GAMES: GameSpot GameFAQs MOVIES: Metacritic Movietome Comic-Con

There are some feats that are more difficult to pull off in the field of video games than any other form of media. While most games nowadays usually consist of shooty bangy kill-fests with some brooding sprinkled on top, there have been games that managed to put on a happy face while still being able to produce an enjoyable experience.

5. Armed and Dangerous (Xbox, PC)

Great, now the land isn't safe!

A little gem from LucasArts that faded away in the memories of most, Armed and Dangerous was a run-and-gun action game with all the explosions, bullets, and tea-sipping robots anyone could ask for. Strange weapons such as the Land Shark Gun (pictured above), the Topsy Turvy Bomb, and the tuba-shaped mortar launcher kept combat interesting in what would have otherwise been a run-of-the-mill shooter. Also, the zippy dialogue delivered by your comrades added a smidgen more of quality comedy (even though they got old fast).

While the one-liners spewed from you and your allies got repetitive over time, the real comedic genius resided in the between-level cutscenes which included various forms of bizarre comedy (and some uncomfortable moments) that will more than likely cause your bowels to empty from all the laughing.

Notable quote:

Soldier (Russian accent): GIVE ME THE KEEYS!

Rexus: What the bloody hell is this man saying...? Give him a kiss?

Soldier: GIVE ME THE KEEYS NOW!

Rexus: Okay, but I...*kisses soldier*

Soldier: AGGH! WHAT THE **** ARE YOU DOING!? GIVE ME THE KEEYS!

Rexus: I'm sorry, I can do better! Its been so long since I kissed a man!

If you want to check out some true comedic genius but either can't find a copy or are a little short on cash, there's a bunch of videos on hosting sites to grant you access to some real comedy gold.

4. Resident Evil: Director's Cut (PS1, Saturn)

oh my gosh there is a zombie trying to eat me oh no help.

Maybe its just me but there's been a question I've had about this game ever since the first day I played it: Where the hell did they find these actors? For those unfamiliar, Resident Evil: Director's Cut is notorious not only for its clunky control scheme but also its F-list acting quality in both dialogue and live action cutscnes. Every single line is delivered in such a hailariously robotic way that I honestly think the developers intentionally casted the worst possible talent to make the game memorable for years to come.

Okay, so there was the parts where you would get some random "BOO!" scares but, all in all, any game that has live action cutscenes with "actors" they may have well (and probably did) pull off the streets negates the jumpy bits.

Notable quote:

Barry: You almost became a Jill Sandwich!

Who the hell references sandwiches to explain another person's near-death experience? Barry, that's who.

3. Conker's Bad Fur Day (N64)

This is the only picture Gamespot would allow me to use

Remember the days when you wer in the 4th grade and you and your buddies were sitting in the grade school cafeteria exchanging poo jokes? Guess what, someone was taking notes because Conker's Bad Fur Day was the epitome of crude (and sometimes downright smutty) video game humor. Everything from giant singing piles of dookie to flowers with...certain assets made Conker's Bad Fur Day the funniest game on the Nintendo 64 and the third funniest of all time.

Notable quote:

Anything the Great Mighty Poo sings

Honestly, just look up some of the cutscenes and you'll have a childish snicker or two.

2. We Heart Katamari (PS2)

Not pictured: Sanity

We Heart Katamari, the sequel to the under-the-radar Katamari Damacy, is a game that manages to be hilarious and disturbing at the same time. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing funnier than rolling a sumo wrestler into food to make him grow into a massive man-moon but there's something disturbing about making him bigger when you also roll up people...Yeah.

In any case, the entire experience is packed with psychadelic goodies that will make any sane man curl up in a corner and suspect that he was drugged in his sleep, which is funny...Err, I think. Come to think of it, this game is more disturbing than funny.

Ah, never mind.

1. Portal (PC, 360, PS3)

"Are you still there?"

Easilty one of the greatest puzzle game in years, Portal delivered ineteresting (and disorienting) gameplay coupled with Cohen Brothers-esque dark humor. The turrets (pictured above) and GLaDOS are some of the most recognizable characters in video games yet, mainly for the turrets' relaxed demeanor and GLaDOS's sarcastic comments throughout the game. On a side note, the ending song in the Portal credits is easily the greatest piece of music to accompany any credits. Ever.

Notable quote:

GLaDOS: Did you know you can donate one or all of your vital organs to the Aperture Science Self Esteem Fund for Girls? It's true!

You can pick up a copy of Portal alone for the PC but I highly reccomed purchasing The Orange Box if you want to get the most bang for your buck...Even if Portal is worth the price of admission alone.

The cake is a lie.

Hey now, those are great picks and all, but any list of funniest games of all time that includes no mention of the MOTHER series is just plain sacrilige!
Posted Jul 23, 2009 6:21 pm PT
I never played it so it doesn't get a spot on my list.
Posted Jul 23, 2009 6:23 pm PT
The Bards Tale is pretty hilarious
Posted Jul 23, 2009 6:30 pm PT
I would have stubbs the zombie in there
Posted Jul 23, 2009 6:35 pm PT
Just so you know you can get Armed and Dangerous on Steam
Posted Jul 23, 2009 6:36 pm PT
I've seen many a list such as this one, but credit goes to you for being the first I've seen to finally mention Armed and Dangerous.

Great read, what game includes tea sipping robots? Armed and Dangerous that's who. Nice choices.

That shark pic is priceless.

those are pretty funny games but you obviously have never played any of the games from the Monkey Island Series. Hands down no competition they are the funniest games. I highly recommend you try out "The Curse of Monkey Island" and "Escape from Monkey Island". The Curse of Monkey Island first though.

Love the Armed and Dangerous props! I still throw it in my X Box just to watch the cutscenes every now and then. That being said, my list has to include Psychonauts for the same Box. Too many great moments to list, but my friends and I still blame things on lying (untruthful) squirrels!

The grand theft auto series? no?
Posted Jul 23, 2009 8:13 pm PT
Where's "No One Lives Forever" ?
Posted Jul 23, 2009 8:24 pm PT
It's no excuse for the bad voice acting, but the reason RE1 had such terrible voice overs is because even the Japanese game used English voice actors: ie, they just grabbed some Gaijin English teachers off the street to provide the voice work.

Sometimes when I feel sad, I play Portal just to pick up the turrets and listen to what they say. It still makes me laugh.

Hats off to you. Best blog I have read in a while.

I found Fallout 3's personal robot butler to be quite hilarious as well:

"A neutron walks into a bar, 'How much for a drink here anyway?' To which the bartender responds, "For you, no charge."

@THE_DRUGGIE: I got so focused on finding the highest rated games I forgot about the ones that make me laugh. That was an entertaining blog. Next thing to do is write about some of the funniest scenes in gaming (or awkward or poorly made...etc).
Even better: why doesn't someone make a list of interesting topics that others could write about...

those games were hilarious and if you know .hack.gu here is a funny scene

Postal 2 had a lot of offensive humor. Curse of Monkey Island is one of the funniest games ever (well, all LucasFilms games were generally hilarious). I don't agree with pretty much all of the list (outside of Conkers) and I definitely get the feeling you were putting Portal at the top of the list just because it expanded into a meme (and because most of today's gamers haven't heard of anything pre-next-gen consoles). To make a claim that "There is no cake." Portal and it's ending song is the funniest game... ever? I don't think you have played too many games. Even Armed & Dangerous, as hilarious as the game is, didn't make me bust out laughing as much as Day of the Tentacle from the early 90s did. A fat guy named Hoagie, the irony in that. Or just the intro to Sam & Max: Hit the Road, that's a lot more hilarious than finding out the cake didn't exist. The cake is nothing more than fad humor. 10 years down the road, no one will care or laugh at the joke. A mad scientist that is obsessed with a girl he went out with only 3 times getting his head ripped of by a psychotic rabbit? People will still laugh at that.

nice list, must say though that the ratchet and clank series is hilarious as well
Posted Jul 23, 2009 10:49 pm PT
Where is duke at???
Posted Jul 23, 2009 11:28 pm PT
Haha, Resident Evil has the worst dialogue ever. I love it. However, the Gamecube remake featured better performances over all, and was was scary as piss. So if you want a true RE experience, play the REmake.

Portal has some clever dialogue that really made me laugh. It's a game that is all around amazing.
Posted Jul 23, 2009 11:38 pm PT
Great list!

Not a bad top five but not the greatest either, but your history with funny games is somewhat deprived. I whole heartedly agree with the MOTHER, Monkey Island, and Sam and Max series' brought up in the comments, and I have a few ideas for you. 1. LUNAR series- If there is something to be joked about, its probably done in these games (however, do not play LUNAR: Dragon Song for the DS)
2. Metal Gear Solid 3- The games goals are twofold: Tell a good story, and to make fun of just about any situation the game presents, whether its making fun of snake for wanting to eat every animal he sees or letting him believe eating certain mushrooms recharges his batteries.
3.DiscWorld series- Classic gaming with some of the greatest humor ever in a game.
4. Foxhunt- A clueless spy tossed into some messed up situations in this kind of a Mel Brooks take on Bond.
5.Homestar Runner- The games really match, what has made the web-toon great.
Try these games out sometime, you will have a blast playing these.

You missed A Bard's Tale... Possibly the funniest game there is... Glad to see you got Conkers on there though
Posted Jul 24, 2009 1:15 am PT
I found the Ratchet and Clank series funny
Posted Jul 24, 2009 1:48 am PT
No One Lives Forever has my vote. The game's humor was dead-on. Early quote from Mission 2 when you're collecting information by talking to informants using codephrases:

Berlin Contact #1: Guten Abend Fraulein, do you make love to strangers? Cate Archer: Certainly not! Berlin Contact #1: Then allow me to introduce myself. Cate Archer: Why not just introduce yourself to a police officer and spare me the trouble? Berlin Contact #1: Who makes up these ghastly code phrases anyway? Cate Archer: Someone in the cryptography department - someone in need of a girlfriend apparently.

great list, but I think No On Lives Forever should be on there, too!
Posted Jul 24, 2009 2:09 am PT
Conker, what fun. The lols were unending with that game.
Posted Jul 24, 2009 2:17 am PT
Sorry, how can be resident evil funny?
Posted Jul 24, 2009 2:25 am PT
Planet Moon's game before Armed and Dangerous .. a super fine game called Giants Citizen Kabuto is a better game and far funnier.
my top 5 would include Giants Citizen kabuto , Sam & Max and Psychonauts.
comedy gold
Posted Jul 24, 2009 2:25 am PT
If you want to laugh try the runaway series
Posted Jul 24, 2009 2:26 am PT

road rash 2
larry sierra
earthworm jim
Posted Jul 24, 2009 3:47 am PT
No, please no Portal. If anything have mercy on the poor souls who play Valve games on public servers and get to hear "The cake is a spy!" ect from a multitude of 13 year olds at random intervals
Posted Jul 24, 2009 4:52 am PT
Good list. The Shark picture was hilarous. I found Battlefield Bad company pretty funny though.
Posted Jul 24, 2009 5:30 am PT
You're Missing a few "The Bards Tale" is a comedic masterpiece also Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 though very serious RPGS there were moments in both games that had comedic flair added that was pure Gold NWN 1 followed in this formula as did Fallout 2

Hey, you left out HK-47 (from KOTOR) from the list. Okay, maybe he was the only really funny character.
Notable qoutes:

Explanation: two per cent probability that the miniature organic is simply looking for trouble and needs to be blasted. That may be wishful thinking on my part, master.

Mercenary: There's something out there... it got the other submersible already.

HK-47: Suggestion: Perhaps we could dismember the organic? It would make it easier for transport to the surface.

Mercenary: Hey! Y-you... you can't rip me to pieces! I'll die!

HK-47: Amendment: I did forget that. Stupid, frail, non-compartmentalized meatbags!

Revan: I don't think "killee" is a word...

HK-47: Exclamation: Damn it, Master! I am an assassination droid, not a dictionary!
Posted Jul 24, 2009 6:24 am PT
A good list, but no BF Bad Company.
Posted Jul 24, 2009 6:31 am PT
Well that's interesting. Iv only heard of the Resident evil series, the Katamari game, and portal. But hey, they must be funny. Right?
Posted Jul 24, 2009 6:48 am PT
The Crash Bandicoot series was fun for me
Posted Jul 24, 2009 6:57 am PT
Gregory Horror Show for the PS2 is quite funny too.
Posted Jul 24, 2009 7:01 am PT
lol yay! portal won!!! lol
Posted Jul 24, 2009 7:07 am PT
OMG! Land shark!
Posted Jul 24, 2009 7:47 am PT
Great list and all deserves to be mentioned. I think that humor is based around opinion however. Though I found Portal to be one of the better games in years, and quite funny, I wouldn't put it in the #1 spot. I would definitely add No One Lives Forever 1&2:

quote:
Inge Wagner: You are a drunk and a coward. Magnus Armstrong: You can say what you please about my hobbies and my hygiene, but I swear if you ever cast aspersions on my manhood again, I'll pound you. I'm not a coward. Inge Wagner: Your threats don't frighten me. Magnus Armstrong: A good beating might knock some of that ugly out of you. Care to find out? Inge Wagner: I will be in my quarters rehearsing, I am not to be disturbed. Magnus Armstrong: That's right. It's the rest of us who'll be disturbed you bloody great banshee. I've heard cats in heat that sing prettier than you.

...and i would add the Rachet and Clank games. Especially Up your Arsenal.

There is a real funny game that flu under the radar for the PS2 called God Hand. It had a bit Japanese humor but it really sold well with the game. From putting evil girls over your lap and spanking them with they get dizzy. To fighting a gorilla wrestler. Also creating over the top super moves. I honestly think that game is one of the funniest I've played in ages. Nice list though.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was one big joke!
