That's a new term I just came up with, so let me clarify. Dual-polarity refers to how something can have two opposite extremes attached to the same term (it can be in reference to said word's definition, but sometimes it can just be what the word is attached to).
Here's an example: the word fantasy. It has a variety of meanings, the core of which is "something made up or imagined" (I'm sure Webster has a better definition). Oddly enough, the definition becomes like the epicenter of everything tied to that word, or at least it does in this case. The Dual-polarity for this word is, in my view, how severely extreme the ranges are for the word. On one end, fantasy is a mere child's thing, a story of pure imagination and fancy, which is a rather strong cornerstone in children's literature. Then there's the opposite extreme that exist in the opposite polarity. Not only can the word itself refer to the disturbing thoughts cycling through one's mind (whether it be fantasies of violence or a worse conglamoration of everything terrible and destructive), but such has fantasy as a genre become that it acts to incite such dark thoughts upon one's mind, seeking, through the mind and motives of it's author, to stir up the carnal nature of an individual.
Other words and subjects have this dual-polarity. Furry is one, relating closely to the fantasy example just mentioned almost entirely (those not aware of what a furry is, click here for a Wikipedia article). For the life of me I can't remember any other examples, but I'm sure you get the point.
So what does this have to do with me? Something that I call the dark side of freedom. The freedom of one can shakle and chain another.
For what I match it too, the subject at hand becomes inconsequential and something I'm best leaving alone, yet within me stirs a resentment towards the world for crushing the potential of many things I could've enjoyed; new entertainment genres or story types that could've existed. I'm not alone in feeling this, yet the very nature of the entertainment industry--especially amateur type, but also at the professional level to a degree--has forced me to cease the search for that which I have hoped for, simply due to it being an unorganized, chaotic mess where the voice of the unsavory types overrides that of those who seek to appeal to everyone, or at least hinders those who seek for one but not the other.
I am one of those, seeking that which is good, appeals to everyone (young and old, and everything in between), and is very imaginative. Yet to look for that would not be worth trudging through its polar opposite. How does one cross the murky swamp to reach the tasty, clean fruit on the other side without being marked by the filth of the swamp? It is a conundrum of which the real-life counter-part to has puzzled me for a long, long time.
Dual-polarity of words is merely a shadow of a worse issue at stake: the dual-polarity of society. The entertainment industry has run into this headlong, failing to see middle ground. A system of demographics is setup as a way of determining who to appeal to. While not a bad idea, the flaw of it's outcome exists in how the full-range demographic, known as "family," is largely ignored. It has been proven to be a lucrative demographic, yet only a few tap it, usually with extreme success. But what of those that don't? Why do they pass up the opportunity? The answer becomes surprisingly simple: the internal agenda, the hidden motive. In a manner of speaking, people who lead certain entertainment projects become less inclined to entertain, less inclined to use art and imagination to its fullest, but instead seek to put forth there plan, their ideas, their agenda, all laced with a coat of pyrite, a gilded object whose purpose is to look pretty but present no real value.
A form of appraising exists for the professional media, but what of the amateur media? This is where the quagmire exists. The gold I seek lies in a pile, mixed with that which I despise, yet all boast the same covering.
So how does one shift the gold from the fake?
Anyway, sorry about the semi-cryptic nature of this post. I'm a little annoyed right now. As great a tool as the internet is, it is pathetic when you try to find something you want (or even AT LEAST a database of many possible something's you'd want) while avoiding that which you don't. In short, my hunt of certain genres (generally fantasy related) is hindered by the mere existance of the drivel produced by those whose only purpose in life seems to be to fulfill their own selfish pleasures, no matter how disturbing and unsavory, blighting entire genres where lack of said material would be a bliss to many, myself included.
Edit: If anyone wants me to clarify this post, even to the point of bluntness, feel free to ask. I felt better about writing this in semi-poetic form first.
