Wii Woes:

So, Iwata says the Wii has stalled, huh? No kdding! Today, Nintendo, I want to teach you a little history lesson. And, amusingly enough, you will end up learning from yourself! Here we go:

If one reads the full history of Nintendo (a Gamespot article, and a great one at that), a philosophy of Nintendo becomes quite apparent: Gameplay first, graphics last. Nintendo has always developed high quality games for its systems, as well as getting well known third party developers to do the same. Reading the history of Nintendo shows that-again and again-Nintendo's system's areoutperformed graphically by other offerings, yet succeed in sales. Why is that? When the Sega 32X (We know it as the Genesis), a 32-bit system, was getting stomped on by the NintendoSNES, a 16-bit system, a puzzled press asked a Nintendo representativethe reason for the SNES success over its technically superior partner. His response? "Games make the system, not graphics".

Beautiful.Hit the nail on the head. While the SNES was getting Mario, Link, Mortal Combat, and other such gold titles, the Genesis was getting flops, rushed projects, and poorly done ports. Who cares how good a game looks if it sucks? As for me,graphics have always been second rate in myopinion. Honestly, I don't much care for amazing graphics. Sure, its nice, but gameplay and storyline mean so much more. As an exmaple, I enjoy Call of Duty on my Wii considerably more than I do on a PS3 or 360. Are the visiuals sub-par on the Wii? Yes. But the control scheme more than makes up for it in my book.

So, right now, some of you are thinking, "Whatever, Nintendo's under poweredsystems have sold well because of kids, thats all.Graphics are the real sale point of a system". Well, here is another tidbit to back up my opinion. The PS2, despite beingnine years old, is stelling selling respectably well. Why is that? Because of its amazing graphics? Compared to todays systems, its graphics aren't anything special, so no one should be buying it anymore, right? Wrong. The PS2 has a plethora of outstanding titles spanning every imaginable genre. RPGs, FPS, rythm games, and a laudable amount of highly unique games. Titles like Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Shadow of the Colossus, Time Splitters, Okami, Parapa the Rapper, ICO, Guitar Hero, and much more made this system strong. There is a wealth of instant ****cs and must-not-miss games on the PS2. Heck, their still developing games for it today!

And why has the DS become the best selling game system of all time? Amazing titles. Sure, there is alot of junk to sift through to find the good titles, but some simply outstanding games have been, are being, and will be developed for the DS. Many games on it are a can't-miss experience, and the DS's sales reflect that.

So, back on track. Nintendo, why do you think your Wii sold strong, then flat-lined a fewyears later? Maybe, I dunno, its because of the complete lack of good games bieng developed? Yah, that might be it. Almost nothing but shovel-ware and senseless periphreals have graced Wii in the last two years. There certainly are good titles for the Wii, but a steady stream (or even anoccasional stream!) of quality titles are needed to sustain a system's worth.Nintendo systems are all I have everowned, but thisgame draught for the Wii has pushed me over theedge and into buying a PS3.

Nintendo, you single handedly brought the gaming industry back from the brink of collapse by creatinga system(the NES) with high quality titles,keeping down shovel-ware by instituting the "Nintendo Seal of Quality".In this way, you pulled theentire industry back into existence, even after poor quality games had turned the publicopinion to that of believing gaming was a "fad", and that it was "done and over". So, don't fell victim to something that, by conquering, made you great. No more junk, no morefoolishness, no more periphreals, no more gimmicks, no more Mario Galaxy 2 (seriously...); bacl basics. Remember who your realfans are: not the Wii Fit buying sixty year olds, but the teen to young adults who truly love your offerings.

Learn from your past to shape your future. That is all.

Very well written and 100% accurate. I can only wish someone important might actually read this and take notice

Couldn't have said it better myself. I want a PS3 too. Except for two things: I want Super Mario Galaxy 2, why does everyone hate on it so much? Much more interesting than New Super Mario Bros. Wii if you ask me... Although yes, I wish they'd branch out more. And PS2 hasn't had a good title since 2007 imo.

Interesting enough to say the say least, but it's one-sided and leaves out the success of other game systems.

I have noticed that too. I LOVED nintendo! But my interests have been going to sony and microsoft just because there have been much more intersting titles than "wario ware" and "Wii fit". I miss all the new fresh titles that they used to come out with.

while your blog was true the very same casuals are the ones keeping Nintendo from ending up like Sony but yes Nintendo needs to start picking up the pace.

This is brilliance. Simple brilliance. The SNES was my favorite system of all time. Games were just good. Pure fun. While I'm not against casual gaming, I think Nintendo needs to make way less of it, and start focusing on those who really, truly care. Mr. Iwata needs to read this. Hey, and change the category to "Editorial" so the GS staff will see it.

Imo, there are a lot of fun games for the Wii, but they are just way too easy. I beat Star wars force unleashed in 2 days.

@Barkera0: Thanks! I appreciate it, and I hope very they get the message.

@DMLSLAT: Yup, my dad just bought a 40-inch HDTV, so I am def getting a PS3 now. First game is probably going to be Infamous. Although I am sure MArio Galaxy 2 will probably be good, its more the idea of Mario Galaxy 2 I don't like. Instead of developing a new IP, or bringing one of the many titles that deserve to be on the Wii, they take the easy way out and milk the cash cow with MG2.

@Element-17: I love critiscism of all kinds! Thanks for your comment.

@soolkiki: Yup, many of us Wii owners are fed up with the foolishness, and for some of us, like me, it has made us take action. I couldn't live without my Wii (gotta have it for any future Zelda titles and the sort), but soon it won't be my main system.

@reveiwer: Agreed. I believe Nintendo has become drunk of the gulibility of the casual market. That market, IMO, won't support them forever.

@nintendo-naut: I can't thank you (and all you guys!) enough for your comments. It makes working hard on these blogs worth it. I changed it to editorial. DOes that mean it has a chance of going on the Soap box or something? That would be awesome.

@gamedude2009: Yah, there are great games: Okami, Smash Bros, COD: WaW, and so on. But for every good game for the Wii, there are at leats 10 for the PS3/360. I honestly can't think of a single good Wii game that has come out in the last year...
Posted Nov 2, 2009 8:48 pm PT
@VXLbeast: Unfortunately, I don't have a PS3 or a 360, so I can't get any of those games.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 6:31 am PT
@VXLbeast

Yeah, when you change it to editorial, GS considers it for "Spam Filter" and the Soapbox.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 2:21 pm PT
Well that's a good point. I'll still buy it but I do wish they'd try something other than the occasional workout game with half-assed graphics and great controls, Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby and Pokemon. That coming from the biggest Zelda fan EVER.

Dude I'm getting MGS4 first, without question, as soon as I get one. inFamous looks good, but MGS is where it's at man. And I'm hearing Uncharted 2 is fantastic.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 2:33 pm PT
@gamedude2009: I used to be content with my Wii, I din't need a 360 or PS3. Sadly, that has changed.

@nintendo-naut: Very cool.

@DMLSLAT: MGS4 was going to be my first game, but my friend bought it and didn't like it at all. HE said for every five minutes of gameplay, there was 20 minutes of cutscenes, and that half the gameplay was crawling and hiding anyways. That being said, I still plan on playing it, but I wil probably just borrow it from my friend.
Yah, I haven't heard a single bad thing about Uncharted 2, so that will certainly be on my list.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 2:57 pm PT
Well I do have to say MGS does take some getting used to. Some will just never like it because it's part movie, part game (and better than most movies and games), so you don't go out and shoot people mindlessly. However, at this point in the series Kojima has made a very good balance out of sneaking and shooting. Maybe it's a little more sneaking oriented in the beginning, but from everything I know you have the option of blasting your way through if you so choose.

And as for all of the cutscenes- there are a ton, of course, because like I said, it's part movie, but you can skip them if you really don't care. I watch all of the cutscenes though because I absolutely love the story, this coming from a fantasy buff. To me, this story's unparalleled among games, and the gameplay is in the top tiers. so I never get bored with it. It doesn't appeal to those who would prefer to just shoot things in Halo, I'm sure, but I'm definitely getting it before anything else.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 3:18 pm PT
@DMLSLAT: Yah, my friend is more of a shoot' em up kind of guy, so maybe the game will appeal to me. Nearly half of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor is text that advances the story and develops the characters, and I love that game. So in the end, I guess I will just have to try out MGS4 and see for myself whether it is my kind of game. I really want to play bioshock as well, since it is a very story driven and mysterious. Sadly, it is very violent, so I probably won't be able to play it. Oh well, there are many excellent games for the PS3 (Can't wait for the new Final Fantasy XIII, the new Shin Megami Tensei: Persona, and Nier Complex, a Square Enix title in the works).
Posted Nov 3, 2009 3:43 pm PT
Not trying to rip on your friend, I'm just pointing out that you have to appreciate story to fully appreciate MGS though. It's rated M too just so you know if you can't play BioShock...
Posted Nov 3, 2009 4:03 pm PT
@DMLSLAT: Its not that I can't play M-games, its the content in the M-games. COD is fine because there is very little blood at all. That is not the case in Bioshock though.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 4:33 pm PT
Well just don't bother telling your parents what it's like...
Posted Nov 3, 2009 7:56 pm PT
@DMLSLAT: That might work, but my dad actively watches me play video games, he enjoys spending time with me and talkign with me while I play. PLus my parents trust me, and I don't really want to break that, lol.
Posted Nov 3, 2009 8:03 pm PT
I think if they know you know the difference between fantasy and reality and that it's only a game though, they should be trusting enough of you to let you get it. That's why my parents will let me get GTA and RE and such (I just can't play when my sister's in the room).

Sorry for my late jump in. I've been quite busy as of late.But...on to the topic at hand.

Yes,the brickheads over there at Nintendo definitely need to get their mind out of the gutter.They've gotten overconfident and lowered their guard,allowing Sony and Microsoft to hit em where it hurts.This does not bode well for us Wii owners.Eventually,some of us,like VXLbeast here,may crack and just hop onto the bandwagon that is Sony and/or Microsoft.

Now I hear Nintendo is releasing a Wii Fit PLUS?!?! I don't need to get fit EVEN MORE than the first time!(That was hypothetical,I DO NOT own it,and DO NOT plan on wasting $70 for that crap.)This just shows even more how they're just off in La-La Land.They need to snap out of that mindless reverie! We got HVS and Treyarch busting a nut working on their upcoming Wii titles,yet Nintendo just relaxes like a bunch of good-for-nothing do-naughts! They need to join the fray,or risk utter system obliteration!

Phew,I think that concludes my thoughts on this.

Oh,and Bioshock isn't all THAT bloody...aside from the random pools and streaks of blood and the pinkish color of blood that ejects from splicers when you hurt them,it's just kinda bland in the blood department.It's not Gears or anything...

Sup poppie...Good blog...
I still want a PS3...

I'm not too concerned about what is or isn't coming out on the wii...I already got all the titles that my family wants...And with New Mario and Reflex coming out next week, I will steadily be happy with gaming on the wii...

@DMLSLAT: Its funny, because my dad never cared, and neither did my mom really. But recently my friend's parents took a sudden stand against first person shooters in general (even though he owned a couple already). My dad still didn't care, but I think my mom felt like a bad parent for letting her kid play those "awful games all about death". So, with righteous vindication driving her, no more FPSs for me. My dad couldn't care less, but if momma ain't happy, ain't nobody happy, lol.
@3quin0X: My thoughts exactly. Wii Fit Plus, and the Wii VItality Sensor? Is NIntendo a game company or a gag company? Here of late, it is harder to tell.
@hoop210: Dude, you should get a PS3! Course...not sure how that would go over with the wifey. If your content with your Wii, thats awesome. Just a year ago I was alos content, I did want anything besides my Wii or my DS. But now, within the past year, that has changed. Now that my dad finally bought a new TV (40 inch 1080P Sony Bravia HD TV ), I am getting a PS3 for sure.
Posted Nov 4, 2009 7:05 pm PT
"Awful games all about death"?Death is all around you in this world.Anyone is bound to die every day.Unless the kid's mind is VERY messed up,it's not like it will have any long term effects.Look at me,I'M still sane(maybe).It's pointless to argue on this,I know,but I'm just speaking my mind.It's just unfair for parents to weave the puppet strings on their children to do what satisfies them.Ever heard the phrase "Think about the children(or teens...)."? Mostly,it means to stop being selfish and do what's right for the children...LET THEM MAKE THEIR OWN LIFE DECISIONS,if it yields bad consequences,it's their fault,then.
Posted Nov 4, 2009 7:22 pm PT
@3quin0X: Exactly. Many people have played COD and grown up to lead succesful, non-serial killer lives. Unless someone has a poor grasp on reality (no eight year old should be playing DOOM), videos games don't make you violent, and they don't make you a killer. Game Informer wrote an awesome article called, "Video Games Made Me Do It". It was awesome. Wonder if I sitll have it...
Posted Nov 4, 2009 7:35 pm PT
Too bad parents are too blind to see the truth.News stations and other similar sources tend to warp the truth into something that it is not.They're always assuming a video game is a catalyst for catastrophe or the like.On the contrary,it improves someone in a number of ways,much like what you've mentioned,VXL.I only yearn for the day video games are truly accepted by all...
Posted Nov 4, 2009 7:47 pm PT
Lol that sounds like my mom...
Posted Nov 4, 2009 8:58 pm PT
@3quin0X:

You and me both man. I can't wait for the day that people relaize games don't make murderers, and that video games aren't mindless and senseless. In my opinion, playing a great video game is like reading a good book. It offers you a host of emotions, draws you in, and leaves you feeling satisfied (and wanting more) in the end.

@DMLSLAT: My mom sounds like almost everyone's mom, lol.
Posted Nov 5, 2009 6:22 pm PT
All we can do is pray till that day comes...because it's not happening anytime soon,THAT'S for sure.
