So my parents-in-law are in town. On Monday my father-in-law visited the doctor, complaining of a cough. The doctor perscribed him anasal spray, a red syrup and some pills. He went home and took all 3 before going to bed, thinking they were simple cough remedies.

Oops. It turns out it was Vicodin cough syrup and vicodin pills. The nasal spray, luckily, was harmless. But the other two messed him up big time. He was puking all night and his head was spinning so bad that he thought he was going to die.

Now I have to ask you:

What kind of a doctor perscribes vicodin for a cough?

P.S. He is fine now, but he chucked the medicine in the garbage as soon as he felt better. I told him he should have sold it down at the high school. I don't think he got the joke.

Oh wow... please tell me you have had "a talk" with the doctor about this? Vicodin for cough?

I'm glad he was smart enough not take more of it though. Still... at least confront the doctor and ask him why?

I didn't know they put hydrocodone in cough syrup, but it doesn't surprise me. Codeine has been used in cough syrup for years. Hydrocodone is also a narcotic, but I believe it's stronger than codeine. It helps calm the cough reflex so you don't get those spasms, and the syrup usually also contains an expectorant like OTC cough syrup. But it is grossly irresponsible of the physician not to have explained what it was, and why the tandem of syrup and pill is beyond me. One or the other, I'd say. He's a lucky guy. And the pharmacist didn't say anything either? Chili's absolutely right, but I'd speak to the pharmacy as well. They're supposed to be an additional safeguard. Meanwhile, hope he's feeling better and resting that cough. I wouldn't throw it out, but only take a capful of only the syrup.

Vicodin cough syrup: The worst idea ever? Or is it the BEST idea?

You did not mention whether your father had checked the labels before taking his medicine. Did the doctor leave precise instructions? The majority of medicine issues arise from patients failing to follow the instructions, not an error on the part of the prescriber.

Aw heck, let's blame the doc!

Well, my father-in-law is from Phillipines- though he has been here for about 20 years he is still rather clueless on some things and I'm pretty sure he doesn't know what vicodin is. I read the warning labels when I went over there (he was too dizzy at that point to read them) and all it really said was not to take it with alcohol. Well, it also said not to take it with acetomenaphin.
I'm sure the doctor gave my father-in-law complete instructions and he claimed to understand them. So it's not all the doctor's fault, but it still seems like overkill to give hydrocodone in your cough medicine.
And as for the pharmacist- I know most grocery store pharmacists are pretty friendly and will give you warnings and advice about the medicine they give out, but my father-in-law has to go to Kaiser to pick up his pills and they get handed to you by a counter person, not an actual medical type person.
