This is something I've wanted to write about for along time and since what I'm about to rant on occurs all the time here, I figure this is the best place to do it.

We've all seen it, especially if you've been in System Wars. Sadly, this problem isn't limited to just one place. What is this problem? Opinions. Yes, opinions. Or, more specifically, the claim that something is an opinion. You know what I mean, Valve fanboy says Halo sucks and that Half-Life is a vastly superior game, Halo fanboy gets angry and says,"Hey, that's your opinion. We all have different ones, accept it." You know what happens when I read a line like that? My brain locks up and I let out a massive groan. Well...not literally, but you get the picture.

What's the problem with this you ask? Well, there is one massive problem with it: it kills debates. Whenever someone says that, what else can you say? No matter what you argue, they can always throw that at you and well...what else can you do? Nothing, really. Sure you can continue to argue why God of War is awesome and Ninja Gaiden blows, but what defense have you against such a weapon? You may still get your point across, but that's not the problem. The elephant in the room is that the debate is already dead...it's one sided at most. And well, I don't know about you, but I believe debates need at least two people to tango.

So here is some advice: stop saying it. Seriously, just don't bother with it at all. Why? Because we know what were are debating almost always boils down to opinion. When I say I prefer Ninja Gaiden over God of War because I believe it has better gameplay, I know that's an opinion. Why bother telling me? Why not respond in a more interesting manner? Like...oh, I dunno...telling me why you disagree? You know...debating me on the subject?

Sure, there will always be people who use it and who are more interested in trolling than debating. However, those sorts aren't the only problem. Posters who are usually excellent otherwise use it all the time, which is quite sad and frankly, needs to stop.

So do your part! Next time someone says,"Anyone who says Halo is better than Half-Life is flat out wrong." Don't say,"In your opinion..." say,"Excuse me, sir, but that is incorrect. Halo is quite a fantastic game and has more than enough swell things going for it to rival Half-Life. For example, blah...blah...blah."

Support debate, stop debate killers!

Great blog post. I noticed this on quite a few other forums and it's not just on videogames. I agree that it needs to stop because it kills the debate, but some people just like a certain thing without any reason.
