GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

I was having a discussion with my dad last night. I was applying for this Engineering Program at the college in my town and they asked me to write a 100 word essay on why I wanted to apply. I love web design, so I put that down. But I also wanted to learn how to make games, so I put that down too. My dad was saying that if I was going to write that I wanted a career in games, I should put that I wanted to make "educational games" (still don't know what that means. Elmo's ABC's comes to mind... ) So I told him that the point of video gaming is to entertain. He retorted saying that they would think of another horny teenager trying to create a GTA-like game. I replied with "What about a game like Zelda or Mario?" And he said that no one has heard of those games! At least he hadn't until I had told him! This really disturbed me! Is this what everyone thinks of gamers? That just because GTA is in the news because of it's... it's... (I don't know) disgusting-ness, that other games like the famed Mario, for instance, don't exist, or don't matter?! Please tell me it ain't true!

NOTE: I orginally put this in the GC forum, but then I realised I should probably put it in my blog!

I know, right! Who has never heard of Mario? I have heard of Mario even being deprived of TV and videogames as a child! (I played Sonic at my cousin's house )

Seriously who never heard of Mario?Thats something you don't hear everyday

well, obviously the news and other media focus in on the controversial games. But still, most people today should have some idea of who mario is. My parents will know what I'm talking about

Maybe the Wii will take care of it. You know, bringing everyone together in gaming, not just the "hardcore" but everyone else, too? Hopefully then, my paretns will play. My mom showed some interest in me playing Animal Crossing to-day though, which was cool...

some people have such a closed mind!!
It's a great job, and you have advantage because you live in Japan
Be w00t and follow what you think is good for you!!

Thanks, loic54... I don't live in Japan, though. It's a long story, why I put that, but now I can't change it...

Um okay. Thats just messed up. Everyone should know Zelda and Mario even if they don't play them.

Well according to that book "Game Over" Mario was more recognized among kids at the time it came out than Mickey Mouse. And I guess those kids must have had parents, so I guess SOME people know about games.

I kind of know what you mean though. My grandfather is always talking about how the internet is bad news, because that's all he hears about on CBS News or whatever. The only good thing he's ever said to me about the internet is that it sends e-mail, and he just asked about that when he wanted me to help him e-mail the phone company about his bill not coming that month.

Slap your dad in the face for me.

Already done, Happy_Cloud. Seishiro, I guess it just goes to show that being updated with the news doesn't show how informed you are. Is your grandad obssesed with being "informed", because mine certainly is.

Don't get me wrong, I love my dad and all, but sometimes he acts like he knows it all when, sometimes he really doesn't.

By the way, what do you guys think of that Clinton woman, now?

Sonic, Mario, Grand theft auto (boo), pokemon and the LOZ games have all been heard of by everyone that is 5 or older around UK, (Mario at the very least). My parents hate video games but they know about all the above games and RE series. If the UK knows that much, why Japan doesn't I wouldn't know so your dad really got it wrong.

........She's not from japan. She's said it a couple of times.

You can't expect everyone to know, there's always gotta be someone out of the loop.

I don't expect everyone to know... I really should change it, but then it would ruin the whole theme... Maybe I should make a poll and see what everyone thinks...
