Anybody who thought this was a song lyric, please go and swallow a knife right now. As some of you know, some of you may not know, I don't really care, I recently bought Weezer's The Blue Album. And well, here's the review:

Starting with the cover, these guys look like total dorks, especially the last one. I just hadda say that. Now for what I thought of the songs:

1. My Name Is Jonas - I liked this song. It's got a nice opening riff and its probably the hardest song on the album, which is good because I can't stand stuff that's too soft. 8/10

2. No One Else - This song had some decent lyrics, but for whatever reason, I just couldn't get that into it. It starts off like it's gonna be a hard rocker, but then they slow it down. I as slightly disappointed.6/10

3. The World Has Turned And Left Me Here - This just simply isn't my type of song. I listened to it once and then didn't listen to it again, I didn't like the vocals and I didn't like the guitar lines. 3/10

4. Buddy Holly - This is when the album starts to get pretty good. This one is very catchy and the lyrics are impressive. I listened to this one several times and the only drawback is that sounds just a bit too poppish. 7/10

5. Undone - The Sweater Song - Now, the chorus of this song is great as are the verses, but what bothered me was the opening part where the guy is just talking to his friend at the concert/party. That part was so freaking stupid and pointless. Other than that, good. 7/10

6. Surf Wax America - This one had the best guitar riff on the album and it is really catchy. Surf Rockish I guess is what you'd call it. 8/10

7. Say It Ain't So - Seems to be Weezer's most popular song. I already knew it from Rock Band and I thought it was OK. The lyrics could be better I guess, but overall a good song. 7/10

8. In The Garage - Definately my favorite. I loved the lyrics and I liked the references used. It doesn't get a 10 though, because nothing's perfect.   9/10

9. Holiday and 10. Only In Dreams - I can't remember these song too much, but if I liked them, I'd have remembered them. So for not being memorable, these song get a 5/10

Ah yes, the band itself. Well, the lyrics aren't bad I guess, not that good, but not bad. The singer while not great seems to be competent enough. The guitar(s) were pretty lackluster I thought other than My Name Is Jonas and Surf Wax America. The rythym section was good and I don't see many flaws there. This is a good album, worthy of buying and listening to. Even though alternative is not my thing. Overall, it gets a 7.5/10

Well have fun.

God damn you never step out of listening to classic rock. Thank God you did for once!

I'm disappointed in this review Tweek. Let me down. If you judge a song by its lyrics, you've gotta explain what you didn't like or give an example. And I've forgotten about tons of great songs so you have to listen to them before giving them a 5.

Weezer also aren't the kind of band that you pick apart, looking at the lyrics (which are supposed to b kind of goofy at times), judging the singer, and discussing the guitars, as everything is supposed to just be fun. if you want a more complicated album with better lyrics, get "Pinkerton".

I'm glad you at least liked it.

And they're supposed to look like dorks. One subgenre of theirs is "Geek Rock."

I didn't judge completely by lyrics. I went all around, the lyrics are just what I decided to mention. Expect a major list to come within the next few days. And anybody who wants to know why I didn't like something can ask why and I'll be happy to explain.

I'm not a big Weezer fan, I'm more of a Pinkerton fan and thats pretty much it. I actually didn't think you'd enjoy this album much/.

the blue album in my opinion would overall be an 8/10 and i do agree with you, the world has turned and left me here is an awful song IMO.

Um, when does No One Else slow down? The tempo is consistant throughout the whole song. The World has Turned is probably my favourite song from that album, I'm surprised you didn't like it. Since when is being to poppish a drawback? A lot of your favourite bands were pop back in their day. Sat it Aint So isn't Weezer's most popular song, in fact it was the least successful single on the album, also the lyrics are fantastic. The lyrics on this album are great. Rivers Cuomo is more than competant on the mic, one of the most distinctive voices in rock history. How can the guitars be lackluster, what the hell do you know about guitars? How can you judge an album on the skill of the players? It's like punk never happened.

Dee-
You're right about judging lyrics, giving examples etc. But Weezer aren't meant to be "just fun." Have you actually read some of the lyrics?

Elmis- Not the lyrics, just some of the music like "Surf Wax America" is supposed to just be fun. And I agree on "The World Has Turned...", it's one of my favorites, probably my 3rd favorite.

And this is the only album that I've heard by Weezer, so I can't accurately judge them as a band, just this album, and I find it kind of fun. Some darker and serious music, but some fun music. And I agree with you that poppish shouldn't be a setback. Tweek, you really oughta step out of only liking somewhat heavy rock. I was stuck on just liking rock for a while, but trying out alternative, a little electronic among other things is great. Saying "I hate when songs are too soft..." is a little close-minded.

You know some of the best music has been made without any distortion. I completely disagree, this is a great album. 9/10

DrJ89- Exactly! My favorite songs of all time have no distortion except for one or two parts in each! A song can be very soft and still be fantastic.

Elmis. Elmis, Elmis, Elmis. That's quite an opinion, now let me answer everything for you. No One Else starts with a hard riff but then you never hear that riff again. The World Has Turned And Left Me Here is just simply not for me, I don't know how else to put it. Yes, to me, being too poppish is a setback. I'm actually not too fond of the Rolling Stones' more poppish songs and I never liekd the Beatles very much because half their stuff is pop. Say It Ain't So isn't the most popular song? Well, that's why I said "seems like it" because I would not know. Please explain to me what makes the lyrics so special in that song. The album as a whole, give me a few example os "fantastic" lyrics. And Rivers Cuomo, what makes him so awesome? To me, he sounds liek just another decent rock singer and there are thousands of those. I didn't notice much as far as guitars go, that makes it lackluster to me. And I know PLENTY about guitars, trust me. It's not like I judged the album entirely on the skill of the players, but that will always be an important factor.

I'm afraid that when reviewing something, I cannot get really into it unless I either really loved it or really hated it. This album was neither.

Dee: Classic hard rock isn't even close to all I listen to. I'm surprised you said that. I listen to some grunge, I like Sublime, RATM, I LOVE the White Stripes, there's a few dozen other bands that I could list. I'm just not a fan of the soft stuff or alternative. All my friends like alternative but I never did, and I have heard plenty of it too.

I'm aware of that, but you sounded way to close minded on the first song review.

That riff appears twice more in the song. As for The World Has Turned, that was directed at hp more who dismissed it as awful. The lyrics on Say it Aint So are a precursor to the emotional songs on Pinkerton. Say it Aint So is a sad, resigned song, climaxing at the bridge. As for the fantastic lyrics: "I just made love with your sweet memory/one thousand times in my mind", "I want a girl who will laugh for no one else/When I'm away she puts the makeup on the shelf", there's more, but I can't be bothered. Rivers' voice is really unique, you just have to listen to it. You obviously don't know much about guitars if you think they're lackluster. And how is the skill of the players an important factor? If you count that out you miss out on some of the best music around. The Ramones couldn't play, neither could a lot of other punk bands.
