full review of the game.

I've never finished Neverwinter Nights, actually. I've started many a new game, but always seem to get bored midway through the second or third chapters. It's a good game, and it has many strengths, but I'm constantly bothered by the piecemeal feel of all of the levels - the game was designed for user-created dungeons in mind and even the single-player feels like one long user mod, as all of the areas are square, consist of the same basic building block chunks and every single chest in the game is trapped and contains a couple of gold pieces or a weak potion. It's still fun in spite of that, though, but I think that sameness is what's put me off each time I play Neverwinter Nights.

DJ - I agree with you on both your points. It felt as if almost every area in the game used the same tileset and every grass, every cave etc. looked just like the other one I had visited. Though I could live with that because I liked the combat and also finding exotic items never got boring.

The thing I could not live without that you mentioned was the locked chest thing. It was helpful to open these chests at first but when I got near the end it felt stupid to open a lock only to find 100 gold when I had about 200000 gold on me. And also how most traps by the end did damage me but by an amount that made no sense considering my overall health. The only trap that got me each time was the one to Paralyze and that was the one that actually affected me the most.

I actually played some of the first chapter and was turned off about two times but as I said I really loved the last two chapters and the overall game and story.

Ilias - Thanks!

Wolverine_R, I'm glad you enjoyed Neverwinter Nights. Also, in my opinion your review is spot on. Oh, and while we are pointing out some of the flaws of this awesome game... I have one that must be mentioned. This game pulls pseudo-Nintendo stuff too often with its main storyline.

Collect four beasts, and then start finding the four stones, and do so in four acts, and etc. At first, I never noticed the endless repetition of the number four. However, Shadows of Undrentide did the same thing with the four artifacts at the school. When I noticed that, the endless reoccurrances of four hit me like a ton of bricks. Now I can't play the game without laughing at the madness of it all. Totally ruins the mood, just like Nintendo's endless use of three makes boss fights very predictable.

Lazy - I haven't played Nintendo games so I don't know about that part but now that you say it I do notice that everything is in fours. Four reagents, four chapters, four stones etc. Haven't played Shadows of the Undretide, will probably do so later and thanks for the mention on the review.
