Hi everyone, Turk here and today's the day for the WWE's second biggest PPV of the year Summerslam (I personally don't think so, I think the Royal Rumble's bigger). That review will come sometime next week however there's something I need to get out of the way first before I get started. It's been a long time since I've done a review (current or Flashback). This is due to the fact that I've been unbelievably busy with work related stuff. You see, I work in a college on an Apprenticeship and this time of the year is always the busiest. I've had to do a lot of my work at home because of overload and I've hardly had anytime to myself; even finding time to post on WWEv and other user's blogs has been hard. However, I believe the worst is over as things are starting to get back to normal…meaning that I can now bring you my Flashback Review of the 1999 edition of the 'Grand Daddy of Them All', WWF Wrestlemania 15.
It was during this time that the WWF were at their best, putting on great PPV's and Television. However, WM 15 isn't one of them. Like the Royal Rumble from the same year, this show suffered from over booking and that feeling that too much was going on.
The first match of the evening was a Triple Threat Hardcore Title Match between Al Snow, Hardcore Holly and champion B.A. Billy Gunn. Plenty of weapons were used including a Table, a Chair, a Hockey Stick and a Broom. I must say, for me, this was a disappointing opening. It was decent but it didn't get me excited for the rest of the show which is what an opener should do. The match ended when Gunn gave Snow the Famea$$er on a Chair and Holly took the advantage and the win. The next match was for the Tag Team Titles with champions Owen Hart and Jeff Jarrett defending against Test and D'Lo Brown. Test and D'Lo were chosen due to a Battle Royal on Sunday Night Heat before the PPV where the last two men would get a shot at the titles. Basically, forget about this match. Nothing memorable and very boring. It was a shame that this is Owen's last WM match. Owen and Jarrett retained the titles.
We then came to a special Brawl for All Match (A Boxing Match) between Bart Gunn and Butterbean. Again, nothing to write home about with the only memorable part being the huge right hand at the end which knocked out Gunn. The fourth match of the PPV was 'The Big Show' Paul Wight vs Mankind. The storyline behind this was whoever won the match would referee the Main Event. Decent but forgettable match (can you see a pattern developing here). The match ended with a very poor DQ finish when Show chokeslamed Foley through two steel chairs, giving Mankind the win.
A Fatal Four Way Match for the Intercontinental Title was next. I had high hopes for this since I thought that it might be fast-paced and exciting. Wrong I was. Another average match with no heat from the crowd. Road Dogg retained the title in this sluggish contest. It was after this match that we find out that Mankind is unable to be the Special Guest Referee in the Main Event due to injuries from earlier in the night. Mr McMahon announces that he will take Foley's spot. We then came to Triple H vs Kane. Another disappointing match and very slow. Only two things to remember here. 1. Pete Rose got Tombstoned again…which always got a chuckle from me and 2. Chyna betrays Kane and rejoins DX by hitting him with a Steel Chair (which draws the DQ). The next match was for the Women's Championship. Sable, the champion, and Tori wrestled an absolutely awful match. Some big women interferes to give Sable the win. My personal choice for Worst Match of the Year 1999.
Up next was the European Championship Match. This was when I changed my opinion about Shane McMahon since he worked really hard in this match and took some nice bumps. The only thing I didn't like was how it ended. Triple H came down to ringside to help fellow DX member X-Pac (or so it looked like) but turned on him and joined the Corporation with a Pedigree giving Shane O Mac the win. That's the fourth match in a row that had some form of interference determine the outcome. And then we came to Undertaker vs The Big Boss Man in what every single wrestling fan on the planet consider to be the Worst Hell in a Cell Match of all time, so that should tell you everything about it.
And finally, the Main Event for the WWF Championship. The biggest WM Main Event off all time (until the next one that came along). The two biggest stars of the Attitude era…The Rock and 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin. For me, this isn't their best WM match but it is still an awesome match which saved this show. Mr McMahon entered first to referee the match. However, Commissioner Shawn Michaels made a surprise appearance to a huge pop and gave Vince his marching orders. As I said earlier, the match was fantastic and ended when Vince interfered (god I'm sick of that word now) but Foley returned, knocked McMahon out and took over referee duties. Austin would then go on to win the title with the Stone Cold Stunner.
So overall, very average WM. The problem with this show was that there was just too much going on and FAR(!) too much interference. If it had just been kept simple this would have been a good WM. Instead, we got a WM that many people would put in their bottom five along with 9 and 13. Ratings:
