CBS has elected to rerun the first three eps of Moonlight, and to tell the truth I'm not that put out. It has turned out to be a wonderful chance to have some friends over and introduce them to my new guilty pleasure, and get some first time viewer perspective.
When the announcement hit that on Dec 21st CBS would air "No Such Thing as Vampires" again, I quickly sent out a few emails inviting some close buds over for wine, chocolate and chance to fall in love. Next I prepped by writing up some rating sheets and downloading eps 1-6 to have ready should they feel the ML fever after seeing ep 1. Good thing I did! By 1:00 am we had polished off the chocolate along episode 6, and were in a heated discussion on whether Beth was being unfaithful to Josh by allowing Mick to bite her.
It was GREAT to hear a newbie's perspective on many things. The following are some of their observations from episode 1.
- The interview with a Vampire. Some were pleased to have an introduction into this new Vampire world. One however was disappointed that the writers didn't trust us enough to figure it out for ourselves.
- The opening scene when we see Mick shoot-up really bothered some of them. It's funny how it hadn't put me off when I first saw it. in fact I loved it and have been disappointed to see Mick drink his blood ever sense. Some felt it made him too "edgy". I think it makes him seem more honest about what he really is.
- The scene when we first meet Josef. This had some laughing and other scratching their heads. Some didn't catch onto his relationship with Mick until later on. They felt this first scene needed more.
- Everyone LOVED Alex's line about Vampires being back in style and how some people find them attractive.
- The dead girls draped in pink sheets. Sense the room was filled with women, everyone found this a little too cliché. Someone even shouted at the TV "Oh, Give me a break! Ya because serial killers carry around a spare set of sheets."
This reviewing of ep 1 was also beneficial for me. Sense I already had a grasp on the characters, this time I was able to sit back and view other aspects I had missed. Some those included:
- The jar of apples that sits in front of Mick's hidden blood bank. That whole wall is covered with empty apothecary jars except for the one in front of the hidden panel. This one is filled with red apples. Echos of Adam and Eve and the forbidden fruit?!
- The wardrobe! Talk about a change! Both Sophia and Alex have a completely different look in ep 1 verses the following ones. More reserved and understated here. I haven't read anything on the costume designer changing during filming but I wouldn't be surprised to find that out. The following eps have a major improvement in wardrobe.
- Sophia's delivering of Beth. Let me perfuse the following by saying that I have enjoyed watching Sophia before seeing her on ML. And I can even say that I have admired her previous work. But in this ep I think she is still getting use to Beth. She does a nice job showing us that Beth is a no nonsense kid of gal but she is a little ruff around the edges. I feel she's smoothed out quite a bit sense.
Over all everyone loved it and was salivating for more. We plan to do this again next week and invite even more first timers to come. Hopefully by the time episode 11 finally airs my living room will be filled beyond capacity with new raved fans.
